The owners live in a Northern suburb of Philadelphia, and began searching for the perfect property to build a weekend home in 2000, and finally finished construction taking occupancy the day after Thanksgiving in 2004. 'The Fourth Woods' as the cabin property is named, is a page taken from the childhood of the owner. He and his brothers grew up in a farm land area filled with forests and fields, and it was their daily playground. They would venture out and explore through several large tracts of woodland until reaching the 'third woods' as they called it, which was deep, dark, several miles away and as far as anyone would go. Time passed and drivers licenses were obtained, and other interests took over. Fast forward a few decades. Hunting and walking though this 50 acre mountain property reminded him of those days and just how much he enjoyed living and breathing the outdoors. 'The Fourth Woods' seemed appropriate.
Robert Dean Jr. purchased this cabin in 2004
As children, our family went on summer vacations to mountain lake areas such as Pennsylvania's Wallenpaupack, New Yorks Lake George and New Hampshire's Lake Winnipesaukee. Fond memories of camping trips to Tobyhanna and Promised land State Parks, and visiting a friends house on Lake Wallenpaupack. We built our dream vacation home after a two year search for an ideal parcel of land. This one had all of the elements we were looking for; secluded and scenic, huntable woodland with a creek, and close to a large body of water that offered recreation. Not until after we moved in did it become apparent just how perfect our choice was as we kept discovering all that the surrounding small towns had to offer and the area within 30 minutes travel. We began implementing a wildlife habitat improvement program on the property in 2009 and clear cut two 1 acre deer crop fields and a 3 acre sanctuary. We are thinking about building a pond below the house just into the woods and are planning to begin a natural landscape plan for the open area surrounding the house sometime this year.
This log cabin (home) is used frequently by its owners and therefore is furnished and maintained at a much higher standard than a 'rental only' property. The size of the property at '50 acres' of woodland, is a feature almost completely unique that most vacation rental homes simply don't have. The time, effort, and expense put forth in decorating the interior were an endeavor of love and enthusiasm and we think our home reflects that. It is a wonderfully relaxing and quiet setting. You can feel so comfortable and secluded at the cabin yet you are only a short distance from so many things like shopping, dining and many forms of entertainment and of course Lake Wallenpaupack. There are several public boat accesses and beaches around the 15 mile long lake. Best of all when at our cabin, you don't have to be near the sounds and bustle of the big lake 24/7, only when you want to be.
When you read the description of this place, and even previous reviews, you can't help but be a little skeptical. "Really? Is it that good?" Yes. Yes it is. We stayed at the cabin for a weekend with a group of friends this past February. The cabin was spacious, clean, and had great amenities. We took advantage of the hot tub and foosball table and loved the layout--plenty of space in the basement to relax with privacy upstairs. We skied at Montage, about 30-40 minutes away, but not a bad drive at all. And Montage is worth it - great skiing for a good value and less crowds. The best part is the cabin really feels like you're out in the woods, away from the hustle and bustle. Snow was deep, everywhere; stars were bright, air was crisp and cold--a perfect winter getaway. Highly recommended! I should also mention the owner is fantastic with communication--provides plenty of details and quick to respond should you have any questions. This is the type of person you want to deal with on VRBO.
We stayed in this beautiful cabin for a weekend in the Poconos with our friends and had a wonderful time. The house is particularly well maintained, very cozy, and charming as can be. It is the perfect place to relax and spend time with friends and family as it had plenty of room and was very quiet and peaceful. We just loved all of the "mountain house" decor! We took advantage of the hot tub and and the Foosball table and of course took many photos in front of the murals in the den area. Would highly recommend this property!!
We had an excellent time at this property. It was very clean, rustic but with almost all you need for a wonderful stay. We were concerned that the little ones would be wary of all the stuffed animals on the walls, but they enjoyed looking at and even petting them. We put out deer feed and the deer showed up every day, to the children's delight. And everyone enjoyed the hot tub during our cold weekend. The area is very rural, but there are excellent restaurants within a close drive. I recommend this property to anyone looking for a comfortable rustic retreat.
My family had the perfect summer vacation during our stay at the Fourth Woods, log cabin. We experienced everything there was to do and enjoyed every minute of it. There is something for everyone to enjoy. Our family is VERY busy with 2 young teenagers that keep us on the go, this cabin was exactly what my family needed. We had plenty of room with extended family visitors and yet it was still intimate. The bedrooms are spacious with comfortable beds. The layout is perfect with the downstairs room, way bigger than I imagined. Every night we sat by the fire pit and talked about the adventures of the day. There was plenty to do or nothing if you desired. We rented a boat, took the kids tubing, went fishing, hiking, shopping. My daughter hung a hammock in the woods and did her summer reading for HS. We BBQ'd, dined out in local restaurants, and became regulars at the local ice-cream parlor. Town is friendly and a fun place shop in the little stores and tourist shops. The cabin is kept in immaculate condition and well maintained and that is how we left it.
It is easy to see how much the owner loves this cabin when you experience the comfort & decoration for yourself. He was very accommodating and organized throughout the rental process. I highly recommend this rental.
One of the highlights of the trip was seeing a black bear on the property. He seemed very comfortable and quietly disappeared into the woods when he saw that we noticed him.
This cabin is cozy and spotless and it keeps getting better with each visit We can truly say this since this is our 3rd time staying at this property and like previous times it was a pleasure. The kids absolutely love the archery range and watching all the wildlife that visits the surroundings such as deer, turkey, fox and we were lucky enough to have a black bear join us for dinner one night. We will definitely come back, Bob is an amazing person to deal with and will do anything to make you feel at home, Thanks again.
Our extended family rented this cabin for Nov 2013 Thanksgiving. We loved it so much that our family of 6 rented it again for Feb 2014 break. That's right, we rented it twice in the space of 3 months! The owner's insistence on cleanliness and detailed instructions means the cabin is in excellent shape and spotless. The large basement allowed for a cousin "sleep over" and play space without compromising the living space. The property was amazing, with a well marked trail, for hours of hiking a fun. In the fall, we enjoyed tromping in the woods and visiting the creek. In the winter, we spent hours sledding down the driveway. On top of the excellent cabin and property, the town locals are some of the friendly folks we have met. You should rent this cabin!
