The picturesque and lively town of Barga is situated at the base of the Appennine Mountains, 410 meters above sea level, a forty minute drive from Lucca. Barga vecchia (the old town) is a charming network of narrow streets, archways and winding stairways, containing several cafes, restaurants, shops, and a theatre. Barga Giardino (the new town) offers many shops, restaurants, a cinema, public swimming pool, and a Saturday morning market. There is a Sunday antique market in Barga once a month.
Barga in summer is alive with activities. During July and August there are several festivals, including the reknowned BARGA JAZZ and BARGA OPERA festivals. The Piazzetta features 10 days of high quality music played each evening in the old town's piazzas.
Barga grew up around an ancient Lombard castle and its medieval wall is still intact. Barga's crowning glory is the Duomo, from which one can enjoy stunning views over the surrounding rooftops, terraced hills and distant mountains.
