Further details for this vacation house rental in West Sussex, United Kingdom

Fishing: East beach (at the top of the garden steps!) has some popular fishing spots. The experts sit for hours trying to catch the bass, the novices wait until the summer and until the fish are jumping (you will see them from the balcony) and catch some mackerel for the barbecue.

Diving: If you are interested in scuba diving, Selsey has an active aqua club who can give lots of friendly advice. Their website intro says: The Selsey Bill branch is a relatively new branch of the BSAC, formed in 1997 by a group of very experienced divers from the local area. Our most experienced divers can date their diving history back to the early 1970’s; some still even have their twin hose regulators hidden away. As a result we have many years of experience of diving in the local area and further afield.. We play an active part in supporting the local community through various activities and have very good contacts with both the local fishermen and the Selsey lifeboat crew; several having trained as divers with our group.

Golf: The nearest golf course is Chichester Golf Club. The website introduction says: Welcome to West Sussex's Chichester Golf Club for all you need to know about membership, pay and play and society golf on our two 18 hole golf courses, 9 hole short course, driving range and Golf Academy. We have a sister club, Hill Barn Golf Club, in Worthing, a beautiful 18 hole golf course on the South Downs in West Sussex. Ideally situated close to Sussex's beautiful coastline, both Chichester and Hill Barn Golf Clubs' delightful golf courses offer superb golfing facilities to members, visiting golfers, and golf societies alike. Each of our golf courses offer excellent playing conditions year-round, and with 36 holes plus our 9 hole Par 3 golf course, you'll find the ideal golf course facility right here in West Sussex.

Eccentric but delightful beachside cottage

Review Submitted: June 15, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
What a fantastic place!

I booked this for my wife and I for some time away by the sea without children nagging us - and it was a great choice. The place is roomy and warm with a great decking area and garden on the ground floor. The balcony area on the first floor is simply delighful - sitting with the lights off listening to the waves on the pebble beach in front of you, very relaxing. You are not overlooked by the house on the right hand side (and there isn't a house on the left). People walking along the coastal path do peer in jealously and you can't help feeling a bit smug.

All the facilities were in top-notch order, a great shower and a comfortable bed. The kitchen is perhaps a bit low for 2 people over 6 feet but we were eating out anyway. Loads of seating, and even wifi for a sneaky couple of Facebook updates!

The other bedrooms were also well furnished.

The owner was always fast at email responses and helpful.

...and did I say it was right on the beach... excellent!
Owner's Response: Dear BigR, thank you very much for your review. We are delighted that you had a good stay and thank you for taking the time to write a review. We hope very much that you will come back soon.

Thank you again.

I stayed in this magical house for a week at the end of October- it was a total delight. The railways carriages were gorgeous- friends of mine with children visited for the first weekend and we all loved opening the doors to the different compartments to find out where everything was. The facitities were excellent, including freewview and a great music player but mostly I read, wrote, went for beachcombing walks along the coastline and on one night was treated to a musical firework display! The garden provided a more sheltered outdoor experience and the splodgy blackbird popped by to keep an eye on things. Listening to the sea was a great way to fall asleep. I loved the sea food from Julies and also enjoyed fish and chips from the local shop. Enjoyed some local trips but on the whole was content to play house. Thoroughly recommended.
Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your review - it is really appreciated. Glad the blackbird is still there keeping an eye on things! Hope very much that you will come back and stay at The Cormorant again soon.

With best wishes,

Simon

Fantastically relaxing!

Review Submitted: September 11, 2009 Date of Stay: September 2009
We have just returned (reluctantly) from our week at The Cormorant. The house is really quirky and very well stocked with everything that you will need. We had wonderful weather for September and spent a good few hours sunbathing on the beautiful balcony listening to the sea. The only downside for us is that we have a very small dog and even though the garden was enclosed the gaps in the fence were too large and she did escape. Unfortunately, after that she had to stay on a lead. However, she absolutely loved the garden and was worn out every day from the sea air. Perhaps the back/garden could be divided and the gaps in the fence made smaller?

Selsey is a really peaceful place but at the same time we also found so much to do! The locals are all really friendly - coming from London this was something that we weren't used to!

We are already planning our return visit!
Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your review and we are really glad you had good weather. We found there was always more sunshine than we expected from the weather forecast... a kind of micro climate.

I am sorry your dog escaped through the fence. We have a Jack Russell/miniature wire-haired Dachshund cross, quite small and a bit of a Houdini when it comes to escaping from gardens and she doesn't escape through the fence. I didn't think about smaller dogs - so sorry you were not warned. I will add this to the information we send out.

We look forward to seeing you again at The Cormorant.

With best wishes,

Simon

A good place to relax

Jo_2009 Germany & Switzerland
Review Submitted: August 4, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
A nice individual very well equipped place in a good surrounding directly located to the sea side. We had mixed weather with a very strong wind and enjoyed our stay. Longer persons please mind your head at the railway carriage doors. We missed some more explanation how to use the equipment like the Heating / Warm Water System or where to find the promised Barbecue or Garden Chairs. Nevertheless a very good place to relax.
Owner's Response: Dear Jochen,

Thank you very much for your review and I am glad you had a relaxing stay. Please accept my apologies for not getting 'The Cormorant and Local Area' information to you before your stay - this includes information about the heating/hot water system and garden chairs. This should have been sent after we received your final payment.

Regarding the barbecue, we decided that it was too difficult to ensure that the barbecue was properly cleaned in between rentals and it would be easier for people to buy disposable barbecues from the local stores. I have now removed this from the list of facilities.

Anybody over 6' does need to be careful of not to hit their head on the railway carriage doors...having bedrooms/kitchen/bathroom etc inside railway carriages as is very special, but you do need to watch your head if you are tall!

Thank you again for your helpful comments and we hope to see you again next year.

With best regards,

Simon

We've just returned (very reluctantly!) from a fabulous 2 weeks in this uniquely wonderful holiday home.

The Piece de Resistance is without doubt the balcony & it's amazing view. We spent most of our time here gazing out to sea and watching the fishermen and their boats & listening to the diversity of birds on the beach and in the garden.

The fascinating construction of the accommodation was a constant source of wonder and joy.

Obviously a well-loved family home; with all cooking and day-to-day equipment provided to a high standard.

Everything went according to plan and the owner made communication easy and efficient both prior to and during our stay.

Ideal peaceful location from which to unwind and enjoy the gentle, laid-back hospitality of Selsey.

If only we didn't have to leave in order to go back!
Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your review. It is such a pleasure to rent The Cormorant to people who enjoy it as much as we have over the years. Hope to see you again next year and thank you again for taking the time to write a review.

Best wishes, Simon and Jocelyn
