Photos and Description of the Islington vacation apartment rental
2012 Sold Out !! Now booking 2013 !

We're in London's historic Gibson Square, which is an oasis of calm just off of Islington's lively Upper Street, where you'll find literally dozens of upscale bars, restaurants and shops. We're convenient to the major bus and tube lines running quickly to all the sights and tourist attractions you'll want to visit in this great city. The flat is on the Ground and Lower Ground floors of a Regency terraced town house. Travel back in time with us: all sides of the Square, and the park inside it, look just as they did when George III was busy losing the Colonies. This quiet, cozy, comfortable holiday rental flat features high ceilings in the principal rooms, cornice mouldings, and the original butler-buffed wood floors. The furnishings feature elegant Georgian mahogany, polished English silver and brass, and Colefax & Fowler fabrics. The kitchen is very well-equipped for cooking the gourmet treats to be found in the abundant local markets. Children over 12 welcome. Superfast WiFi and Sky TV featuring the Premium Sports and Movies channels.

The Bus: Several key buses stop just three minutes from the house, giving convenient scenic access to all the museums, tourist sights, markets and historic neighbourhoods you'll want to see on your vacation, cheaper and often quicker than the tube. Unlike in most cities, here the bus is your friend, with its dedicated express lanes and incredibly low cost -- just £1.30 with the Oyster Card that you'll get the day you arrive.!

Take the splendid double-decker #4 red bus to Sadlers Wells, St Paul’s Cathedral, the Millennium Bridge to the Tate Modern and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, Fleet Street, Oxford Street shopping, Covent Garden and the West End theatres, and finally Waterloo Bridge across the River Thames to the South Bank (National Theatre, Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, British Film Institute, Hayward Gallery, the London Eye), Imax, Waterloo Station, and the Old Vic. (All that in barely half an hour’s ride!) Other buses from this neighborhood have similarly-stunning itineraries

The Tube and Rail System: It's just a 7-minute walk to the Angel Islington tube station (Northern Line, Zone 1) for quick connections throughout London – just 1 stop to the King's Cross / St Pancras transport hub for further tube connections, the Eurostar to Paris, and mainline trains to Scotland, the North of England, and Gatwick and Luton Airports. And yes, King's Cross does have a brick wall bearing the sign 'Platform 9 3/4'.

It's a 10-minute walk to the Highbury & Islington tube station (Victoria Line) connecting to the Stansted (Airport) Express, and looping through Central London to Victoria Station with connections to all lines. Arsenal's Emirates football stadium is at Highbury, as are National Rail's overground North London and Northern City Lines. Canary Wharf, the Financial District and the 2012 Olympics heritage sites are quickly accessed from here as well.

Heathrow Airport, by the way, is best accessed by the 15-minute Heathrow Express train, which you get from Paddington Station, less than 20 minutes away.

Your Holiday Rental Flat in London: Contact us now to book your London vacation! We're convenient to all the tourist sights, and you can enjoy fine dining, theatres, museums and shopping, while living in a stylish, cozy, classic period flat. Enjoy your London city break out on the town, or take a night off at the BBQ in our pretty garden then hunker down for some uniquely English delights on Sky TV. Check out our great reviews, and for a map highlighting our favourite shops, restaurants, markets and scenic neighbourhood walks, just click on the link to our personal website. Find out why so many celebs, including the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, live right here in Islington!

About Gary Gunas

Recently retired, my partner and I now live our life-long dream of having four sweet homes and living in whichever strikes our fancy at a given time. To cover the bills, all the properties are rented on HomeAway whenever we're not in them. Managing the rentals has turned into quite a pleasant, though very time consuming, new profession for us, wherein we meet (or at least correspond with) the loveliest people from all over the planet. We've had nearly 200 guests in the past three years, and not a single bad experience. Phew! And we have great local staff for each property, so each home is always up to our own high standards for comfort, cleanliness and beauty.

Before retiring in 2005, I spent more than 30 years working on Broadway and in London's West End -- first managing, then producing, big musicals (mostly) plus handfuls of plays and concerts. I was part of the original productions of GODSPELL, DREAMGIRLS, LA CAGE AUX FOLLES, and many dozens more, and producer of The Who's TOMMY and JEKYLL & HYDE, to name a few. Broadway concerts include Bette Midler, Michael Crawford, Frank Sinatra and even a very elderly Josephine Baker (a New Year's Eve concert, at the Palace, of course), whose chateau is just down the road from our house in France.

My partner Bill Rosenfield was for many years what Time Magazine wrote of him: 'RCA Victor's Man about Broadway'. He produced more than 60 Original Cast Recordings -- just pick one up at home if you have one -- if it's from the 1990's or early 2000's, his name is probably on it: CHICAGO, TOMMY, RAGTIME, CABARET, on and on. Billy's now retired from that and actively engaged in his one true passion: writing plays. This new career is just budding, but already showing great progress. He does most of his writing in a cute little shed at the bottom of the garden behind our London flat.

Nearest Train : Kings Cross / St. Pancras (Eurostar) at 1 Miles
Car: not necessary

Ideally situated to explore London for a great city break, Islington itself is a hip, sophisticated destination on the northern edge of Central London, politically and aspirationally resembling Manhattan's upscale Upper West Side. The renowned Almeida Theatre and Kings Head Theatre Pub are just steps away, as are all the main supermarkets, plus endless boutiques and really fine food and antique shops. Stroll or jog along Regents Canal. Easy transport links, fine restaurants, gay friendly. You can even walk to the Eurostar terminal and day trip to Paris in luxury for £59 return !!

Local celebrities include James McAvoy, Lily Allen, Dido and, formerly, Vladimir Lenin, Heath Ledger and Sir Walter Raleigh. Gibson Square alone boasts an Oscar-nominated film composer, a Booker Prize-winning author, a renowned stage director, a nationally known comic and a Member of Parliament. Former neighbour Tony Blair formed New Labour with Gordon Brown in one of the Upper Street restaurants

Other Activities: Theater, theater, theater (or theatre, theatre, theatre!). Antiques, casinos, flea markets, designer clothes, you name it. HEY, it's London !!!

Golf: No golf here in central London, of course, but many of the nation's legendary courses are within an easy day-trip from the many train hubs easily accessible from our flat.

Lots of gourmet cookbooks here, and plenty of novels and guidebooks to read. All downlights, and the sconces and the chandelier, are dimmable to create a calm, elegant setting when you want it. The garden and window boxes are all automatically irrigated, and there's a gas BBQ on the cool York stone terrace outside the kitchen. DISCLAIMERS: As with all houses of this type and period, the rooms aren't huge. Also, a slightly pinched internal staircase makes the house unsuitable for anyone who's troubled by stairs.

July 17/09 to July 24/09 - GREAT PLACE TO STAY

5 of 5

THE FLAT IS BEATIFUL!!!! We couldn't have asked for a nicer or cleaner place. When renting from the internet you just never know what you are getting until you actually get there. We thank Gary for being so honest with his photos and descriptions. There were no bad surprises...just great ones!

We totally enjoyed the area, the closeness of the tube and the great restaurants, shops, bakeries and pubs. Even when we needed groceries it they were just steps away.

When I get a chance to go back to England I contact Gary first about staying at this beautiful property.

Thanks again Gary for a great place to stay and making us feel so welcome and comfortable.

We very much enjoyed our stay here. The rental came with a very detailed manual of how to make yourself at home. The location was quite convenient for our travels and we would surely rent again the next time we are in London. We were not disappointed in our rental and the apartment was very nicely furnished and very functional.

The Perfect Location for a London Break

5 of 5
Submitted: August 22, 2012 Stayed: August 2012
I don't think i will be able do this place justice with words but i will certainly try !

I have 3 women in my life (wife & 2 daughters) with extremely high standards - This apartment was loved by all 3 and ofcourse myself.

The listing was entirely accurate and i would highly recommend a stay here - i would have no hesitation in returning and would like to do so in the future.

The property was clean & highly maintained.

It is in the perfect location - many really good restaurants within walking distance and very good transport links to the many London tourist attractions.

The information provided to help during your stay is second to none.

My one criticism - i didnt stay long enough !

Gary, thank-you for all the hospitality/help

Fantastic Home Away from Home in N1

5 of 5
Submitted: July 19, 2012 Stayed: June 2012
My wife and I have twice stayed in the 'Garden Flat' in Gibson Square and can highly recommend it. It is exceptional value in every respect but particularly when compared to London hotels. It is very conveniently located being a 10 minute walk from - the Angel tube station, buses to the City and the West End/ Harrods/ Chelsea, supermarkets in Islington and plenty of restaurants and pubs on Upper Street. The flat itself wants for nothing being furnished with a good collection of antiques, having two very good sized bedrooms with beautiful linen (and good beds and pillows), a good bathroom and (separate) laundry, TV, wireless internet, the capacity to make free international phone calls (to land lines), BBQ in the rear garden. Both times we have stayed in the Garden Flat is has been spotlessly clean and beautifully presented with an extensive compendium of what is in the flat and how it works. There are two excellent pub/restaurants, The Albion and The Drapers Arms only a 10 minute walk from the flat. If it were available we would stay nowhere else when in London

Gibson Square

5 of 5
Submitted: January 18, 2012 Stayed: December 2011
Gibson Square is a delightful oasis. We stayed there over Christmas 2011, initially having rented it for our family 'overflow' but loved it so much we stayed in it ourselves. Deliciously warm, spotless, elegantly and generously furnished, peaceful beyond belief. It genuinely was as though a close friend had said 'we're popping away for a few days, here's the key, make yourself at home'. There was a fabulous tour from Gary and the most comprehensive book of helpful information I have seen in any property. Every scenario has been anticipated with 'what to do if..' But nothing went wrong. Everything worked beautifully and the comfort, tranquility and peace of this property cannot be overstated. Five minutes from the front door is the buzz of fashionable Islington but you might not want to leave the sofa.... Thank you so much.
