Enjoy an authentic Costa Rican experience! Inhale the tranquility of the oceanside village of Cabuya, just a short drive to the excellent tourist destinations of Montezuma, Mal Pais and Santa Teresa. The property is surrounded by mature tropical gardens. Although it is not a beach house, you can get a glimpse of the ocean thru the dense tropical flora out in the backyard.
The home features two air-conditioned bedrooms, a small bathroom with a large shower, a fully equipped kitchen with a full sized fridge, a small breakfast table in the kitchen and a large dining table on the back garden terrace. The living room has a TV with DVD player. A new larger safe has been upgraded for your convenience. There is a front porch and lovely gardens and a large back terrace with fruit trees and you can see the ocean if you peek over the back fence.
It is right in the village yet offers great privacy and security with a fully fenced in property and a gated driveway for your vehicle.
The ocean is just a short walk, and the local bus line is right at front gate and brings you into Montezuma every 2 hours(and from there to Mal Pais, Santa Teresa, Cobano, the ferry, etc.). There are many beach options all along the road from Montezuma to Cabuya. The beaches in Cabuya are rocky, but just down the road is a wonderful white sand beach (Las Manchas or Playa Los Cedros). It is very bike-able all along the ocean, and if you have a car, it is a five to ten minute drive.
Within a very short walking distance of the house are two grocery markets with fresh produce, meats, toiletries, house supplies and more. There are several local fishermen who sell fresh fish daily in town as well. Cabuya is a great choice if you want to be central yet get away from it all!
We are Canadians who love to travel. I have been to 21 countries and fell in love with Costa Rica so I had to buy a piece of it. Love the culture and the people here. I am a Nurse and will retire early to spend my winters in Cabuya.
Lisa Holler purchased this house in 2012
Cabuya is a great place to wind down and get to know the local way of life. Much less busy than nearby Montezuma and Mal pais, yet with easy access to the beaches and rivers in the area.
The home is in a very safe area with great neighbors, yet surrounded by tropical vegetation so you feel like you are alone.
We had a very good experience at el secret garden and Cabuya. The little house has everything you need and is centrally located in the village, close to grocery stores and restaurants. There is a rocky beach close by and a Sandy beach about 3 K down the road. There is hiking at the Cabo Blanco Reserve 2 K away. There are also rivers and waterfalls within 3 K for cooling off. Cabuya is a quiet, friendly town. Both the property manager and the owner are super friendly and helpful. If you want to stay in an authentic Tico village, and do not require luxury, then el secret garden is for you!
Took a few months to come around and write this but we new from the moment we arrived at El Secret Garden, we were going to have a great time and would have to share it with the rest of the world. I had been in Kuwait for six months prior to coming to Cabuya because I was in the military. I was away from a lot of things, but what I missed most was the love of my life. Instead of traveling home for two weeks, my boyfriend and I decided on a little rendezvous spot in Costa Rica. We knew when we saw this property that our search was over.
One word to start this whole thing off is 'Jenny', the property manager. Jenny was our go-to gal for everything. She set up a hotel for our first night's stay right next to the airport....with breakfast! She then made travel arrangements for us the next day via taxi-boat-taxi to our little home for two weeks. She met us at the door with a smile and invited us to her place for dinner. It was such a smooth transition from place to place. She really took care of everything, leaving us to be carefree on vacation.
We had our first meal at Jenny's restaurant/house. We fell in love with her family and her food. She really cared about us and the experience we were going to have. My boyfriend and I had all these amazing plans on our To-Do list and Jenny had the answer for everything. While we did spend some days just hanging around the house, we also had plans to go fishing, hiking, snorkeling, and even to visit a volcano a few hours away. Jenny rented equipment out to us, set up travel arrangements and even took even time to teach us little words/phrases to help us get around. We learned about currency, culture, wildlife, and food that made Costa Rica unique, and Jenny and her family made that possible.
My boyfriend and I were lucky to be able to reunite in a place like Cabuya. The people are lovely and the area is beautiful. The world grew that much larger in those two weeks, and so did our understanding of each other, but I suppose that is what traveling does for you. To say we had a great time is truly an understatement. We will never forget this little home away from home and our newly adopted family.
I recently spent two very relaxing weeks at El Secret Garden in the quaint village of Cabuya. This adorable little casita was the perfect home base to return to after a day full of adventure. We were very happy to have AC as we were there during the hot season. Having our own washing machine was also a great bonus. The kitchen was well stocked with all the cooking utensils required .Two stores close by sold everything we needed from groceries to cleaning and personal products. There are also a few restaurants with very good local cuisine including a bakery/restaurant with very high quality baked goods. We dîdn't have a car but the bus that takes you into Montezuma will stop for you right in front of the casita. There are also taxi's. The people were very friendly and willing to help. Cabuya is the perfect area for those who love outdoor adventure and those who just want to get away from the fast pace of life. El Secret Garden was the perfect place for us to experience beautiful Costa Rica.
The Secret Garden is located in a small authentic fishing village. It is within walking distance to endless stretches of unspoiled, virtually deserted beaches yet is within 8 kilometers of the active multicultural artsy/tourist town of Montezuma. A stay at the Secret Garden can provide you with some of the best experiences in Costa Rica. It is located in an authentic village in a neighborhood of small rural homes where families live with their children, dogs, cattle, chickens and neighbors in a verdant, peaceful atmosphere where privacy and community coexist in perfect balance. From the garden oasis and comfortable house, you can spend endless days relaxing and exploring the small island just a short walk from home at low tide, the beautiful Lajas River that flows to the beach on the outskirts of town where you can take a break from the ocean and enjoy a refreshing fresh water swim. visiting Cabo Blanco Reserve and it's beautiful trails and interesting wildlife. At midday or day's end, you can dine in small local restaurants serving fresh local fare, a fantastic bakery, coffee and smoothie spot, cook at home with fresh foods from small local stores , dine at the, Coyote Cafe with a varied menu of freshly prepared meals and snacks, or the local Celaje Hotel near their lovely pool and maybe even be invited to go for a dip.
You will go to sleep in a comfortable air conditioned bed dreaming of the amazing people, monkeys, iguanas, pelicans, frigates, magnificent magpies and other beings who you will meet along the way.
An inexpensive bus runs three times a day to Cabo Blanco Reserve or to the town of Montezuma where you can easily connect to other places and arrange for all kinds of outdoor adventures on land and sea, shop, eat, study Spanish or hike the beach or the renowned waterfalls.
Alternatively, you can contact Jenny, the property manager at home in Cabuya who can arrange for tours, travel or adventure with local guides. Jenny can arrange taxis, car rentals, four wheelers, kayaks, snorkeling, horseback riding, surfing, group or private transfers. She is better than any concierge at an all inclusive and a heck of a lot more fun. Even though this is a rural area, many people speak English and there are American, Canadian and European expats living in and around Cabuya.
I have traveled in Costa Rica several times experiencing everything from luxury hotels to hostels.
The Secret Garden the best!
My husband, 3 daughters, and I spent 9 nights at El Secret Garden and were sad to leave our little oasis behind. I absolutely loved the ambiance there!! We were surrounded by lush tropical trees and flowers and even a few awesome tropical spiders! We even had a howler monkey in one of our trees one afternoon! We didn't have a car which was just fine as everywhere we went was within walking distance. Super David was just about a 2 minute walk down the road in one direction and Super Chicho a 4 minute walk down the road the opposide direction. We took the bus into Montezuma several times to play on the beaches, buy souvenirs, and eat at the Sano Banano. They had the best Casado ever! We hiked into Cabo Blanco which was amazing, walked out to Cemetary Island at low tide, played at the beaches in Cabuya, and walked down the road to Rio Lajas and saw about 10 howler monkeys up in a tree above the road. They are so noisy! The casita was very quaint and well stocked with all of our kitchen amenities. It was very nice to have a small washing machine/ spin dryer on the back porch for us to use. As we found out, from staying in another town in Costa Rica, the shower heads are extremely different than ours here in the USA. The water is always cold unless you turn a little valve on the shower head which turns on a little heating element inside the shower head. We were very glad that both bedrooms had air conditioners for us to use at night! We were very happy that we had wireless internet at the house so we could skype call our families back home. Jenny was always available to answer any questions we had although she is one busy girl, riding her bike to and from Cobano every day! I would absolutely recommend staying at El Secret Garden!
Walk to Cabo Blanco Absolute Reserve- National Park, Cabuya's claim to fame which ends at a beautiful secluded beach. Cabuya Island is accessible for hiking and snorkeling by foot at low tide. Hike to waterfalls, visit the dinner movie theater, take a yoga class or a Spanish class or enjoy live music. Available nearby tours: Tortuga Island snorkeling, canopy tours, horseback riding, scuba diving and sportsfishing tours.
A little bar (Salon Higueron) is located at the crossroads and is a friendly little place owned by Jergen (from Germany) that sometimes has live music. You can also visit the Rainsong Wildlife reserve and see their rescued animals. You can rent ATV’s and ocean kayaks at the Howler Monkey Hotel and there are several fishermen that are happy to take you out fishing for the day for a range of prices. El Coyote cafe offers fantastic meals and a variety of activities as well.
If you are looking for a more lively nightlife, Montezuma is only a few miles down the road. A small, but busy little Oceanside town, Montezuma has many restaurants and cafes. Street vendors make the street look lively and colorful with their jewelry, pottery, hammocks and more. The long stretch of beautiful sand beaches in Montezuma are lovely. It attracts many visitors from all over the world.
If you enjoy surfing, you can do it all around the area, but Mal Pais, about four miles away, is one of the favorite surfing destinations in Costa Rica. The beaches there are also lovely. Hike the road from Cabuya to Mal Pais. It is an amazing hike and takes a little under two hours.
