Overview

Mazara del Vallo Villa Rental Photos and Description

4 bedroom, 3 bathroom villa with large pool and huge garden sleeps 8/10.

Santa Rosalia is a family villa in the country with a large pool and garden. A lush Mediterranean garden is offset by a large pool 12 x 6 metres, surrounded by olive trees. You can relax on a sunbed by the pool under a beach umbrella or enjoy the view of the pool and garden from the vine-covered pergola in front of the villa. The main door takes you into a bright and airy sitting room leading into the dining room and then the kitchen. All three rooms look onto the front garden and the pool, while doors open onto a patio behind the house. Upstairs a long corridor accesses 4 double bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. There is a third bathroom downstairs. (An adjacent ground floor study with sofa bed may be rented as an optional fifth bedroom, particularly suitable for older guests.) The house is very spacious and has been recently refurbished to a high standard of comfort.

Close to the villa next door but completely secluded by a high wall and tall cypress trees, it has its own access road.

Mazara and beaches: Mazara, Italy’s major fishing port, has a charming promenade and three piazzas in the historic centre, graced with beautiful baroque churches and civic buildings - even the remains of a Norman castle. Don't miss the beautiful bronze statue of a dancing satyr, a masterpiece of Greek art rescued from the sea by a local fisherman and now housed in a dedicated museum. Away from the main squares is the kasbah, a maze of winding streets and miniscule piazzas dating from the Arab occupation of the island in the 9th and 10th centuries. Recently renovated this area is now dotted with attractive bars and restaurants open in the evening.

Beyond the town there is a long and beautiful coastline with both sandy beaches and rocky coves where the sea is exceptionally limpid. In July and August the beach of Tonnarella offers the facilities of bars with deckchairs and beach umbrellas to rent. Further afield is the famous white sandy beach of San Vito Lo Capo and the nature reserve of Lo Zingaro, which can be reached in just over an hour.

Sightseeing: The ancient Greek city of Selinunte by the sea is a 30 minute drive away. After exploring the ruins, go down to the nearby beach of Marinella, cool off in the sea and feast on delicious local fish at one of the seaside 'trattorie'. Half an hour in the other direction is the mysterious temple of Segesta, high up on a hill overlooking the valley. Nearby is the ancient Greek open air theatre, where performances of plays and concerts are held every summer.

In 20 minutes you can reach Marsala, famous for wine, where top quality wines can be savoured at various prestigious wineries. The Punic Ship salvaged from the sea nearby is on display at the Baglio Anselmi museum. The province of Trapani has been famous for salt production since Roman times and just beyond Marsala is a lagoon where salt is still produced. The picturesque windmills that once serviced the saltpans were built during the Spanish occupation of Sicily.

Take the ferry boat to the fascinating island of Mozia, once a Phoenician colony, with the Punic remains of the walls and city razed to the ground in the 4th century BC. Visit the Whitaker Museum with its star attraction of the Ragazzo di Mozia, a classical Greek marble statue of a young boy, which was found lying in the lagoon.

The medieval hilltop town of Erice, with its Norman castle, site of an ancient temple of Venus, is an hour's drive from Mazara. From Trapani or Marsala you can reach the lovely Egadi islands. Palermo, Sicily's exotic capital, and the Vale of Temples at Agrigento are easy day trips.

Mazara is a Mecca for people who like to eat - not the place to come if you are on a diet! It offers a wide range of excellent trattorias and restaurants, where you can savour the freshest seafood and fish, not to mention the delights of Sicilian traditional fare from fish couscous to melanzane alla parmigiana - aubergines baked with cheese, basil and tomato sauce In the manual you will find in the house, we recommend the very best of local restaurants, all of them dedicated to offering excellent Sicilian cuisine and at very reasonable prices. For families there are many low cost, child-friendly pizzerias on the lovely promenade beyond the city centre. They offer not only pizzas, but a very wide range of pasta, vegetable, meat, seafood and fish dishes. Those of you with a sweet tooth won't resist the pasticcerie - pastry shops - where you can buy mouth-watering delicacies, such as cassata, cannoli or almond pastries. or delicious ice cream. Remember Sicilian ice cream is the best!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you for a lovely week at your villa !We were 2 families from Norway, 4 adults and 4 children aged from 8 to 11. The 4 bedrooms were all very nice, so were the 3 bathrooms. The whole villa was very clean and we loved the double sets of towels. The pool and the pool area were also very nice.

We spent all breakfasts under the pergola and also many dinners, nice to barbeque :-). The yellow book (house manual) with all the info you had provided was great for restaurant tips, beaches, places to go etc. We have spent the last summers in various places in Italy, from Milan and Tuscany in the north to Naples and Capri in south, and this our first visit to Sicily was great.

We would love to come back some time.

Beautiful surroundings very well equipped Villa

  • 5 of 5
9 of us stayed at the Santa Rosalia, comprising of two families with children ranging from 3 through to 16. What a fantastic place, plenty of space, beautiful grounds and the swimming pool was used on a daily basis by children and adults! The villa is spacious, clean and superbly equipped with everything you could possibly need (I went home with clean washing thanks to the washing machine!!). Ideal location should you wish to use it as a base to explore the beautiful island or alternatively just relax by the pool. Nanette and Sylvio were fantastic whilst we were there, meeting us at the villa despite a late flight arrival and arranging for a food shop to keep us going until we could reach a supermarket. Caroline's book is fascinating and the advance tips provided regarding the area, places to eat etc was really useful to help plan the holiday. Cafe Garibaldi is a must visit for food in the town, two lovely Italian ladies with little English but must welcoming and even my limited Italian was sufficient to enjoy a beautiful meal. Highly recommended, we will be back!!

Owner's Response: I am so glad that this family appreciated the accommodation and grounds of Santa Rosalia.
The villa itself is very spacious and in recent years we have dedicated much TLC to the garden.
The fenced pool is now surrounded by lavender and jasmine with the added benefit of mature olive trees providing shade close by.
As we often stay in the villa ourselves, we know what is needed to make it comfortable.
We love to cook so the kitchen is well supplied with a wide range of equipment and we are well organised for small children, as we often have our small grandchildren to stay.
We are very lucky to have my sister-in-law living next door at Santa Maria and she is always extremely helpful with meeting guests, doing a grocery shop and providing any help they may need.

There is huge choice of excellent restaurants in Mazara, but I must admit that the one this guest refers to is a favourite of ours too, not just for the wide range of antipasti on offer but also for the warm welcome we always receive from the mother and daughter team who run it.

We very much look forward to having this family come and stay at Santa Rosalia again.

Spacious family-friendly villa

  • 5 of 5
The property was as described on the website, spacious, comfortable and in a peaceful rural location, but not far from Mazara. It suited the seven of us (three generations) very well. The bedrooms and bathrooms were all of a good size and the downstairs could easily have accommodated a larger party. The kitchen was roomy and well-equipped.
The fenced, salt water pool was a hit with everyone. There were plenty of sunloungers and space around the pool for sunbathing. The surrounding garden with olive and fruit trees was well-maintained and charming. We could look out on to it from the shade of the vine-covered pergola in front of the kitchen window. This is where we ate most of our meals.
My husband and I investigated the nearby towns and sites, while the young family headed for the beaches of Tonnarella, Tre Fontane, Granitola and Marinella. These were busy, but then we had chosen the week which included the national holiday of Ferragosto (many shops etc were closed on this day).
Caroline's house information pack was very helpful and included suggestions for trips and restaurants. I know that Nanette would have given us more help and advice had we needed it. She and Silvio were most welcoming (we arrived very late) and it was reassuring to have them on hand, especially as we managed to lock ourselves out of the house.
I started reading a (house) copy of Caroline's book and found it interesting, giving fascinating details about Sicily in general, as well as about the house and the Manzo family. I have ordered a copy so that I can finish the story.
I would especially recommend Santa Rosalia/Santa Maria to anyone who values a peaceful and spacious location.
PS. Santa Maria olive oil is DELICIOUS!

Owner's Response: We agree that the villa is extremely spacious and can accommodate large parties, even up to 10 if the studio annexe is used. We designed the garden so that the pool is far enough away from the house to provide privacy but close enough to be visible from the dining terrace.
This means that grownups can sip their drinks in peace under the vine-covered pergola while watching the children splash around in the pool.
The fenced swimming pool was installed three years ago and in that time we have created a mature garden with lavender and daisy bushes, jasmine covering the fence and olive trees to provide extra shade.
We are lucky to be in such a strategic position for good beaches and access to the town of Mazara and the motorway to Palermo. My sister-in-law is invaluable with the help she provides to the guests, from welcoming them to doing a grocery shop if necessary and she is always ready to come to the rescue in emergencies. It is not the first time that our guests have locked themselves out of the house!
I think my book does help guests to appreciate Sicilian culture especially if they happen to be staying at Santa Maria next door as much of the story takes place there.
Finally I am thrilled that this family enjoyed our olive oil. 2013 was an excellent harvest and we always pick our olives early in the season to obtain a more intense flavour - a preference for quality over quantity. Once you have tasted Sicilian olive oil you can forget about the oil they produce up north. We may be biased but we know Sicilian olive oil is simply the best!
We are always happy to supply our guests with tins to take back home so that they can relive the flavours of Sicily in a cooler clime.
I'd like to say a big thank you to the guest who wrote this review and I do hope she and her family will return one day.

A little slice of secluded Sicilian heaven.

  • 5 of 5
Villa Santa Rosalia is absolutely beautiful and a perfect holiday retreat to spend with family and friends. I am newly returned from a two week holiday with my family and it was wonderful. I remember from the moment we pulled into the drive way with it's beautiful garden and gazed up at the Villa we all 'oohed' and 'aahed'. The highlights for me were the two swimming pools (yes two...spoilt for choice), dining out under the stars in the orange orchard and breakfast every morning under a canopy of cool, sheltered vines. Bliss. One swimming pool in particular (which is directly opposite Santa Rosalia round the back of the villa) is surrounded by jasmine and lavender. Gorgeous. The air is filled with different aroma's and herbs. As you enter the front door to Santa Rosalia you are immediately welcomed by the warm hit of rosemary. Lemon and orange trees are a plenty here. It was wonderful to pick your own and use it to cook with or serve in many a drink. (Ahem.) Santa Rosalia is large, spacious, clean, beautifully decorated and extremely comfortable. Each bedroom (5 in total with 3 bathrooms) has air conditioning which was greatly appreciated at night time. The supermarket (Eurospar) was approximately a 5/10 minute drive down the road and Nanette kindly showed us the way on our first day so we knew where to go. We had ice cream, every day, twice a day for the whole holiday. Simply delicious! I cannot recommend Santa Rosalia enough to those who would love a peaceful holiday and want the time to read, unwind and eat stunning Sicilian food. If this is what you are after, you are in for a treat.

Owner's Response: I am so glad Lizzy and her family had such a positive response to Santa Rosalia and its garden. As our other villa, Santa Maria next door was empty at the time, we were happy for them to use both pools, but in fact Santa Rosalia has only one pool! This is the one surrounded by jasmine and lavender, and therefore attracting clouds of butterflies.
She is right that the house is spacious and comfortable. The fifth bedroom that she mentions is an adjoining studio that can be rented in addition to the villa itself.
The villa is not only handy for shopping but is only three miles from the beach and the nearest town where there is a wealth of excellent restaurants, bars and ice cream bars to choose from.
Both Santa Rosalia and Sicily were obviously a great success with this family and we are looking forward to them returning next summer

A wonderful place for a holiday for all ages

  • 5 of 5
We are a family of four who live near Chicago and decided on Sicily for our summer holiday, picking up my mother from England en route. We decided on staying one week on the east side of the island, flying into Catania and one week on the west leaving from Trapani. We picked Santa Rosalia because of the photos on the website and the wonderful reviews. Our first week we rented a house through a villa company which paled in comparison to our week in Rosalia. This Villa is a perfect place to have your vacation. It has all that you need, wonderful hosts to help you if you need them and everything you might want a short drive away. I was a little tentative about booking through VRBO but once I started to liase with Caroline I felt 100% confident that it would all be as described and it was.
We had a 13,16 and 84 year old with us and found there was something for everyone both at the villa and nearby area. Mum loved sitting outside painting,my daughter loved the pool and my son the tennis.
We found a fabulous beach about half an hour away (there are closer ones) that suited us all with snorkeling, soft sand, beach umbrellas for Granny and a wonderful restaurant and nice clean toilets for all. Mazara provided us with shops ,restaurants, history and scuba diving.
I felt we had much better value for our week here than we did when renting through an agency who only seemed interested in taking our booking. If it wasn't so far away I would go back regularly as it was such a relaxing, enjoyable week.
My recommendations: Book a meal for the day you arrive,it was wonderful and so nice to have without preparing after traveling, read Caroline's book before you go or whilst you are there, allow lots of time for Selinunte,it is majestic, bring back some ceramics from the shop in Mazara the family recommends (can't remember the name) and if you go to east side of island don't miss Cave Grande if you like hiking and nature!

Owner's Response: It was very gratifying to hear from this family personally as to how much they were enjoying their holiday. We happened to be staying in the villa next door at the time so were able to provide tips and assistance when needed. This was a very enterprising family and in fact they introduced us to a local scuba diving outfit that we didn't know about before! The weather was gorgeous as it usually is in June so they had picked an optimal season for enjoying the beach and the pool.
I agree that a visit to the Greek site of Selinunte is a must for any trip to Sicily. It is the largest Greek site in Europe and magnificent with its temple ruins and stunning views over the sea.
We do hope that this Anglo-American family will come back to visit again.

Completely perfect

This is an incredible place, and a very simpathetic atmosphere, we were surprised at the feeling of space with the garden and olive groves. The house felt a lot bigger than the photographs on the web site. All the recommendations from the owner were spot on, interesting books on the shelves , a beautiful Italian kitchen , everything was very clean . We were 9 people of different ages, we all loved it.

Owner's Response: Thank you Miranda for your appreciation of Santa Rosalia.
We do our best to make the villa as comfortable as possible for our guests. It is certainly very spacious and the grounds provide plenty of space for children to run around and play and adults to find a shady corner to relax in with a book. As the garden was once part of the estate of Santa Maria next door it has many mature trees including Saracen olive trees, Seville orange trees and palms.
Villa Santa Rosalia was originally the annexe of the main villa.
Now converted to a family-friendly holiday rental property, we think it ticks all the boxes for families looking to chill out and explore western Sicily. The villa itself sleeps 8 but there is also an adjoining studio available to rent that can accommodate another couple.
Even larger groups have the option of also renting Villa Santa Maria next door.

I am glad this group enjoyed the books. We are a family of avid readers so the villa is extremely well stocked with books including children's books, that we have collected over the years. As Marcello is a keen cook, the colllection of cookery books is vast and the kitchen exceptionally well equipped for a holiday rental.

Merveilleux séjour à la Villa Santa Rosalia

  • 5 of 5

Owner's Response: I agree with Isabelle that Santa Rosalia is ideal for families with children so with this in mind we have supplied toys for the pool and children's books.
We also supply equipment for babies and toddlers such as cots and high chairs.
The pool is fenced and as Isabelle says, is not very deep even at the deep end.
When guests arrive, the children usually head straight for the pool and I know it can be very hard to drag them out. However at Santa Rosalia, the pool is close to and visible from the villa and the dining terrace so guests can relax under the pergola while keeping an eye on the children in the pool.

Villa Santa Rosalia is in the heart of the country in Western Sicily and the only noise you will hear is birdsong. The landscape is one of vineyards and olive groves, which stretch out as far as the eye can see to gently rolling hills in the distance. However the house is not isolated as Villa Santa Maria is next door and other neighbours are within walking distance. The nearest town, Mazara del Vallo, Italy's most famous fishing port, is only three miles away. The villa is just two miles from a small beach and five miles from the splendid Tonnarella beach. Santa Rosalia is an ideal base for visiting Selinunte, Segesta, Mozia and Erice. Access to the motorway to Palermo and its airport is 5 minutes away while the drive to the airport takes under an hour. Ryanair runs daily direct flights to Trapani (a 40 minute drive away) or Palermo and back, Easyjet flies to Palermo in summer, while Alitalia flies London Palermo and back via Rome or Milan throughout the year.

This is usually empty, but may be used by a caretaker or the owner from time to time. The pergola in front of the house provides seating for 10. Both the kitchen and dining room seat 8. All bedrooms and the kitchen have air conditioning and there is mosquito netting on the bedroom windows. Electric fans are provided for the living areas and the ground floor is heated in wiinter by a wood fired stove. The villa has been redecorated and refurnished recently to a high standard in a mixture of country and ethnic styles. It is family friendly and especially suitable for small children. There is a gate on the stairs and we can provide cots, high chairs, baby bath & baby recliner. The swimming pool is fenced and can be viewed from the house.
