Non-smoking house - you live alone in this house -

We spent 12 good nights in this house in Riol. The house is very good value, well stocked, clean and with good facilities. When we arrived, Beatrix was there to greet us and show us around the house and there was a chilled bottle of local white wine in the fridge! Riol was quite sleepy but had a shop that opened just in the morning and a restaurant (that we didn't get round to trying).
There is a good size secure shed in the nearby garden for storage of cycles, we hired some from a nearby village (Longuich) for 9 Euros a day per bike. We couldn't get helmets so if you are thinking of hiring bikes, it would be worth bringing your own if you have them. The house is quite close to the river and there is a cycle path along the river in both directions. However towards Trier the cycle path soon leaves the river side and is not so nice but still mostly a separate path. Down river the path follows the river more closely and so is a bit nicer.
Very nearby (10 min walk) is a hotel that had a rodelbahn (bit like a cross between a roller coaster and a tobogan run), a cable water skiing/wake boarding lake and a swimming lake with beach and very large inflatables for the kids to play on. The resort is still a work in progress and there was some landscaping going on so was not so pretty but in a few years I expect the trees will have grown and it will look great. All these were quite a reasonable cost.
The Roman remains in Trier are worth a visit and there are some nice towns and villages down the river. Luxembourg city is 40 mins drive away and has good park and ride and is also worth a visit.
The trip from Calais took about 4.5 hours and is mostly motorway with no tolls. Only the last few miles is non motorway. The driving locally was quite relaxed (much less manic than Italy last year!)
Eating out was quite reasonable in various restaurants at about 50 Euros for 4 people. Ice cream cones were very cheap at 80 cents for one scoop of very nice icecream or sorbet.
There is a 'Aldi' like supermarket at nearby Longuich called Norma, which was well stocked and good value and had a good bakery and cafe attached. However two of the supermarkets we tried did not take credit cards, including our Thomas Cook Eurocash Mastercard so we ended up using a lot of cash, but there was a bank near with an ATM.
Overall we can thoroughly recommend this area and this property.
