It is possible to snorkle right from the dock at the house. There are also numerous coral reefs nearby as well as a protected underwater sea park teeming with a range of tropical fish. Not far away is a wildlife reserve for a native species of wild parrots. At certain times of the year, whales can be seen on their migratory routes.
The best way to visit the Bahama Backroads Villa is to hire a boat in Marsh Harbour and make the hour-long trip and dock at the house. Otherwise you can rent a car and drive down. Also, boat rentals are available in the nearby village of Cherokee. Arrangements can be made for both the boat and fuel to be delivered to the house.
For those interested in fishing, the property borders on some of the best bonefishing in the world. The sail fishing in the ocean is also world class.
Great for families, nightlife limited:
There is a small beachfront pub nearby that serves simple fare. Little Harbour itself also features a gallery, museum and foundry where marine sculptures are made by Pete Johnston and crew. The natural harbour offers great anchorage for sailboats.
It should be said that if you are looking for lots of clubbing and vibrant nightlife, this is not the place. However, in Marsh Harbour there are four or five nice restaurants - most of which are open-aired and on the water. There are also several nightclubs in Marsh Harbour and the neighboring island of Hopetown.
For families looking for a safe environment for children there is lots of room and little or no traffic.
Energy conservation:
Because it is secluded and in a unspoilt area, the house is powered primarily by solar energy. However, there is a back up petrol-powered generator. As is the case with most homes in the tropical islands, there is not an unlimited supply of water.
As a result, energy and water conservation are the watchwords. For example, guests need to be aware that lights should be turned off when not in use. Lengthy showers are an unaffordable luxory. You could say the house is a model of energy efficiency in the era of global warming.
Golf:
Opened only two years ago, the Abaco Club at Winding Bay, which features one of the world's first tropical links course, was developed by Peter de Savary, designed by Donald Steel and Tom Mackenzie and is now managed by Ritz-Carlton Hotel Group. It is a magnificent layout along the turquoise waters of the tropical sea.
The Abaco Club course is only two miles from the Bahama Backroads Villa.
Further down the road is the Treasure Cay Golf Club, which is a 6,985 -yard course (from the blue tees) that features 66 strategically placed sand bunkers. A Dick Wilson designed course, it offers a serious challenge.
