The area of the apartment I: If you leave the building of the apartment and walk uphill, you quickly come to 'Tirso de Molina square' (Plaza Tirso de Molina), which has many cafes, and the 'NUEVO APOLLO' theatre, along with a permanent flower market. There is also a children's' play area.
There is a metro station here which quickly connects you with any part of Madrid, although the majority of the places of interest are within walking distance.
Carry on walking uphill and you arrive at (plaza Jacinto Benavente), which is equally full of theatresand cafes in addition to a 'churrería' or 'fritter' shop where you can sample the world famous Madrid fritters served with hot chocolate. Strolling along the shop lined Calle Carretas brings you directly to the Puerta del Sol, which is the geographical centre of both Madrid and Spain itself.
The area of the apartment II: From Jacinto Benavente you can also go left which takes you to the Plaza Mayor (Main Square where it's situated the Tourism Office) or right which takes you to the Santa Ana square, (Plaza Santa Ana) which boasts many cafes and terrace cafes and is famous for its nightlife.
Another option from Tirso de Molina is to cross the square in a westerly direction and head into the typical 'LA LATINA' district. 'LA LATINA' is famous for its numerous restaurants, in particular for 'Cava Baja' street where the famous CASA LUCIO, can be found with its world famous scrambled eggs.
In addition, on Sundays and holidays the district also plays host to the famous RASTRO flea market.
Heading downhill from the building of the apartment takes you into the district of Lavapies. This is a multicultural district full of people of all different nationalities who intermingle with the elderly locals and younger residents who fill up the numerous buildings that are constantly being renovated.
The area of the apartment III: 'Lavapies' is characterised by the multitude of restaurants and 'alternative' venues which can be found here, in addition to the museums and galleries.
The REINA SOFIA museum and the VALLE INCLAN theatre can be found in Lavapiés, as well as ATOCHA station from which it is possible to take various day trips to other cities of interest, such as Toledo to name but one.
