Las Herrerias estate and the Natural Park:
Las Herrerias de Rio Madera is a 1600-acre private working estate hidden deep in one of Western Europe’s finest areas of wilderness, where high mountains and sweeping pine forests surround a spectacular valley.
It is in the Natural Park of the Sierras of Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas. This vast mountainous park covering 214,000 hectares and forming the second largest forested area in Europe, is situated in the north-eastern
Andalucia region of Spain.
Through a careful management programme, the estate ensures the protection of its wonderful natural environment, which is home to a great variety of indigenous wildlife. The wide diversity of species in the Natural Park – some of which are protected - range from the tiny and exquisite ‘viola cazorliense’ (Cazorla violet) to wild boar, eagles, vultures, mountain goats, wild cats and deer.
Activities on and off the estate:
The breathtaking scenery and year-round sunshine make the perfect combination for an unforgettable holiday.
The solar-power-heated pool measures 9x4 metres and has a lockable cover and a neighbouring barbecue area. The pool has large, safe steps leading down for children and elderly people. The large, pergola-shaded terrace of the house overlooks the valley and has gorgeous 360-degree views. There are really not many places like this where you can enjoy being out and about in real wilderness and yet so comfortably accommodated.
On-site activities include animal observation at dawn or dusk from a tree house, bird-watching, nature trails, and many miles of forest and mountain tracks for both walking, trekking and mountain biking. We can offer 4 wheel drive adventure expeditions with drivers, and guided trekking/walking trips. A selection of mountain bikes are available free of charge.
Food, restaurants and hunting:
Organic local produce - the Cortijo is kept well-stocked with basic foodstuffs and domestic supplies. Local products are provided whenever possible, such as the honey from hives kept on the estate which is available during spring and summer, or the locally-produced award-winning olive oil. Good local restaurants can be found, with three in Segura de la Sierra alone.
Hunting is available during the main season from October to February. There is a wide assortment of outdoor pursuits available offered by established local companies within easy driving distance; from fishing and pony-trekking to more high-adrenaline activities such as rafting, kayaking, zip-lining and abseiling. The local aerodrome has a flying school, and also offers paragliding, paramotoring and paratriking.
