Situated in the Hauteur, the highest point of the town of Arles, this charming old house is directly opposite the great Roman Arena and less than one hundred metres from the Antique Theatre. The main shops, restaurants and cafes are less than five minutes walk away. The house is arranged in typical Arles fashion - three floors and a cellar that contains one of the two bathrooms. It is on the south side of a quiet, tree-lined square which contains free parking. To the rear is the completely enclosed, private garden and shaded terrace. Arles contains some of the most famous Roman and medieval sites in the South of France. It is also the place where the Carmargue meets Provence; where France meets Spain and North Africa, even with a touch of Italy thrown in. The culture and the cuisine is a mixture of all these influences. The summer weather is invariably excellent (sometime very hot!) and Arles is a superb centre for exploration of the varied countryside. The great nature reserve of the Camargue, the Alpille mountains, the Mediterranean beaches are all within 30 minutes drive while Nimes, Aix-en-Provence, Marseilles, Avignon and Montpeller can all be reached with an hour.

Additional information about rental rates

  • Prices are for the property per week in euros or pounds sterling for a maximum of 5 persons sharing. (All inclusive of utilities and linen). In some cases at the owner's discretion a €100 deposit will be taken before handover of the keys and re-reimbursed once keys are returned and property checked for breakages and state of cleanliness on departure.

    Keys: Keys are sent and returned via post to you at home. You will be asked to supply both a postal address to send the keys and a date by which you will need to receive them. Keys are not left in the house on departure. A confirmed booking indicates the renter's agreement send the keys back by post.
    Please note that while we will do our very best to find and return personal posessions left in the house by guests after their departure, we cannot accept any statutory responsibility for doing so.
  • Terms:

    30% non-refundable deposit is payable on reservation with the full balance to be paid 6 weeks before arrival.
    Reservations made less than 6 weeks before arrival are payable in full at time of booking.
    Payment are made by bank transfer. Reservations are confirmed only after clearance of funds. We strongly recommend that clients take out cancellation insurance cover. We can advise where necessary.

    Cancellation Arrangements:

    30% Deposit is non-refundable
    For cancellation after 6 weeks before arrival but before 4 weeks of arrival: 70% refund of balance paid.
    For cancellation after 4 before arrival weeks but before 2 weeks of arrival: 40% refund of balance paid.
    For cancellation after 2 weeks before arrival: No Refund unless the property is re-let in which case a refund of 60% of balance paid will be made. Note: If payment in full is not received within 2 weeks of proposed arrival, we reserve the right to relet the property with no refund of deposit.
  • Booking periods and Discounts

    The house is rented by the week with the changeover day being Saturdays. Shorter period are available, subject to availability, and can be negotiated separately. Discounts are sometimes available, also by negotiation, for clients wishing to stay longer than three weeks.

Arles is a magical place, combining many great historical monuments from many different eras with the vibrant life of the farmers and gypsies of the Camargue. Van Gogh, intoxicated by the colours and aromas of Provence, painted many of his greatest pictures here, as did Gauguin. They both lived in the town for a short time.

Apart from the great Roman monuments in Arles itself, Nimes, some thirty kilometers to the north can offer another Arena and the beautiful Maison Carré while just a little further north still is the world famous aqueduct at Pont du Gard.

Arles is an ideal place to base a holiday. If you ever feel that you have exhausted the endless possibilities of the town and its environs, Nice, Avignon, Aix en Provence, Montpellier and Marseilles all lie with an hour's drive.

Pleasant stay in Arles

We were travelling from Australia and always wanted to have a look at Provence, rather than drive quickly through. Being a fan of Roman history and Van Gogh, where better to stay than Arles. My wife and I were accompanied by our 14 year old son, and all of us loved the place. Some eccentric lighting (very Provencal), but overall a wonderful place to enjoy this scruffy, but characterful town.

I so enjoyed my week at 8, Place la Major. It has everything needed for a comfortable and uncomplicated life while not in your own home. Anthony Coles was unfailingly helpful and supportive, leaving comprehensive instructions about the house and everything of importance for a happy and constructive stay in Arles. The house was well maintained and prepared for our visit. Just spending time in the heart of Roman Arles, taking a nightly stroll around the hauteur, long leisurely lunches in the recommended restaurants and eating supper in the charming, vine-covered patio, renewed frayed energies and set me up for the winter. I will return!

A wonderful stay in Arles

I highly recommend this holiday home in Arles. The house is everything the web site states and has the feel of a home away from home. Full facilities and a magical terrace garden enhance the stay. The house is in a fantastic position with everything literally 'around the corner' so a car is not necessary. The neighbours and locals are friendly. Anthony provides excellent customer service and goes out of his way to help with any questions pre trip. His recommendations, particularly the local bread shop and wine merchant are worth following. To sum up - a great location, a terrific house and excellent customer service made for a wonderful week in Arles.

We had a wonderful time at this charming residence. We found that for three women there was plenty of room to stretch out. We enjoyed having breakfast on the back terrace under the mature grapevines. Arles is a wonderful little town which made a great home base for exploring other cities in Provence. The Roman ruins right across the street made you feel like you were in another time. We would definitely recommend this property and would stay there again if we are so luck to return to Provence.

We highly recommend this Arles house as your home base in the Provence area. Easily accessible by car or public transportation.to many points of interest. Mr. Anthony Coles was a pleasure to work with...very thoughtful and detailed!!! And it showed in his home. From towels, dishes, to even a washing machine, you have everything you'll need for a relaxing stay. The neighborhood is very quaint and charming with many picturesque backdrops for you photography enthusiasts. Restaurants and supermarket are just a short walk from house. Market Day in Arles is a MUST see! Another major plus was the FREE parking lot across from the house for our rental car. All in all, a GREAT stay at this fairly priced rental house. Happy Trails!!!
