HOUSE AND PRIVATE GARDEN 50 METRES FROM ROMAN ARENA IN ARLES

Arles House Rental Photos and Description

Two bedrooms (sleeps 4) two Bathrooms and Garden opposite Roman Arena in Arles

Situated in the Hauteur, the highest point of the town of Arles, this charming old house is directly opposite the great Roman Arena and less than one hundred metres from the Antique Theatre. The main shops, restaurants and cafes are less than five minutes walk away. It is on the south side of a quiet, tree-lined square which contains free parking.

The house is arranged in typical Arles fashion - a terraced house of three floors and a cellar that contains one of the two bathrooms. It is on the south side of a quiet, tree-lined square which contains free parking. The rear is a completely enclosed, private garden with a shaded by vines and jasmine plants, gets the sun virtually all day. It contains an olive tree, orange and lemon trees, camellia and oleander bushes. The garden forms part of a group of gardens in an enclosed courtyard and is not overlooked.

Arles is a magical place, combining many great historical monuments from many different eras with the vibrant life of the farmers and gypsies of the Camargue. Van Gogh, intoxicated by the colours and aromas of Provence, painted many of his greatest pictures here, as did Gauguin. They both lived in the town for a short time.

Apart from the great Roman monuments in Arles itself, Nimes, some thirty kilometers to the north can offer another Arena and the beautiful Maison Carré while just a little further north still is the world famous aqueduct at Pont du Gard.

Arles is an ideal place to base a holiday. If you ever feel that you have exhausted the endless possibilities of the town and its environs, Nice, Avignon, Aix en Provence, Montpellier and Marseilles all lie with an hour's drive.

Lovely retreat in Arles

This lovely house is perfectly situated in Arles. It is a 10 minute walk from the train station (no need for a taxi), adjacent to the amphitheater and arena, but on a quiet street. Easy to rent a car from two places that are nearby which we did for day trips after taking the TGV there from Paris (recommend reserving in advance - we didn't and very were lucky to get the last car one day). The house has a bedroom with a double bed on the third floor and 2 bedrooms, one with a double and one with a single bed, on the second. There are 2 bathrooms - one on the second floor and one in the basement. So there is both room and privacy for multiple travelers. The common space (combined kitchen/dining room/living room) on the first floor is very comfortable - not huge but we had 6 adults and one baby using it (one couple was staying elsewhere at night - around the corner at Le Calendal which is lovely) and never felt cramped. The kitchen is well-equipped. And the very best part is the secluded and shaded garden in the back - the shade coming from a canopy of grape vines that was laden with grapes when we were there. Not good for eating - very very tart though our 2 year granddaughter thought there were terrific!!!!!!!! - but provided both shade and atmosphere. We spent most of our "down" time in the garden - eating, talking, playing cards, drinking French wine. The owner provides a wonderful little book (which he wrote) that gives you the inside story of Arles - it was very useful. The house is not air conditioned but there are fans in the bedrooms. We were there at the end of July and were never uncomfortable - the inside stays cool and, as noted, the garden has shade. Very nice to have a washing machine. Hope to get back there someday - maybe in the fall next time.

We did not want to leave.

We spent 12 days in this house and only left because we had to meet our children in Paris. The location is excellent, the patio is a magnet that draws you outside even when the weather is not perfect. The sitting area/dining and kitchen is very comfortable and centered on the fireplace. We were glad to have some chilly/rainy days so that we could start a fire.
The bathroom in the celler is not ideal, but certainly was not a problem for us. The cooking facilities took some getting used to , but by the end of our stay we were producing meals for the three of us very nicely. I would encourage anyone staying here to do the same, especially in the off season. Many restaurants are not open during the week and they are pricey. Buy from the market and cook at home.

The 'inconveniences' that some reviewers have noted are quite minor and in fact ended up being what we enjoyed the most. If I wanted accomodations just like at home .. I would stay at home!
Anthony is a wonderful host and was always available by email if we had a question.
Also worth noting is the excellent and consistent wireless access. This was crucial for us, as this was a working vacation and we needed to be accessible to our clients while we were away.
Our last five days in France were spent in Paris, and the whole time we wished we were back in this house in Arles. I wholly recommend it to anyone who wants to feel (for just a little while) like they are living in this wonderful town, not just visiting it.

A Week Wintering in Arles

My husband, daughter and I spent a week in Arles from 2 January 2011. We adored the town, the history and the wonderful old house we stayed in. We had plenty of room and were very comfortable (although the bed in the double room next to the bathroom was pretty uncomfortable...). It was a joy to come home each night to our cosy home where we even managed to cook a meal (after a visit to the fantastic Monoprix nearby). Well situated, well furnished and well priced! Yes it was cold but, it was winter with the best part being, very few tourists. Thanks to Anthony for all his help - a great asset.

Warmth found in cold Arles

House very well located and delightfully quirky. The property was very clean and everything was well described in the owner's notes. We quickly learnt how to use the fireplace as it was freezing in Arles in Dec. House became quite warm and cozy. Had everything that was needed - clothes washing, kitchen facilities, warmth, music and Internet. Owner very accommodating and good to deal with. While others have commented on the unusual bathroom arrangement, guests should just make it work for them.

Arles contains some of the most famous Roman and medieval sites in the South of France. It is also the place where the Carmargue meets Provence; where France meets Spain and North Africa, even with a touch of Italy thrown in. The culture and the cuisine is a mixture of all these influences. The summer weather is invariably excellent (sometime very hot!) and Arles is a superb centre for exploration of the varied countryside. The great nature reserve of the Camargue, the Alpille mountains, the Mediterranean beaches are all within 30 minutes drive while Nimes, Aix-en-Provence, Marseilles, Avignon and Montpeller can all be reached with an hour.

Other Activities: Most sports like tennis and swimming are available in the town. There are many riding stables within easy reach for beginners and experts
