A beautifully reconstructed tower, “Torre dei Cavalieri”, in the heart of Birgu (named Vittoriosa after the victory over the Turks in 1565) overlooking the most elegant harbour in Malta (Grand Harbour Marina) with stunning views over the waterfront and adjacent to the oldest and most historical buildings (St. Lawrence – the Knights’ original Cathedral; The Inquisitors’ Palace, the Auberges of Provence, Auvergne, Italy, England, etc.). This is one of the most prestigious locations of the whole island, right next door to the Casino di Venezia, with its excellent restaurant. There are several wine-bars and a water-taxi service which operates all day including evenings to Valletta. The area is the oldest of Malta, dating back to before 1565 (when Sultan Soleiman the Great and his admiral Dragut attempted in vain to invade) and was defended by the forts of St. Angelo – thereafter the site of the British Royal Navy for many years and now that of the Order of St. John and St. Elmo.

Among places of interest to visit in Valletta are the co-Cathedral (with the only signed painting by Caravaggio) and the Knights’ Palace, with a very fine collection of firearms and Gobelin tapestries, gifts of the Grand Masters. The old ”Silent City” of Mdina is a must, with its wonderful cathedral and unforgettable architecture. There are many restaurants and bars well worth stopping at, in particular the Xara Palace (“Relais des Chateaux”) which has a very good outside “trattoria”.

  • The tower is made of the typical honey-coloured sandstone (globigerina) and comprises two wings, one sleeping 6 and the other 4/5. The larger one has a very spacious kitchen (and separate WC) with those wonderful sea views. The lift takes you to the three bedrooms: the main double bedroom (queen size bed) has its own bathroom (tub), the other two twin-bedded rooms share a shower & WC. The lift then takes you to the very ample and stunning drawing-room with terrace and picture window over St. Lawrence’s church and waterfront. The smaller wing has its kitchen on the ground floor, with steps leading up to the very tastefully decorated dining/living area (sofa bed) with two twin-bedded rooms and bathroom with tub. This wing also has its own smaller terrace overlooking the harbour. Both wings have air conditioning, washing machines and well-equipped kitchens. All single beds can be turned into doubles.

Wonderful place, terrific vacation!

We - a German family of 6 - stayed at Torre 2 weeks in July and August 2009 and LOVED IT! The house is spacious, perfectly kept, clean, totally functional and very, very comfortable, so granting a very smooth stay, no problems whatsoever. Its position makes reaching Valletta, St George and many other places in the island very easy. Together with a breathtaking view from the terrace, all the historical buildings surrounding make you feel like you are back in time, one of the Maltese knights. The staff is very helpful and professional, always eager to help with suggestions, hints etc.. We particularly appreciated the airport pickup service and the owner's kindness. Two thumbs up for this rental! (Helmut from Hamburg)

La Torre delle Meraviglie!!

Ottima accoglienza (essendo arrivati la sera tardi abbiamo trovato in frigo il necessario per la prima colazione del giorno dopo), tutto il gruppo (8 persone) è rimasto incantato dalla splendida cornice che offriva la torre in ogni sua stanza.
Le foto non rendono a pieno il fascino medievale che si respira tra gli arazzi e la pietra dei muri. Bella la vista dalla terrazza direttamente sulla darsena.
Vicinanza della fermata degli autobus che agevola gli spostamenti (anche se con una barchetta ci si metterebbe 5 minuti a raggiungere Valletta invece di mezzora di pullman). Appartamento completo di servizi domestici, compreso lavatrice e ferro da striro (manca solo la lavastoviglie per i più esigenti), biancheria e stanze pulite, presenza di ascensore nell'appartamento più ampio. Suggerimento per i futuri ospiti: unico vero supermercato nella zona si trova a Paola (nei pressi dell'Ipogeo). Vicino alla Torre due piccoli negozietti (aperti solo la mattina) per i viveri di prima necessità.
A Malta non esiste una card per sconti o entrate cumulative per musei o siti archeologici. Gli ingressi variano da 6 a 9 euro circa (20 per l'ipogeo ma li vale). Sconsiglio ai non appassionati del genere i templi megalitici. Simpatico il Popeye Village, portatevi il costume se bel tempo! Unici nei, gli orari dei bus (a volte passano a distanza di un'ora l'uno dall'altro senza riferimento alle fermate) e orari dei musei poco estesi (chiudono verso le 16, se non solo al mattino).
Voto complessivo della permanenza 8 (della Torre 10)!!

Owner's Response: ENGLISH TRANSLATION - Excellent reception (having arrived late at night, we found in the fridge what was needed for breakfast the next day), the entire group (8 persons) was charmed by the splendid ambience of every room of the tower. The photographs do not do full justice to the medieval fascination offered by the tapestries and the stone of the walls. The view from the terrace directly on the marina is outstanding.
The nearby bus-stop makes displacements easy (even though Valletta could be reached in 5 mins.by boat, instead of half-an-hour by bus). The apartment is equipped with washing machine and iron (though someone might want a dishwasher), rooms&linen were clean; lift in the larger apartment. Suggestion for future guests: the only real supermarket is at Paola (near the Hypogeum). Near the Tower 2 small shops (open mornings only) for essentials.
Malta does not offer a card for discounts or cumulative entries to museums & archaelogical sites. Tickets cost from 6 to 9 Euros (20 for the Hypogeum, but well worth it). The megalithic temples are not recommended except for specialists. Popeye Village is pleasant, bring a bathing-suit if the weather is fine. Only draw-back the bus time-tables (sometimes they pass at intervals of one hour) and limited museum opening times (they close at 4 pm, some only mornings).
Overall rating for our stay 8 (10 for the Tower) !!

Poorly Represeted

We were very dissappointed with our stay at this location. The refurbishing of the unit is still in need of detail. The plumbing was out for three days during our stay and the owner is unwilling to make good on the problem.
Owner's Response: We are sorry for this guest's dissatisfaction, however, the property (without any doubt one of the classiest, most comfortable mansions on the island of Malta) was under a different management at the time of the guest's stay (2008). Since then quite a few improvements have been carried on, including a new professional staff thoroughly checking the property before each new guest's arrival, providing assistance and hints 24 hours/day, and much more. As the new management we can now grant total quality and satisfaction. Please read the other reviews in this page to make sure.
We also contacted the owner re: this case and got this reply: "The party of eight guests rented the property from 21 through 28 October 2008 (not November), but what is relevant is the statement 'The refurbishing of the unit is still in need of detail', which is not only incomprehensible, but conflicts with the appreciation the guests expressed to the caretaker. There was a partial lack of hot water over the weekend 25-26 October (though hot water was available in one of the bathrooms) and this was remedied on 28 October - by which time the guests had departed".
Once again, we can now 100% certify the perfect conditions of this beautiful, extremely comfortable property and look forward to many new happy renters soon.

We had a great vacation here

We are from France and spent 10 days here. The property was clean and well kept, very elegant, much better than in the photos and we got everything we expected, exactly like tehy say in the advert, or more. The view over the harbour is fantastic. Everything was near, shops of all types and great little restaurants. This place is totally different from the others, unique. We recommend it and will surely come back.

Beautiful, scenic, terrific location

Hallo - We stayed 1 week at this gorgeous house and were totally happy with it. The caretaker is a nice guy who helped us in many ways, the house was very clean and comfortable and got everything we needed for a great stay. The location is perfect even if you don't have a car and the view from the windows and the terraces is terrific! All the previous contacts with the owner were excellent too and we had no problem all throughout the booking stage and the actual stay. We 100% recommend this place, which is unique and a great value for your money.
