Having lived in France and studied French my whole life, it seemed to be my destiny to live, at least part time, in France. I spend part of the spring and fall in Trôo and the rest of the time in San Francisco, California.

Kate Kilbourne purchased this cottage in 2000

I simply became enchanted by Trôo whilst on a romantic vacation with my boyfriend in 2000. It was a combination of the charm of the cave village, the sheer beauty of the views from the property, and the amazing local food and wine. It's been over ten years since, and the enchantment has not yet worn off!

I come every spring and autumn, and there is never a dull moment. Farmers markets, brocantes (village swap meets), chateaux to explore, wine to taste, really, I feel like the best that France has to offer is right here in the Vallée du Loir. But with my incredible views spanning over the valley, I am happy to just stay at home, reading in the hammock or sipping wine with friends on the terrace.

A LOVELY HOMELY COTTAGE WITH SPECTACULAR VIEWS

  • 4 of 5
The cottage has spectacular views over the valley, and we had a wonderful time. Local markets, two chateaux at Le Lude and Courtanvaux were great to visit and very close. This area is off the tourist track, and all the better for it. We were lucky to meet the owner of the cottage a very warm and friendly lady. When time allows she stays there herself therefore the house has a personal cared for atmosphere. It was clean and well equipped. We were well informed about markets, shops, cafes and a local Art Exhibition. The garden was delightful with herbs for our use. The caretaker Alain was friendly and helpful and looked after us very well ..We were there for eight days and would be very happy to return. We'd thoroughly recommend it to others, as long as you can manage the distance to carry things from the car (at around 70 years each, it was no problem for us!)

Owner's Response: One of the characteristics that make this a special place is that there are no roads in front of the cave houses, only winding footpaths and stairways carved into the hillside. The silence and verdant views, without a car in site, more than make up for the 5 minute walk up a lovely footpath to your car. Not advised for anyone who has trouble walking.

CHARMING LOCATION IN BEAUTIFUL LOIRE VALLEY

  • 5 of 5
What a beautiful gite. The house is set in a beautiful garden and overlooks the Loir river from high atop a cliff filled with caves. It's a perfect place to get away. The house is very well finished and equipped and the furnishings are all great. We really enjoyed the outdoor dining area overlooking the valley. Definitely recommended.

CAVE YUCCA, TROO, FRANCE

  • 5 of 5
Had a wonderful stay the last week in April. The lilacs and roses were blooming everywhere. The view over the valley from the terrace is formidable! The birds sang from morning to night and it was light from about 6 AM to 9 PM. In spite of the rain we visited a chateau or place of interest each day. You should be hearty to climb up and down the rocky hills.

LOVELY WEEKEND IN A LOVELY COTTAGE!

  • 5 of 5
The cottage fits its description: it IS charming. From the lovely furniture, fireplace, kitchenware, books, pretty and cosy and rooms, to the green and flowery surroundings (we were lucky, spring came early this year) and the view from the terrace. The village, with its network of caves, layered cave-houses and maze of stairways, is really worth visiting. We loved the dinner we had in the Hotel du Cheval Blanc (a gourmet resturant in the village), and also enjoyed local wines : ) Our only regret is that it was all too short - a weekend just gives a taste of the beauty of the place, and we really hope to come back for a week or more during summer.

Owner's Response: Merci Ioana, I hope you do have the chance to return -- the views from the cottage change so dramatically from season to season -- and in the summer it stays light until almost 10:30 pm!!! Long dinners on the terrace in the warm summer dusk are my favorite, but you are right, the food at the Cheval Blanc is amazing!

A COMFY SPOT IN THE FRENCH COUNTRYSIDE

  • 5 of 5
If you're looking for a secluded getaway in the middle of France, this is it. The tiny village of Troo is surrounded by farms and overlooks the Loire valley. It's very quiet and beautiful. The cottage is quite nice. It's two rooms stacked on top of each other connected by a spiral staircase. The upper floor has a couple of couches, a table, and the kitchen. By European standards, this kitchen is quite large. The door opens onto a wonderful terrace. The lower floor has a bedroom and the bathroom.

The property owner, Kate, was extremely helpful and communicative. We had absolutely no problems at all during our stay, and we'd recommend it highly.

The one word of caution is that since it's off the beaten path, you'll have to drive a bit farther to see the popular chateaus of the Loire. Of course, there are so many things to see in this region, you'll easily find lots to enjoy. It was a unique experience to stay in one of these "troglodyte" homes. It's not really a cave, it's just built on the hillside. The property description is accurate that you need to park a couple of blocks away up a steep path. That's sort of nice in that there are no cars nearby.

In summary, this was an awesome cottage.

Owner's Response: According to the shortest route via Google Maps, here are the travel times, in hours and minutes, from Trôo to a selection of the most famous Loire Valley chateaux:

Amboise 53 min
Chaumont: 1:03
Chenonceau 1:07
Cheverny 1:10
Chambord 1:13
Villandry 1:14

The local chateaux along Le Loir are exceptional and well-worth visiting too. I prefer these chateaux to the larger ones to the south. There is less tourism, for one, and to me they feel more intimate, constructed on a more human scale. These are the lesser known gems of the region:

Lavardin 14 min
Poncé-sur-le-Loir 14 min
Courtanveaux 19 min
Le Grand-Lucé 39 min
Le Lude 1:01

CAVE YUCCAS ROCKS!

  • 5 of 5
Cave Yuccas is awesome, and Troo is a hidden gem. The whole place seems almost magical – a super stylish house with an enormous view of the Loire valley and modern accommodations inside atop a troglodyte-living museum whose caves were carved possibly more than a thousand years ago? Yep. Villagers living perched on a hillside, tourists few and far between, medieval frescoes in the church walking distance across the lazy river? You betcha. Farmers’ markets, yellow fields of mustard, vineyards and shopping within 5 minutes drive? Check. And all this so close to Paris and a nearby TGV stop. Unbelievable. We stayed a week in April and it was perfect. Allan (the caretaker) was super helpful, the garden was wonderful to hang out in, the kitchen well-appointed, all the furniture comfy – everything you need! We love this place.

La Cave Yuccas is an exceptional vacation rental in the Loire Valley, France. Located in the troglodyte village of Trôo, the property features a unique cave house and heritage museum with a beautifully restored cottage above the cave. Perched high up on the hillside with full southern exposure, the Cave Yuccas property offers stunning views over the village, river and valley. The origins of the ancient town of Trôo are lost in antiquity, but traces of its importance as a medieval 'city' can be seen today in the heights of the village where remains are visible -- a surrounding fortified wall, dominated by a feudal mound and a splendid roman collegiate church. The hillside, covered with greenery, reaches a height of 129 meters and was carved from rock in various layers, in which caves were dug to form many picturesque habitations. Discover this extraordinary river valley of ancient churches, castles and caves, and relish the delights of the farmers markets, restaurants, and vineyards.

Other Activities: Discover local farmers markets, chateaux, and vineyards, and explore this ancient troglodyte village along the Loir river by foot or bicycle

Notes:
One of the great things about this property is that it is built into the side of a hill, overlooking the river and valley, with no road in front of the house. As there is no car access to the Cave Yuccas, you must be fit enough to walk on foot paths and climb stairs with your luggage, groceries from the market, bottles of wine, etc. The property is terraced with internal and external stairs on three stories, so small children should be supervised.
