About Brent

Hello and welcome to our casita. We are both from New Mexico and tremendously enjoy the time we are able to spend in the “land of enchantment.” After graduating from New Mexico State University our careers have us taken around the United States. Although not living in New Mexico for many years, we have always returned to revitalize ourselves and enjoy the food. We especially enjoy the northern New Mexico landscapes and the events in many of the communities between Santa Fe and Taos. We enjoy the outdoors, taking many picnics and hikes in the mountains and along the Rio Grande and we also enjoy the shopping and architecture of Santa Fe. However, relaxing and enjoying a sunset at the casita is always the highlight of the every trip.

Brent purchased this house in 2007
Why Brent chose Medanales

We were looking for a retreat in northern New Mexico where we could relax and enjoy Santa Fe and Taos. Once we experienced the expansive views, southwestern architectural features and the amenities of the Rancho de San Juan County Inn, we knew the casita would suit all of our needs – relaxing and entertaining friends.

There were many features that attracted us to the property. There are wonderful views of the Ojo Caliente Valley from the living room and back patio. The front of the casita offers a portal that is refreshingly shady in the afternoon with views of Black Mesa. In the main section of the casita, the master bedroom opens into the living room allowing for a view of the fireplace. There is also an additional master bedroom with a fireplace and private patio. The casita is part of a small enclave of homes within a gated community that adjoins Rancho de San Juan Country Inn and Restaurant (currently closed).

What makes this house unique

The casita is furnished to reflect our interest in traditional arts and crafts of New Mexico. It offers solitude while providing easy access to the landscapes and cultures of Northern New Mexico - both Abiquiu and Ojo Caliente are close by and there are scenic loop drives to Taos and Santa Fe that provide perfect day trips. Other unique benefits include: walking distance to Rancho de San Juan County Inn and Restaurant where you can make reservation for breakfast or dinner (we have arranged for the Inn to provide you with keys to the casita and a gate opener); access to a unique limestone carved cathedral behind the Inn on the black mesa – a short, easy hike from the casita; a credit at the Inn that can be used towards dining or gifts; and an opportunity get away for everything and relax!

The casita includes two kiva fireplaces, one in the living area and one in the master bedroom for cool spring and fall evenings; a full kitchen with a Viking stove for those inclined to create meals, a beautiful covered patio area with an outdoor fireplace, peaceful fountain, and teak furniture as well as two back patio sitting areas to enjoy the amazing southwestern sunsets.

Wonderful Retreat

We stayed at this casita for two nights and we had an exceptionally great time. The property is located just south of the Ojo Caliente hot springs but by far the best attribute of the house is its location. The property is removed from the main highway and is a great launching point for hikes. As we discovered, there are a number of scenic treasures hidden in the nearby hills. El Rancho de San Juan is one of the best kept secrets of Northern New Mexico!

Owner's Response: Thank you for the great review. We enjoy hiking from the house with a goal of reaching the top of Black Mesa. There is always something new to see and the views from the top are tremendous. There are also many hikes within a short drive - Ghost Ranch and Santa Fe National Forest have several trails nearby.

In addition to hiking, there are some great drives where you can enjoy the landscape. This winter we visited the Monastery along the Chama River. What a scenic drive!

The Best Birthday Ever

Submitted: November 1, 2012 Stayed: October 2012
We are a couple in our 40's and have been to Ojo Caliente before. We enjoy going to the Ojo Spa and have stayed at the resort in the past. This particular trip was for my Girlfriend’s birthday and I wanted to have accommodations that she would remember. Being just two people we opted to rent just the main bedroom. I don't think I could have picked a better place to stay. When we arrived, we were greeted by the neighbor who gave us a tour of the casita, key and a remote for the gate to get into the community. The casita was absolutely gorgeous. It is situated in the Hills on the East side of the road and has a panoramic view of the valley. At the time we went the leaves were turning yellow which just made the view even better. The Casita itself appears to have been specifically designed for the location and there are wrap around windows that face the valley. The floor plan is very open with the bedroom open to the living area. The bathroom is very large and has a Jacuzzi jet tub that easily accommodates two people, when you play music in the living area it also plays in the bathroom. The place is far enough from the road that you do not hear the traffic. At times I felt like we were the only people on earth as there are no visible neighbors when sitting on the patio facing the valley. When I go back to Ojo Caliente, I will definitely reserve this casita again.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the great review. The casita is in a perfect location for a day at the hot springs or a drive into the heart of O'Keeffe country. Every season has it's special views and a perfect reason to relax and enjoy!

"Hi Brent! Matt and Aileen came over to our house for a bbq on mon. right from their fabulous stay at your casita. They absolutely loved loved it and had an amazing time!!! They just raved about how every last detail was covered in terms of amenities, furnishings, linens, loved the assortment of music and the sound system throughout. Will definitely go back and we now want to go!! They did quite a bit of hiking and came across a man made dwelling of sandstone that was quite interesting. They google searched it and sure enough found out more info about the dwelling. Are you familiar with this site up in the hills? Anyway, thanks for accommodating them and some business will come your way."

A snowy morning in New Mexico

Submitted: June 18, 2012 Stayed: December 2011
My wife and I took our daughter (30) on her first trip to New Mexico and we could not have picked a better place to stay. We woke up to her outside in a light snow watching the day light start and really feeling she was in old New Mexico. Even with other houses nearby you feel like you are out in the country with no neighbors. It has all the sites nearby and we made it to both Taos and Santa Fe. We had dinner one night at the restauant on site and had a great meal (one of our best!). All in all it was a great visit.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your response! During every season there are beautiful aspects to northern New Mexico and reasons to visit! While it does snow in the winter, it does not typically accumulate in significant amounts around the casita. There are 3 ski areas in the vicinity - at Los Alamos, Santa Fe and Taos – and the hot springs in Ojo Caliente!
