Pine Lodge is in Highland Park a 100+ year old resort area in the city of Grand Haven. We are about 150 yards from the City beach which is adjacent to the State Park. It was our year around home for 26 years until me moved to a conventional home 1/2 mile 'in town' June 1, 2002. It has 3 parking spaces adjacent to it and sits on a small dune, so it's about a normal flight of stairs to get in (not handicap accessible).
The first floor has a half bath with laundry, a fully equipped kitchen with quarry tile floor and an eating nook that can accommodate 10 (if you squeeze). There is a large living room with hardwood floors and the screened porch off it has a narrow view of the lake. The second floor has a full bathroom plus with custom shower, separate claw foot tub, toilet and vanity. The master bedroom has a queen bed and large closet, the 2nd bedroom has a double bed with a trundle twin under it and the 3rd two twins trundle. The 2nd floor rooms are carpeted and the walls and ceilings are ¾” tongue and grove Brazilian hardwood. The third floor is rustic, but clean with pine floors and shiplap wooden walls. Two bedrooms with dormers that look out to the lake. One has a double bed, the other 2 twins trundle. The 3rd bedroom has a twin bed. We keep a TV with VCR and basic cable. The cottage is not air conditioned, but lake breezes and fans keep it comfortable.
We are about a mile walk to downtown and there are hiking trails nearby. Grand Haven has many nice restaurants a nice shopping district downtown, a wonderful boardwalk along the channel and a great playground. Charter fishing boats dock downtown. A 9 screen movie theater is just south of town. Michigan's largest amusement park is 25 miles north and one of USA's 75 best public golf courses just 5 miles south of town. Of course, Grand Haven hosts the world's largest musical fountain that gives nightly performances. If there are any other questions I can answer, feel free to ask.

We are a pharmacist/executive and a retired preschool teacher. We raised 6 children in this home before we converted it to a rental. 19 of our 21 grandchildren live in Grand Haven and love to visit the cottage.
Jim Mathews purchased this cottage in 1975
This was our year around home for almost 30 years until we move to our 'favorite' 'normal' house 3/4 of a mile inland. We moved here when our oldest child was in kindergarden because we thought this would be a great place to raise a family. It was.
Our family has been renting Pine Lodge for 11 years, we have nothing but rave reviews for the cottage and it’s owners Jim and Kathy! We enjoy our summers so much that we even rented the cottage for 4 days in 2011 to celebrate Thanksgiving, staying through that weekend. Our family of 4, our extended family (2 brothers and their families), cousins from IN, and friends from St. Louis have enjoyed the cottage. A cousin made the trek from NY this past summer based on our review of Grand Haven and Pine Lodge!
The owners have been nothing but accommodating, friendly and respectful of our family vacation. The cottage is the total package - can't think of anything it is missing. On the rare occasion that we have had any problems (we can only remember twice) they have addressed them immediately. The neighbors are all fabulous; we’ve been invited to parties at their homes including an impromptu visit at one of the cottages after enjoying one of the beautiful GH sunsets.
We can’t say enough good things about Pine Lodge, its owners and GH in general. It is a great family vacation made better by our renting of Pine Lodge each summer. We look forward to seeing all of the updates that have been made to the cottage each summer and the newest hot spots suggested on the greeting sheet. There are many cottage owners who do not put money back into their cottages, just collect the rent. Jim and Kathy make improvements each year that we have rented.
In general – we are in heaven when we are in GH, staying at Pine Lodge. Our grown children still enjoy and look forward to coming - even if only for a long weekend, they feel it is worth it! We are looking forward to the point when they have families who will join in the fun.
Thank you to Jim and Kathy for providing such a great house for us to enjoy.
July 2014 will mark our 13th summer in a row that we have stayed at Pine Lodge. At the end of each weeklong stay we ask the kids, "should we come back next year?" The answer is always a resounding "YES" (and a few tears from the youngest who doesn't want to go home.)
From the moment you walk in the door, this house welcomes you. With 7 bedrooms (we include the tiny 'closet' room that our youngest uses for her bedroom), 1.5 bathrooms, laundry room, fully equipped kitchen (including a dishwasher), L-shaped screened in porch with an awesome swing that hangs from the ceiling, and a dining room that seats 11 if you squish this "cottage" is perfect for our large family. The lake is close enough for the older kids to get to, but too far for the littles. The screened porch doors latch at the top to prevent little ones from getting out unattended. There is a swing and a bench on the property where young ones can play and still be seen from an adult on the porch.
With a house over 100 years old, there are bound to be issues. We've had a few over the years, but all have been taken care of quickly and with as little interruption to our peace and quiet as possible.
The house is always clean and well maintained. Jim and Kathy are very helpful with any issues we encounter or with questions we have.
We have and continue to recommend this property to relatives and friends.
There are lots of attractions near by and one of our traditions is a family lunch at The Kirby House.
We look forward to coming again this year!
We have rented this cottage several times and it is a great location in the Highland Park neighborhood. We had a wonderful time each time we stayed, however the owner shows up without notice which is a bit disconcerting when you are on vacation. Our disappointment came this past summer when we arrived for a two week stay and after moving in sat down on the couch to the smell of vomit. We could not locate where the smell was coming from, but opened the windows and dealt with it. We had a wonderful two weeks, but upon our return home received an email from the owner accusing us of vomiting in a heat duct under a rug next to the couch and leaving it. He also accused us of playing music to loud, and that our children were saying some inappropriate things out in the street. They were, and we disciplined them for it at the time. This all came from a nosy neighbor (the cottages are all very close together in this area). The music was actually being played late into the evening by a cottage next to ours, and it was actually very nice acoustic guitar played by the person residing in that cottage. The owner also informed us he was keeping our security deposit to clean the carpet in one bedroom upstairs. A guest of ours accidentally walked onto a second floor deck that has a black rubber membrane roof and the black residue came off his feet on the carpet I guess. Never mind that they put chairs on this deck insinuating that you can sit up there. We did not see the stain when cleaning up before departing, and we spent several hours cleaning the cottage before departing. You also pay for cleaning as part of the rental, but we always have cleaned up after ourselves. We left the cottage cleaner than we found it. When we sent a reply to the owner explaining our side of the story we never received a response, nor did we receive any portion of our deposit back. You can clean a whole house of carpet for $200, and he need to clean a 6" footprint. Great location, but rent this place with no expectation of getting your deposit back. There are several year round residents living in close proximity to renters on vacation having fun and it can be a bad mix.
