Overview

Kapoho Cottage Rental Photos and Description

1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

The Lite House is a quality home with super comfortable, high-end furnishings and appliances, in a private and quiet section of a gated community. This is a small home, the perfect place for a couple who wants their privacy, and also a bit of luxury. It is also suitable for a small family (four maximum). The Queen-size bed is 12' thick memory with high thread-count cotton sheets. The quality, inner-spring double bed futon in the living room allows for two more people.

The Lite House is touched on three sides by state land (no immediate next door neighbors) so there is exceptional privacy for being in a subdivision. There is nothing but open space (state land) between the house and the ocean. The property that the Lite House sits on used to be ocean-front property. The 1960 lava flow filled in where the ocean touched the property on three sides, and the shoreline was extended. You might say that it is still an 'ocean-front' property, but now with a bit more of a walk to get into the water (scroll down to see revealing satellite photos).

From the Lite House, you can see the Cape Kumakahi Lighthouse in the distance; its faint glow at night adds charm when you are outside, or looking through the kitchen window. Cooling trade winds are almost always present, and come right through the house when you have the doors and windows open. Enjoy being outside, any time, and with no mosquitoes! At night, the sound of Coqui frogs is a distant and mild serenade.

It's a 3-4 minute walk to locally famous Champagne Pond, where you can snorkel with the turtles or just float around on the calm, volcanically heated water. Lap swimmers have also found Champagne pond to be exceptionally suitable.

In the adjacent neighborhood are the Kapoho Tide Pools (aka the Waiopae Marine Preserve), known for world-class snorkeling. Snorkel gear and boogie boards are provided for your use.

Two bicycles are also provided for exploring the area. The terrain is mostly level, and with very little traffic. The marine preserve is about a ten-minute bicycle ride from the house, or you may drive. Kapoho Beach is a very bicycle-friendly and pedestrian-friendly community.

Hike about a quarter of a mile to the rugged, scenic shoreline and watch the waves crash against the lava coast. When the waves are high you can also see them crashing from inside the Lite House.

Note: We did not design this house, but we named it the 'Lite House' for a reason. Please be advised that it may not be comfortable for 'extra-plus' sized guests.

About Richard or Diane Beers

I (Diane) am a kindergarten teacher having just retired. My husband, Richard, and I are looking forward to spending some quiet-time in Kapoho! We have family there, and look forward to when we can see each other any time we want, just by hopping on our bicycles. And I can't wait to take my air mattress down to Champagne Pond every day and float in the lovely, warm water with the turtles!

Richard or Diane Beers purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Richard or Diane Beers chose Kapoho

We love the constant, pleasant climate of Kapoho, with its famously clean air. Additionally, mosquitoes have had a unrequited lifelong love affair with Richard, so their absence at this particular home's location especially appealed to him! And we enjoy the fact that the location is so peaceful, and with such privacy.

What makes this cottage unique

- New and luxurious

- All new furnishings

- Privacy and Quiet 24/7

- Borders state land on three sides, ocean view

- Ocean-front property before the 1960 lava flow

- Almost always a cooling breeze coming in

- No Mosquitoes

- No loud frogs

- 3-4 minute walk to Champagne Pond

- Bicycles, snorkel gear, and boogie-boards provided

Guestbook comments from the owner

I shared this Lite House with my mom from the time we arrived on the evening of the 11th until now. This lovely home is ideal for quaint evenings in and walks in the nearby area (location is fabulous) & close enough to the beach/Champagne Pools but far enough from the city noise. I thank you for putting together this sweet, sweet place, we have enjoyed comfort and relaxation here at best. For guests to come lend your senses to the sounds of the ocean (we keep the back door open when we are home), the starry night-sky, the smells of native flora and vegetation around, and the sensation of the winds & breezes. What a gorgeous home & a delightful vacation here. My mom & I & father in heart have thoroughly loved it here.

What a beautiful place to be. The house is perfect and also the neighborhood. The house have all you need. The view of the courtyard is great (lava).

A few step to the pond and snorkling

It's peacefull and calm. We'll return for sure.

Just do your grocery or purchase to Hilo.

Merci à Diane et Richard

We stayed eight nights at the Lite house and absolutely loved it. It had everything we needed. Loved the location for exploring Puna and surrounding areas. We enjoyed our time very much. The owners are great. Would definitely rent the Lite house again. Hopefully next year!

Reviewer Comments:

My wife and I spend the first half of our 10-day honeymoon in the Big Island at this secluded location. But due to the hurricanes the had recently passed through the Big Island, we arrived at the cottage with no power. The owners, however, did alert us with the power outage a week prior to our arrival and as well as daily email reports from the local electricity company while we were there. The property finally did regain its electricity but a week after we had already left. Bummer. Our days consist of mostly driving to the town of Hilo, which is roughly about 20 miles round trip and eating out every night. Because of the power outage and hurricane, we could not use the cottage's full potential:

1.) The toolshed were the BBQ grill was stored had been flattened by the hurricanes.

2.) Gas stoves did work but we could not cook since we didn't have any means of refrigeration. A cooler in the cottage would have been great!

3.) There was plenty of cool breezes to keep you cool, but there were moments in the middle of the night when the breeze just abruptly stopped and we were left sweating in bed.

We were happy that the owners gave us a 15% daily discount for our inconveniences. A few months later, they gave us a future discount if we decide to stay at the same location. We hope to go back in the near future.

We would have rated our experience much higher if not for this.

So good we wish we had stayed longer...

  • 5 of 5

This charming cottage was one of 4 places that we stayed at during a 3-1/2 week trip to Big Island over the xmas holidays. We live downtown in a large city and as much as we enjoy this, two “cons” are air quality and noise. Given that, we could have happily spent the entire stay here just sitting on the lanai enjoying the big sky, remarkably clean air and peace & quiet!

We love to cook and were thrilled to have such a well appointed and well laid out kitchen (I say this as an architect and cook) - really appreciated the gas stove. Many thanks to the past guests who left quality condiments.

Owners are friendly and were so accommodating that it felt more like we were borrowing a friend’s place rather than using an anonymous holiday rental - would definitely stay here again!!!

Pros, (no cons) include wonderfully laid out kitchen with many utensils and pots & pans, full cutlery set and serving bowls among other things making it easy to work/cook in. The bed and sofa pull-out were comfortable. Laundry facilities great plus soap and stain remover were available. Small notes alongside everything helped immensely as did the manuals for appliances. Extra bedding, towels, storage areas and a great bedroom closet. Small enough space to be cozy and comfortable, with windows that easily opened to allow for some lovely cross breezes. Lanai was so comfortable with small table to eat at and comfortable lounging chairs. Lanai is partially screened against sun but allows for amazing breezes, keeping the mosquitos away. We stayed out there as much as possible to watch the sunrise, eat, read, rest and even loved sitting out there watching the warm rain come in across the black lava. Coqui frog population added atmosphere but were not an annoyance. (Being from the heart of a big city, I’ll take frogs and birds over sirens and street noise ANY day.)

Thermal pool is only a short drive away as were the stellar Waiopae tidal pools. I have mobility issues and have to say the pools take a bit of work to get into. It's easier to access the Champagne pool at high tide but both locations were manageable and well worth the effort! Seeing the turtles quietly resting in the little pool nearby was wonderful.

Definitely get fruit and veg at farmer markets or roadside stalls - fabulous! The owners work hard to make your stay lovely and it shows. Excellent value for your travel $$$!

So well appointed!

  • 5 of 5

My husband I stayed for ten days in November 2014. What a gem of a place to stay. Everything you need is there and the location is wonderful for visiting the Kapoho tidepools. There are so many things to do in this area of the island! Volcano, Hilo, farmers markets, cultural events. Nice change from the tourist filled Kona side. Will be back next time.

Returning Guests....

My husband and I stayed in the LiteHouse February 3-8, 2014, we have stayed on the Kona side of the Island before and decided to stay in Kapoho to explore the other side of the island. We were not disappointed at all, the LiteHouse was very comfortable and had all the conveniences we needed. Champagne Pond is a short walk away and was an amazing place to snorkel and relax. We visited the Volcano, hiked to the Green Sand Beach, and explored this side of the island. We had such a relaxing time that we have booked for the same time next year, looking so forward to visiting again.
