This 1906 cottage has been completely renovated by the owner/decorator. Nestled in the rear of the owner's garden, it is surrounded by neighboring gardens.
Quiet? You bet.
Walking? Out the door to restaurants, shops and local color. San Francisco Bay and the Presidio are an easy walk away.
Public transportation? A block away.
Come see what quiet living in the middle of the City is all about.

Nancy Leavens purchased this cottage in 1980
This is my home, not purchased as a vacation rental.
This detached cottage is surrounded by lush gardens making it quiet and tranquil. It is an easy walk to Restaurants, shopping, City amenities, all right outside the private gate. The best walking area for either urban living or Presidio hiking! Your own private home right in the city!
We stayed in this beautiful cottage for a more than a month. It is situated in the backyard of the house, a private and quite place; backyards, filled up with trees and flowers, surround the cottage.
We loved the sunny bedroom, walking closet and the large bathroom unsuited.
The facilities are good and when you need something Nancy Leavens, the owner, is always very helpful.
Cow Hollow is a beautiful neighborhood with a lot of nice and fancy shops, restaurants and bars in the Chestnut- and the Union Street. The Golden Gate Bride and the Presidio Park are nearby. The Presidio has nice restaurants where you can go for a drink, a meal or an interesting lecture. Every Thursday evening and Sunday afternoon they organize the Off the Grid meetings: a lot of food trucks and a great picnic.
Within 10 minutes by buss, you will be in the center of the town or nearby Fisherman’s Wharf. Nancy helps you to settle in the neighborhood and she will inform you about the local markets, events etc. We had a great time with Nancy and her lovely dogs and we will come back for sure!
If you are planning a lengthy stay in San Francisco/California, Nancy's cottage is the perfect base. First of all, it is located in a quiet, real neighborhood close to two shopping/restaurant districts (Chestnut Street and Union Street), has a bus stop one block away on Union Street (Buses 45 and 41 which take you downtown) and several blocks away on Chestnut Street (Bus 30 which takes you down to Fisherman's Wharf, Ghiradelli Square, etc), a local French neighborhood bistro one and a half blocks away for those times you just want to pop out for lunch/dinner, several local launderers/cleaners, and a corner shop one block away for quick grocery pick-ups. Add to this its proximity to the Marina and the Presidio and it's pretty much perfectly located. We did not have a car, but I believe other guests have and purchased temporary permits to park on the streets. Now let's talk about the cottage itself. Without gushing too much, let me just say that it is charming, comfortable, efficient, and spotless. The kitchen has top-notch appliances (stove, fridge, micro, toaster, dishwasher, toaster oven), and comes completely stocked with pots/pans, dishes, cutlery, and utensils, and even some pantry items like coffee, tea, olive oil, vinegar, flour, etc. The living room is comfortable with a TV, fireplace (gas), lovely garden views, and decorated with just enough of Nancy's travel souvenirs and art work that you feel like you are in a real home, but not so much that you feel like you are in someone else's personal space. There is a lovely dining area next to the kitchen that leads out to a small patio, perfect for morning coffee or evening glass of wine. Throughout the house are portable heaters for zone heating. We used them especially in the morning to take the chill off. There is also a front garden between the cottage and Nancy's lovely Victorian home that has a seating area. Upstairs is a generous bedroom with king-size bed (actually two twins pushed together), a huge closet area, and a very nice bathroom, complete with lots of good towels. All windows in the cottage look out on gardens. The cottage is located at the confluence of neighbors' gardens and they're all beautiful and lush! Add to all this Nancy's two adorable dogs (Sadie and Twyla), who greet you coming and going and often come to visit, and Nancy herself, who is most gracious and helpful, and you have a perfect base for a San Francisco/California visit. Highly recommended!!
Just spent a month at Nancy's picture-perfect cottage exploring San Francisco. The cottage was everything and more that we had hoped for. Fireplace, excellent appliances, exceptionally well-stock kitchen, lots of bath towels, etc. An additional bonus was Nancy's two adorable dogs. Lots of great restaurants in the area as well as grocery stores and a local farmers' market. Close to the Presidio and other tourist attractions. Lots to see and do. We highly recommend this property! Perfect for a month long stay!
We stayed at Nancy's little cottage as our first stop of our 3 week US road trip and it was a perfect start.
Cow Hollow is a quiet, very pretty neighbourhood but really well placed with great shops and restaurants in Chestnut and Union Street within easy walking distance. It was an added bonus that the bus stops on the corner with really convenient connection to North Beach, Downtown , Cable cars, Fisherman's wharf etc.
The cottage itself is really lovely and very well furnished. Bedroom very comfortable with windows on three sides. The kitchen equipped to the highest standard I think we have ever seen, high quality cooking gear and sharp knives! (unheard of). The garden is really pretty and it is so calm, tucked in the garden of the big house (but with independent access.
Unfortunately Nancy was not able to be there when we were but was in touch every day to make sure everything was ok and we were having a good time, as was her friend Pam who was their to receive us and make us welcome.
One of the nicest places we have ever stayed
This is the perfect place for us to stay! Close to family, walkable to public transportation, access to many venues, and a gracious hostess as well. And, her adorable dogs welcome you "home" after your day of activities. The cottage is exactly as pictured…tastefully decorated and fully equipped. It is the best we have found in our twice-a-year visits to San Francisco. We just hope we can "book" our preferred times before others find this wonderful gem.
Stays in San Francisco have long been special but having Nancy's wonderful cottage for nine days made this a fantastic and unforgettable holiday. This little oasis of comfort was beautifully quaint but fully modernized and provided us with everything. We were part of a quiet neighbourhood but could walk to the nearby Presidio, shop on Union Street or catch a close bus to anywhere. A comfortable luxurious bed, completely outfitted kitchen and private patio awaited us each time we returned. We shared Nancy's own blooming and fragrant garden and were greeted by her sweet dogs Sadie and Twyla. Thank you so much Nancy for all your suggestions and especially for your help with the airport. We look forward to next time!
Located in a quiet neighborhood with good public transportation to downtown shops and museums, this 1906 cottage with 21st century amenities is an easy walk to shopping, restaurants and nature. The Historic Presidio and it's open space is a block away. The waterfront is an easy 10 minute walk.
A wide variety of outdoor activities, golf, sailing, swimming (burr), and hiking are right out the door.
There are three neighborhood streets for shopping and dining streets within easy access.
You get the best of city life here!
