Who lived here?

Samuel Dashiell Hammett (May 27, 1894—January 10, 1961) was an American author of hardboiled detective novels and short stories. Among the enduring characters he created are Sam Spade (The Maltese Falcon), Nick and Nora Charles (The Thin Man), and the Continental Op (Red Harvest and The Dain Curse). In addition to the significant influence his novels and stories had on film, Hammett 'is now widely regarded as one of the finest mystery writers of all time' and was called, in his obituary in the New York Times, 'the dean of the... 'hard-boiled' school of detective fiction'. Samuel Dashiell Hammett lived in this apartment while he was finishing writing The Maltese Falcon.

Small and yet spacious.

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I loved this place. It is small, yes, but so nicely laid out that it feels much larger. One of the things that helps make it large is that there is lots of closet space, including a front closet that is big enough to store suitcases. (And there are plenty of hangers - unheard of, in my experience!) It is tastefully decorated so that it feels homey without feeling like you're in anyone's home. In fact, I think this must be just for rentals. The bed was very comfortable and has bedside shelves and two reading lamps. There is a nice, small futon/couch, a round table with two chairs, a large tv with a selection of dvds. There are plenty of towels. Everything was immaculate. The location is on a pretty, tree-lined street. The studio is on the first floor, right above the sidewalk, so if you leave the windows open and someone pauses to talk on her cell phone at 3 in the morning you will hear her. We were there in April and it was coolish and pleasant in the evenings. I noticed that there is a fan in the front closet which might come in handy if it is warm. There are no screens on the windows so if there are mosquitoes (are there any in San Fran?) that could be a problem, I suppose. We had breakfast up on the roof - wow, what a view! The kitchen is fully-equipped, as far as I could see, although we only had breakfast while we were there and did no cooking. The wifi worked fine and there is a very handy power strip on the table so you can charge phones and ipads without having to search for outlets as you do in so many places. The bathroom has an old-fashioned tub with a luxurious shower head. (Getting into the tub could be a little difficult for people with hip problems.) Check-in was easy - the agency that handles this property sent full instructions for passcodes, etc. The renting process was a little confusing because there are apparently more than one agency involved and the prices vary - we received contradicting emails, some from a real person and several from an automated response thing. It was all sorted out eventually and we ended up being happy with everything.

Hammett's hideaway on Nob Hill

  • 5 of 5

I wouldn't say the presence of literary great Dashiell Hammett permeates this charming period flat--there are no whiskey bottles to wade through and no torn reams of typed paper, for starters. But the owners have thoughtfully provided copies of The Maltese Falcon and other masterpieces, and the place itself is simply lovely and ample for a family of three. The retro bathroom and well-equipped kitchen, the street view, the comfy beds and DVDs, the proximity to an excellent coffeehouse/bakery (Flour) and a big Trader Joe's, the nearby tram and the peaceful location generally...it was all great and after a long flight from London, heaven. The rooftop terrace offers a stunning panoramic view of this fabled city.

Live like a local

  • 5 of 5

Work took me to San Francisco to work and instead of a hotel room, I decided to pretend to live like a local and rent this apartment. It was very convenient to get to the office in the Financial District, either by trolley or the #1 bus through Chinatown. It was the perfect launching point for exploring the city during the off hours. Having markets, grocery stores and plenty of great restaurants in walking distance also added to the appeal.

The place itself is small but cozy. It's great for one person or two people who like each other very much. At night the traffic noise dies down, and along with the fabulously comfortable bed you'll get a great night's sleep. This will be the place to stay the next time I'm in town!

Absolute Gem

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed in this Nob Hill studio for 6 nights. It was very clean and the location is ideal. It is close to cable car lines and buses so there is no need for a car. There are several grocery stores nearby and one just up the street. Union Square is a pleasant twenty minute walk down the hill. The neighbourhood is quiet and people are friendly. There are great views from the rooftop deck. We highly recommend this apartment.

Perfect location and apartment

  • 5 of 5

The reservation service was really efficient and easy and any questions I had were deal with immediately by email. The apartment is just great - it's a studio (with a literary provenance!) which is perfectly laid out with all the amenities you can wish for. We loved its location on Leavenworth - close to some lovely deli markets, coffee shops and the excellent public transportation system. But also an easy walk into downtown. I'd have no hesitation in staying in this apartment again.

Great Location, Clean, And Very Fair Rates

  • 5 of 5

The apartment was small, but very clean and comfortable. It is on the ground floor, so expect some noise from the street, but its not any different than anywhere else you might stay, in any city. The kitchen is very well kept, with all the utensils you may need. The rooftop patio is AWESOME, and there is a great deli/grocery store less than a block away. Laundry facilities in the basement are great too. Check in was very easy, and dealing with Bernat and Andreas was very pleasant. Less than a block away from the trolley stop and a couple blocks away from Chinatown. Learn to use the trolley on California street, for getting up and down the hill and you will be good to go. Some of the nearby awesome places to grab a bite to eat would be Umami Burger on Union St. and also check out the tiki bar/polynesian restaurant in the Fairmount Hotel, called The Tonga Room, best cocktails ever, and the food is amazing. Both places are in walking distance.
