About The Owner

I returned to my hometown of Courtenay from Victoria to be near my large extended family and to enjoy a simpler lifestyle which includes gardening, biking, rafting on the Puntledge River and spending time relaxing in our porch and gardens. I am passionate about dancing including Latin, Ballroom, Swing and Salsa with my husband and wonderful network of dance friends.

Favorite places we travel are Vancouver Island, Europe and Mexico where we have enjoyed great stays at VRBO properties. It's a pleasure to host guests from Canada and all over the world at blueberry cottage and chocolate cottage, our two private Vacation Rentals By Owner in Courtenay.

The Owner purchased this house in 2007

Why The Owner chose Courtenay

The location is so private and peaceful, yet so convenient to downtown Courtenay's vibrant shopping and dining. Just a short walk to parks and the Riverway Trail on the stunning Comox Estuary. Close to golfing, kayaking, swimming and boating and just a 30 minute drive to Mt. Washington Alpine Resort for skiing, snowshoeing & hiking.

This cozy one level home (handicap accessible) has a private garden, fenced deck, lounge chairs and BBQ.

Decorated with an eye to detail in shades of chocolate, red and mango, with a mix of vintage and modern furnishings.

What makes this house unique

Our recommended restaurants...The Atlas Cafe (breakfast, lunch, dinner!), Yiamas Greek, Mad Chef, Locals at The Old House, Martines, Black Fin, Rhodos - and there are lots more!

For groceries it's a short drive or a 10 minute walk to Edible Island Health Food Store, Thrifty Foods, Runge's European Deli, The Butcher's Block for local meats, cheese & eggs and to Hot Chocolates & Cakebread Bakery (& Gelato!). Superstore, Quality Foods and Costco are all within a 10 minute drive. For the best selection of fresh local seafood take the stunning Comox Estuary drive to Portuguese Joe's on Comox Road.

Don't miss our fabulous Saturday Farmers Market on Headquarters Rd and from Oct-Apr and at The Native Sons Hall on Cliff Ave (just down the street from blueberry cottage!)

NEW - The Farmer's Market is now also available Downtown on Wednesday mornings in the Summer months.

Coffee shops we recommend in Courtenay are Mud Sharks, Rhodos, Zocola (live music in the evenings) and in Comox The Rocky Mountain Cafe.

Shop at some of our favourite places...The Tea Shop, Laughing Oyster and Second Page Bookstores. For fashions Robert A, Sublime Fashions, Secret Drawers, Maidas, BE (Canadian designers) Red Carpet Consignment and for men Jim's Clothes Closet. For Home Decor there is so much to choose from Downtown - Tab Imports, Rattan Plus, FD Design and Uranus. Find Antiques & Vintage style home decor at Red Living or Courtenay Antiques, Purely Flower Boutique and in Comox at Red Carpet Antiques & Collectables and Consignment Clothing on the corner of Anderton Ave & Comox Rd.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Maureen,

We are so glad we could spend our first Canadian vacation at your lovely Chocolate Cottage. We will remember it as our "home". Thanks so much for telling us the magic river place where we loved to swim in the mornings & evenings. Thanks also for your recommendations about Mt. Washington hiking, The Gourmet Trails Tour and Miracle Beach.

We had such a relaxing and joyful time here. We enjoyed so much having breakfast in the garden & barbeque on the porch in the evening. Love the apple tree - made 3 pies :)

Wonderful Retreat

  • 5 of 5
Thank you so much for offering me and my dog such a fabulous place to hang out during my new home construction. The cottage and location were perfect and allowed me to explore the area.

You were always responsive and made sure I had a contact even if you were away. Chocolate Cottage was cozy and provided me with a home away from home. Thanks again and let's make sure to keep in touch.

cosy cottage, charming hostess

  • 4 of 5
Chocolate cottage has plenty of pluses - good location, lovely decor, 24h WiFi, sunny skylights green garden with a m and most of all, a charming hostess who generously supplied kitchen essentials. The only drawback was thnot having a movie subscription like Netflix and a bit more space both inside and out of for having friends round for dinner! Otherwise it would have been complete!

Owner's Response: I enjoyed hosting you at chocolate cottage Judy and I appreciate both your compliments and suggestions. Although netflicks is not provided there are now cords for connecting guests laptops to the new flat screen TV. If you book again next year and would like to host dinner parties for you family you'll be happy to know that there is a leaf for the dining table and extra chairs. The kitchens at both blueberry cottage & chocolate cottage are well-equiped to handle gourmet meals for numerous guests!

Home Sweet Home

  • 5 of 5
This delightful cottage was exactly as promised. The hostess was informative, and welcoming. Everything we needed for our 2 week stay was provided. The location meant we could stroll along Courtenay River or walk downtown to numerous shops with equal ease. Courtenay is a delightful little town, and having a place that feels like home when you return from explorations adds to the pleasure of your visit.

Excellent vacation experience

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I stayed in Courtenay at the chocolate cottage from Monday to Friday. The descriptions and photos on the VRBO site were accurate and, in many cases, expectations were exceeded.

The peaceful, private cottage location is truly handy to the (walking especially) exploration of delightful downtown Courtenay, pleasant residential neighborhoods, pathways beside the Courtenay and Puntledge Rivers, and the wonderful, forested Morrison nature preserve, all of which are found on maps provided at the cottage.

Anyone who appreciates hand-crafted pottery shouldn’t miss The Pottery Place (5th and Cliffe), a 30-artist collective with a varied and high-quality inventory. We happily spent our vacation shopping budget there.

The restaurants (Atlas, Union Grill, Locals, among others) recommended by the owner were excellent and offered good selections for vegetarians. All those with a sweet tooth should visit Hot Chocolates/Cake Bread Bakery on 5th downtown. House-made chocolates and gelato are outstanding and the baked goods are heavenly. (Berry brioche bread pudding, warmed for breakfast…so good.)

Maureen, the cottage owner, has provided every essential for a comfortable stay. But it’s her attention to the details that really make the chocolate cottage an extra-ordinary place. For us in particular, comfortable seating with good lighting for reading, and an especially comfortable bed with plenty of good pillows and reading lights (is there a theme here?).

Her flair for combining retro with new, and her stylish use of design and color make the chocolate cottage such a pleasant place to be and a hard place to leave. (In a warmer, dryer season, we would have enjoyed spending time on the deck and in the pretty yard.) The cottage, Courtenay, and the Comox Valley are definitely on our “let’s-go-back” list. We will recommend the area and Maureen’s rentals to anyone looking for an excellent vacation experience.

Thank you, Maureen.

Second time around guests.

  • 4 of 5
Our Chocolate Cottage host is most charming and professional. This second visit again met all of our expectations for peace and quiet and is so convenient. We would recommend either of our host's properties to anyone visiting Courtenay. A flat screen TV and updated sofa would further compliment the the property and really 'wow' future guests. For outdoor enthusiasts, the sky is the limit and foodies will find no less than 6 exceptional eateries in town. Thanks again for a memorable visit to Vancouver Island.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your comments - yes, we do have excellent restaurants in the Comox Valley...Locals, Martines, The Atlas and Rhodos are my favourites. We also have a popular Saturday Farmers Market with local produce and meats (and Downtown on Wednesdays in the summer months). Lovely to host you at chocolate cottage again! Maureen

So Private, So Serene, So Quaint

  • 5 of 5
I rented Chocolate Cottage for a month and I wished I could have stayed longer but it was booked solid and I can certainly see why!!! I want to share with others about this little gem as I'm sure they will want to return time and time again. It has all the comforts of home and then some! I loved the beautiful chandlier in the bedroom - nice touch! The interior is spotless and the grounds are so well kept, it's a really peaceful place. It was nice to sit on the patio - so private with the huge trees that surround the property and lots of flowers to admire. The location is so convenient to everything. Walking distance for groceries, downtown shops - it's pretty central to everything. Maureen is the ultimate host....she definitely goes out of her way to ensure you are enjoying your stay. Be sure to look at her bulletin board she has some suggestions of places to eat (she highly recommended "Atlas" for a place to eat and I have to agree with her the food is incredible!) And if you like Latin dancing you must go to "The Bridge" - another one of her recommendations of things to do in the valley. The beaches are merely a 5 to 10 minute drive from the cottage depending which one you go to. I'll go back to Chocolate Cottage in a heart beat!
