Le Nid d’Hirondelle is on the edge of the pretty wine-making village of Rieux-Minervois. This area is famous for its vineyards, and wine tasting tours to local domains can be arranged on request. The village of Rieux was on the medieval pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostella and has a beautiful 11th century heptagonal church with famous stone carvings by the Master of Cabestany. There is an excellent tourist information centre in the village conducting guided tours of the church and offering extensive information on the region and its attractions. Regular concerts are held in the church and in the chateau. There are many places to explore nearby for those who enjoy walking: nearby vineyards, the river Argent Double and the garrigue smelling of rosemary and wild thyme.

Rieux hosts a market three times a week, selling regional produce including cheeses and fresh fruits and vegetables. Rieux has a good range of shops and services.

Other Activities: wine tasting of excellent local wines

Fantastic Family holiday

5 of 5
Submitted: September 21, 2010 Stayed: September 2010
This apartment was perfect for 3 generations of our family everyone had there own large room and bathroom with bath and the front rooms have views from the terrace onto the wonderful gardens. We had a fantastic week where the kids had great fun playing in the pool and the garden climbing trees picking and eating figs and grapes. The great advantage of this place is it's next to the stunning hotel where they can't do enough to help you such as booking taxi's and restaurants and answering any other questions. Also it was great to feed the kids in the apartment while we could leave themin bed and dine in the gorgeous manor house and eat David's stunning food. The apartment was well equipted with all the household appliances we needed including a BBQ. The village is beautiful especially down by the river and make sure you pop into Chateau de Rieux where the very welcoming winemaker Emanual will give you a wine tasting and tour. It's a great base to explore the area such as cruises on the canal du Midi, visiting markets in local villages and Carcassone. I can't recommend this place highly enough.

Those lazy hazy days

5 of 5
Submitted: January 25, 2010 Stayed: August 2009
This is a wonderful place for a relaxing stay. Three generations of our family stayed for ten days in the summer of 2009. The apartment is large, with airy rooms and a well equipped kitchen. You can dine outside and there are some loungers to soak up the sun. The real advantage is that the apertment is next to the classy, charming hotel, run by David and Graeme. David has a laid back attitude to life and was so welcoming and helpful. He a chef with real style. He produced first-class meals ( optional - 3 nights per week) using fresh local produce. We spent our days lazing by the secluded walled pool, drinking chilled beers from the honesty fridge and wandering throught the grounds picking fresh figs and grapes. Our teenage boys loved Carcassonne and other castles and the market at Mirepoix. Excellent local wine and a concert at the local domaine. My main memory - the figs poached in armagnac with liquorice ice cream. Get your flight to Carcassonne and begin to chill.....

A Wonderful Location for a Family Holiday

5 of 5
Submitted: January 24, 2010 Stayed: August 2009
We spent the first 2 weeks of August, 2009 in the apartment which adjoins the hotel. I could not recommend it more highly. We have three young children (5,3 9 months) and enjoyed every minute of our stay. From the fantastic accomodation, privacy, beautiful pool, gardens, friendly staff, delicious food- it was second to none. We have already planned our return visit next year. Well done to the owners David and Graham for creating this wonderful oasis.

Le Nid D'Hirondelle

Le Nid D'Hirondelle
5 of 5
Submitted: January 24, 2010 Stayed: June 2009
I took my three children to stay in Le Nid d'Hirondelle for a week at the end of June 2009 whilst my husband stayed behind to run our business.

From the moment I set eyes on our 'gite' adjoining a superb small hotel, I knew that we had found a gem.

The staff were very friendly and professional and nothing was too much trouble. The gite itself is very stylish and was spotlessly clean. The local supermarket is within walking distance as are a couple of very good restaurants, post office, bakery etc.

I didn't want to drive and David pointed us in the direction of some great activities (which took a few minutes in a taxi) - from a tour of ancient caves and caverns to kayaking on a man-made lake. Of course, we spent a day in Carcassonne too. The children loved the swimming pool (complete with honesty bar too for Mum!).

I would recommend this piece of heaven to anybody who is looking for peace and quiet and excellent hospitality, food and wine, in a small, unspoilt rural French village.

All together a memorable and much enjoyed holiday. We'll be back!
