About Jack & Kealoha

My wife and I are local residents, we were born and raised in Kailua, Oahu. My wife is a teacher and I am a contractor. We have two kids, and two dogs. We love to travel and meet new friends!

Jack & Kealoha purchased this house in 2012

Why Jack & Kealoha chose Kapoho

We chose this location because of the peacefulness, tranquility, and relaxation you cannot find anywhere else and to get away from the hustle and bustle. Not to mention the amazing and refreshing Tide Pools &Champagne Ponds! And approximately an 35 minute drive to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Boat & walking tours to see lava flowing into the ocaen are available.

What makes this house unique

The biggest benefit is that our home is just down the road from the Wai Opai Tide Pools and Champagne Ponds and swimming with all types of sea life. Also you will be staying in a brand new built home starting in Dec. Also just a 5 minute drive to Isaac Hale State Park for Boat & Lava Tour. (WOW!!) a must see.

Modern appointments, great location- what a steal

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here last week for spring break as part of an extended family trip and could not be more pleased. The house is well appointed with modern amenities. We aren't talking a beach house that has been aging for 15 years. The kitchen was modern (only lacking a dishwasher), and the house had a large main bathroom, a large upper suite and plenty of room for our 3 kids (age 3 - 8) plus six adults. Want wi-fi? Got it. Nice grill for cooking outside? Done. Plenty of patio space for lounging or napping during hammock time? Oh, you know it is there.

Look, I love me some resorts where there are throngs of staff waiting on you hand and foot. But that comes with a huge price, especially in Hawaii. If you are searching VRBO you know what I am talking about. This place is about 40 minutes to an hour from Hilo International Airport, with a Wal-Mart and grocery stores on the way. With some simple planning, and shopping before you arrive, you are setup in a wonderful (small) neighborhood near some of the best snorkeling Hawaii has to offer. My 8 yr old daughter caught the snorkeling bug, and we had wonderful father/daughter bonding time every morning and evening as we dove together in calm waters.

Pros:

Modern house well appointed with snorkel gear, kitchen needs, electronics (tvs, dvd, wi-fi, etc) and lounging (lots of couches and a hammock to snooze on).

Walking distance to amazing tide pools with breathtaking, novice snorkel opportunities.

A bit off the beaten path. On the busiest day we saw maybe 20 people spread out over a large area. We could easily get off on our own.

Lush rain forest terrain with fruit trees, tide pools and lots of wildlife. We saw birds, Mongoose, wild pig and more.

Within a 20 minute drive of grocery and some restaurants. Only 40 mins to an hour to Hilo.

Great owners. We had an electrical problem there (GFCI tripping periodically) and the owners did everything possible to fix the problem for us. It was easily worked around, but their attentiveness was ingratiating.

Cons:

No beach. This is where the lava flows, so think lunar landscape, not sandy white beaches. When you go snorkeling you are stumbling over sharp lava rock, so wear decent shoes and gloves. Even then, most of us had some scrapes.

A bit secluded, so you'll want a car for times you just want restaurant food and it is hole-in-the-wall dining.

Rainy side- not constant sun but every day there were hours of light sun for every hour of rain. Be flexible.

Great Home Away from Home!

  • 5 of 5

We were a party of four couples and the place was perfectly suited for the number in our party. The kitchen was great for cooking all of our meals and there was enough space for us to either hang out all together or branch off into different areas. We used the BBQ, crockpot and most of the pots and pans during our stay. Everything worked great, although the knives were dull and could use some sharpening. We did switch bedrooms so more than one couple could enjoy the spacious studio upstairs, which was easy enough due to the convenient washer and dryer on the property.

The tidepools were a short walk away and the snorkeling was perfect. We do recommended walking out to the farthest tidepools for the best coral and chance of spotting turtles and schools of fish. There are plenty of snorkels and masks (10 sets?), so there isn't a need to purchase or rent any, which is very convenient.

As we were concerned about the advancing lava flow into Pahoa (now stalled), I kept in touch via text with the owner and he gave me immediate updates on the situation. All of the main stores and businesses in Pahoa are open now that the lava flow has stalled.

We had a wonderful vacation and everyone was very happy with our rental home!

The house is AMAZING. The beds are comfortable, there were ample towels, the kitchen was totally loaded with pots and pans and ready for use, a large washer and dryer to wash all our sandy towels, complimentary snorkeling equipment, bikes, huge TV's, the works!!

The house was a little too warm during the day with no air conditioning, but the big huge ceiling fans helped. The kids found it a little warm also. We truly enjoyed the porches and the hammock, though and were out for most of the days.

We loved going to the tidal pools and just hanging out in the water.

The owner was nice and helpful and easily accessible.

Really happy all around.

It's Perfect, but not for everyone

  • 5 of 5

I found the owners to be easy to work with and their advice very helpful. I recommend you trade some emails with them before you get there and read the guest book when you do get there.

The house is well-appointed and spacious. The six of us never felt cramped together. It is in a neighborhood that is a mix of locals and other houses built primarily for vacation rentals. I think someone else noted that there is no dishwasher; that is true, but I came to think it made good sense for the climate. It is very humid, and warm enough during the day that you do not want to be adding the heat and humidity that a dishwasher creates. I would put more towel racks up, but that is a minor thing.

We never made it to the champagne ponds, but the snorkeling in the tidal pools was fantastic. Several of us hit the pools most of the days and we never got tired of it. Saw turtles, schools of moorish idols, zebras, several varieties of parrotfish, trumpetfish, and lots of other fish I can't remember the names of. The pools are a bit different each visit with time of day and tide. The end nearer the house has shallower pools and is appropriate for kids and those who are not strong swimmers. The farther end has larger, deeper pools appropriate for stronger swimmers. The closer to the open ocean you get, the colder the water gets, and you see different things. Generally well warmer than the beaches at Hilo. It was seldom crowded, despite the fact that it attracted both locals and vacationers. Walk there in the early morning and it may be just you. Lava rock is sharp. Try to not touch the coral with fin or glove.

There are lots of things to see and do within an hours drive or so, but there is not a lot close by. A couple of the teenagers were a little bored, or a little tired of riding in a car to go do something. Hilo is about an hour off; lots to do there. We learned that the good whale watching is on the Kona side; so, we took an overnight there. Laughed when I saw the sunburned people snorkeling in murky water, excited about seeing some dull fish. General impressions are that the Kona side is fake and more expensive, and the Puna side is more real.

It rained, I think, every day, but it never rained long enough to stop us from doing whatever we wanted.

Cooking some fresh ahi steaks on the grill, adding some fruit from the farmer's market, and eating with family in the tropical breeze is a good way to spend an evening.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your staying at our home and enjoying the beauty and adventure activities that the Big Island has to offer. Sounds like you all needed more time to see so many other things to do in a short period of time. Mahalo, Property Owners-Kapoho

Cannot wait to get back to this beautiful house.

  • 5 of 5

The house was exactly as advertised. Except, we were warned it would rain every day at Hilo, and it did not rain once. Good job Jack! :-)

Seriously the house was large comfortable and well furnished. I do not understand the review of one star only, the only thing I would agree with that reviewer was there is no dishwasher.

But that's why you bring your entire family. We had eight total persons and this large house afforded everybody space to relax. And there is a nice Grass lawn. Exceptional snorkeling is only three blocks away. There was a large selection of snorkel mask, but only one pair of fins. And there were two nice new mountain bikes for cruising around. A park with a large heated swimming area On the shore between the jungle and sea is only five minutes away. Jack answered every phone call and message promptly, even the dumb questions I had which were already answered in the description. There is so much to do on the Hilo side we never even got to the north or south shore. Many sites are an hours drive but we enjoyed driving around the island.

I thought perhaps the neighbors would be noisy but they were not. You do have to get used to the "jungle noises" but I suspect that is true everywhere on the island. Tree frogs and singing birds throughout the night. The house is not air-conditioned but we left all the windows and fans on and it was totally doable. The only mistake we made in planning was not to stay longer.

Again this house was exactly as pictured and as advertised and Jack was a joy to work with. Have fun.
