Beautiful setting and view, layout a bit awkward
This house is in a beautiful setting with gorgeous lakefront views. Being across the "road" (more like a path where cars are allowed) was a non-factor. Serene lake views abound in the kitchen and on the wide, shady porch.
My kids and I live in Louisiana, but come to Michigan every year to visit family (I grew up in Mich.) Vacationing "up north" is among my most cherished childhood memories, and this lovely home and gorgeous lake did them justice.
The house has been added on to from its humble cottage beginnings and it accommodates large families. (We had 10-12 people). However, I found the layout a bit lacking. When you walk in, you're in the kitchen with its beautiful wide-plank pine floors. There are three bedrooms on the lower level, two bathrooms and a small living room (I guess) where my teenage son slept on the pull-out sofa. (His mess also made this room uninhabitable for the rest of us!) Upstairs, there is a large living area with several sofas, a TV and the master bedroom/bath.
I stayed on the lower level with my kids. However, there was really nowhere to relax and hang out. The kitchen had some stools and there were 2 comfy chairs just beyond, but it seemed like the upper level really had the living space. But that was occupied by my sister and her kids (futon, sofas, air mattress.) My parents had the master bed and bath, also on that level. (Side note to owners: my 76-yr-old mom got "locked" into the master bathroom on the first night and couldn't get out. The door stuck and she couldn't get it open from the inside.....she spent 45 minutes in there freaking out and no one could hear her because we were all enjoying the bonfire. She was pretty shaken.)
My other small gripe is the lighting and mirrors in the bathrooms. I shared one of the main floor bathrooms with my kids, and I could barely see my eyebrows in the bathroom mirror! (I'm 5'3") The lighting is also lacking, even if you were tall enough to see yourself. I had to drag my makeup to the kitchen area and apply it there. There were similar lighting issues in the other two bathrooms.
However, these were all small inconveniences and didn't have much bearing on our overall vacation experience (though my mom might beg to differ! lol) Walloon Lake is truly one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited, and this home and area captures its magic in so many ways.
