MONTPELLIER is one of the most exquisite small cities in France, with narrow winding Medieval streets paved in white marble. It is also highly cultured, featuring opera houses, theatres, concert halls, museums and a very respected university. Because the weather is fine throughout the year, it is an ideal destination for winter weekends, thanks to direct flights from London twice daily, with a journey time of just 90 minutes. There are beaches and resorts a few minutes' drive away.
PLACE DE LA CANOURGUE:
Canorgua is the Occitan name for the wetland region, the Camargue, which borders the city to the east. This delightful 17th-century square of box-hedge topiary and hackberry trees, flanked by perfect classical facades, is the most elegant in the city. On the south side the former Court House of 1760 occupies the site of a Maguelone monastery. At one end is a baroque unicorn fountain, sculpted by Etienne d’Antoine, whose Three Graces statue dominates the Place de la Comedie.
