REFINED RUSTIC RETREAT

Winchester Lodge Rental Photos and Description

Lodge, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2.5 Baths, (Sleeps 10-12)

Our lodge is hand-built, from the cedar shake exterior to the pine and cedar interior. Large two story windows fill the great room with sunlight. It is located at the end of a half mile private road, and is totally secluded.

It offers all the comforts of home (A/C, electric heat, washer/dryer, fully equipped kitchen, deck with grill), all overlooking a wooded dell.

Our guests rave about the quiet and peaceful ambiance. One of our guests last weekend (a group of ladies on a getaway) said in the guestbook: 'We leave here a changed people. The peace is consuming. The beauty immense. The sounds refreshing. Thank you for the reviving of my soul.'

We have one master bedroom with queen size bed, a second bedroom with two bunk beds and two single beds, a loft with a full size sofa bed, another loft with a full size futon, and a cupola with air mattress. There are two full baths on the second floor and a half bath on the first floor.

Have breakfast on our sun-dappled deck in the woods, spend the morning walking the woods and fields of our farm and the evening relaxing in the great room, surrounded with warm pine paneling with cedar trim. On clear nights, star gaze from our farm field, where the Milky Way shines across the sky.

Spend your days visiting the Great Serpent Mound, the Amish community or walking one of the many nature preserves in the area, looking for unusual plants and geologic formations.

Keywords: Hand-built light-filled lodge deep in the woods, on a 35 acre farm with trails in the woods, fields, views and ponds. Great bird watching. Private, quiet and peaceful.

I am a retired lawyer turned first carpenter then innkeeper. We bought the Lodge in 2003 when it was framed in and roofed, but had no exterior or interior finish. I finished the house with expert help with the electricity, plumbing and drywall. I am an amateur naturalist and enjoy botanizing and bird watching. We have been coming to Adams County since the 1970's and have always enjoyed its natural beauty and unusual natural features. I now spend my time finishing another cabin on the farm and managing the Lodge, while maintaining the fields on the farm. I have a boxer dog who comes with me everywhere. Dogs are welcome at the Lodge.

George Carr purchased this lodge in 2003

We have owned a farm in Adams County for 20 years. This property, which adjoins our original farm, came on the market in 2002, and we bought it in early 2003. I spend 5 years finishing it, and started to rent it in Fall 2008. We like this location because it is rural and filled with natural beauty and wildlife. It is close to Cincinnati, where we live.

If you like peace and quiet this is the place for you. We have a number of families who spend holidays here, enjoying the cozy atmosphere and the woods, fields and cave. Our guests like to visit the Serpent Mound and spend time in the shops of the Amish community. Many come for the State Nature Preserves and the Nature Conservancy's Edge of Appalachia Preserve. In the Fall, many of our guests are deer hunters looking for one of the big bucks that have been taken out of Adams County.

Beautiful Christmas Getaway!

My family typically meets at our old family farmhouse in Adams County for Christmas each year, but this year it was in the middle of renovations so we needed a place nearby to stay. I can not imagine a better location to celebrate Christmas or just to get away. We were even greeted by a dusting of snow on the ground and an impeccably clean and beautiful lodge. The architecture of the lodge is open and inspiring just like the surrounding forest that you get a 360 degree view of from the cupola. The cave was the best surprise as I had no idea it would be so accessible and some of the more adventurous family member were able to walk pretty far in (bring a couple of flashlights, boots and clothes you don't mind getting dirty if you really want to explore!). For the less adventurous, the trails provide easy hiking and provide a wonderful view of the foothills of the Appalachian mountains next to the restored log barn. My family is proud to have such a beautiful lodging facility in Adams County to showcase its natural beauty! We hope to visit again soon.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for this unsolicited review! We work hard to maintain a first class establishment in the woods of Appalachia. It is gratifying to have our work recognized and appreciated.

Beautiful retreat in the woods

We rented this lodge to celebrate my husbands 65th birthday. It is everything it is advertised to be and then some. From every window you have a beautiful view of the woods. The owners have thought of every amenity that you could need. There is one close- by walking trail that leads to a cave that is an easy hike and fun to do. Probably the best thing is sitting on the deck and listening to nature. We would recommend this rental and hope to return.

What a wonderful place. My husband and I were looking to get away from it all with our twin babies and dog and feel lucky to have discovered this cabin. The lodge itself is impeccably kept, beautifully designed, and full of light. The owners have anticipated their guests' needs - the kitchen was well stocked with pantry items and dishes, free firewood was chopped and waiting, and clean linens and towels were ready upon our arrival. All we needed to do was unpack. The lodge is secluded and private, surrounded by a forest of trees. The peaceful setting, stove fireplace, and handcrafted wood finishes in the cabin made for lovely ambiance in the evenings. We woke to soft bird calls in the mornings. The nearby Amish bakery was delicious, we went twice. It was tough to leave - we were so thrilled with the cabin that we prolonged our stay by one night. Hope to go back soon.

What a wonderful getaway. The house is absolutely gorgeous as is the surrounding property. You can relax and do nothing at all or you can explore. My husband and I spent a fantastic week here with our lab. We went to Cincinnati twice, only about and hour drive. Plenty to do there, awesome restaurants and clubs. We really enjoyed the carriage ride that we took from fountain square. We also went to Newport Ky just accross the river. Newport on the levee was a great place, lots of shops and eating establishments. We also visited historic Maytown Kentucky, not much there but cant wait to come visit again. It was a long drive but well worth it. We were happy to meet the inkeeper George, what a nice gentleman. Planning a return trip soon!!!!

My husband and I wanted to getaway for a few days, but were unable to go out of state for vacation. I came across this wonderful cabin that is out in the country, secluded and away from the busy every day life. We were pleasantly surprised at the affordability, the immaculate cleanliness, and most definitely, the courtesy of the owner. This was the perfect getaway out in nature with a hiking/ walking trail nearby. My husband and I also enjoyed a drive in the country and going to different antique shops. I would highly recommend this cabin for your getaway! It was very relaxing.

The woodwork is hand done and reminiscent of a boat interior.
