The beach close to the villa:
The beach close to the house is rocky with a low level of the waters. It is suitable for snorkeling and for people who love clear waters. In some spots of the close coast the low level of water is suitable for children too, even being stony. In August there are a few local people swimming there, but the beach never get crowded.
Not to far from the house there are some free short natural sandy beaches (towards north). About 2-3 miles north there is the natural reserve of 'Punta Pizzo', where the Caribbean style bay of Gallipoli starts. Here, peace and nature reign and a trekking session in the park is recommended (1 hour walking to get to Pizzo Tower).
Recommended sandy beaches to see in the Gallipoli's bay are: 'Lido Pizzo', 'Punta della suina', from Punta della Suina up to 'Sirenuse hotel' is a very peaceful area and the Gallipoli both south and north beach.
On the other side (towards south), at about 5-6 miles from the house is T.S. Giovanni with its 8 miles of white sandy beach.
Local markets, fun and bargains:
A fun activity is to visit local markets. This is especially true in southern Italy where every transaction seems to involve lots of shouting and waving of arms, excellent street entertainment! Local products are cheap and very fresh. There is a market for pretty well every day if you want to get serious about shopping. I recommend to don't miss out the Gallipoli's local market on Wednesday, located in the new town and the Gallipoli's fish market open three days a week. From this market you can get fresh fish still alive!
How to get here:
The easiest way to get in Salento (province of Lecce) is to fly to Brindisi Airport Papola Casale or Bari Airport.
They are well connected with the major Iternational cities. A tip to keep in mind is to use the train because of the low fares. You may fly for example in a different location and then use the train to get here. The target city to reach is Lecce.
You can reach Gallipoli from Lecce or Brindisi either via bus or train.
To get around a hiring a car is suggested.
Drop me an email if you need more help to plan your transportation.
