If you are looking for a relaxing holiday in Paradise with wonderful friendly people, then look no further than Shades. Tucked away off the main coastal road, but only a few minutes to the beach, Shades is a hidden gem with a feeling of real tranquility and great hospitality provded by Jacqui and Errol. We stayed in the 2 bedroomed penthouse which was fantastic....aperitifs on the patio every evening listening to music...bliss! Sundowners during Daphne's Happy Hour not to be missed (5 ins walk away). Great restaurants: Fish Pot (our absolute favourite), LoneStar, Champers, The Mews, Nishi, Zen at The Crane, all easily accessible by bus (with the exception of Zen). Recommend Cool Runnings Catamaran Trip and the Island Safari for first time visitors. This was our second visit and we will definitely be back. Highly Recommended.
I cannot say enough great things about our vacation in Barbados or our stay at Shades. I think one of the most impressive details right from the start was the care, service, and attention provided by both the SHADES crew. We knew the minute we first talked with Jacqui over the phone about our reservation we were in the right hands. Our theory about how lucky we were to have picked Shades was confirmed within minutes of arriving at Shades when we met other guests who had been coming back to Shades for years, after travelling to many other Caribbean islands and staying at other Barbados resorts and hotels, they kept coming back to the Shades family run business time and time again. From that moment on we knew we did not have a thing to worry about except how much sun screen to put on.
My husband and I chose to spend Christmas in a warm climate and soak up the sun. We came away with so much more; we made “true” friends and cannot wait to get back to Shades and visit them again and again. Shades is truly a home away from home and a family away from home. Because Shades only has 7 units you have the choice to be social with the other guests lounging in the common area around the pool or you can stay tucked away for lovely meals on your private deck. All of the private decks or balconies look out over a luscious green garden where you will be serenaded by a cacophony of birds singing in the morning or whistling frogs singing in the evening. Although Shades is situated just minutes off the Spring Garden Highway you are far enough away from the noise of traffic leaving you the chance to sit back and enjoy your surroundings – from the last light of a sunset painting the sky in splendour followed moments later by a night sky awash with stars.
As for staying in Barbados, originally we were worried that we wouldn’t have enough to do to keep us entertained for two weeks. We couldn’t have been more wrong, we need to go back just to finish seeing the island and exploring the beauty of the landscape and meeting more of the local people. We were impressed with the Bajan’s laid back, easy going attitude and sincere politeness. We have never felt safer or more welcomed while we toured and explored the island.
In fact our itinerary was a little over zealous but what we managed to see and do was so worth every minute.
Our first time to Barbados (only 1 week over school half term 13 - 20 Feb 2010 unfortunately), enticed here by some friends who unluckily had to drop out at the last moment. The first time a place has actually superceded expectation - photos can't do justice to the ambiance of the setting.
Our hosts Jacqui and Errol were most welcoming; the beers after the drive from the airport went down well. Jacqui was very helpful in recommending restuarants, beeches and directions to the local supermarket. She'd even booked a restaurant (The Fish Pot - excellent choice) for St Valentines night for us after I'd e mailed her before our trip.
The apartment was nicely decorated and equiped with ceiling fans and aircon in the bedrooms to ensure it was cool enough to sleep. The pool area was just right with sun for those who wanted it and plenty of shade for me - not that it was crowded. The local beach was literally just across the road and is just how you see in the brochures - shining soft sand, palm trees and clear blue/turquoise water. All along the coast there were beaches just like it.
The restuarants within walking distance were mostly in the hotels and were a bit pricey but others in the next town of Holetown (several in 1st and 2nd street), a short bus ride or 5 or 10 mins by car, were more affordable. Excellent beach bar/restaurant there also.
In short Shades is an excellent place to stay, to either lounge around the pool or to use as a base to explore the island further. We played golf at the Barbados golf club 3 days (the best value course on the island) - they do 3 day, 5 day or 7 day tickets unlimitted golf per day including buggy. Best to play early morning before it gets too hot and slow. Always seemd to be a good breeze to help cool you down and make life interesting.
We stayed with our two kids at Shades in January 2010 and had such a great time. This place is absolutely fantastic! Jacqui and Errol (and Errol´s lovely dad) really make you feel like home, and are so caring and helpful. The apartment was modern, clean, comfortable and well equipped. We enjoyed our breakfast on the patio every morning, having a great view over the lush garden and the pool.
Jacqui helped us with everything from car rental, restaurant recommendations and arrangments with a catamaran cruise.
If we go back to Barbados, we will definately stay at the Shades!
My husband and I have just come back from Shades, and I just had to write a review as it was simply a wonderful relaxing place to spend a holiday. When you are looking for accomodation and read reviews of a place, a 5 out of 5 rating always makes me suspicious - I guess that is down to my scientific background - but I can honestly say that Shades is one place that truly deserves all the praise that previous reviewers have written about. Jacqui, Errol, Barbara and Sabrina made us so welcome, and their customer service is second to none. Jacqui ran us to the supermarket, sorted out our rental car, and gave us all sorts of useful advice. By the time our 2 weeks were up we felt that we had made some new friends, and we will certainly be going back there in the not too distant future!
Local banking, duty free shopping and the supermarket is 5 minutes drive away. There is a 24 hour gas station just a 10 minute walk away that has a well stocked mini mart for your convenience. The buses in Barbados are frequent and there is a bus stop at the end of the road. Shades is situated just 400 yards away from the famous Sandy Lane golf course and 10 minutes drive away from Royal Westmoreland Golf Course and Tennis facilities at the Sugar Hill resort. A 2 minute walk to the end of the road is where you will find Paynes Beach which has the calmest waters in Barbados, ideal for swimming and all water sports.
