Casa Apuana is a light, airy and comfortable family home. It is one of the most private of a small number of properties in an attractive, secure, gated restoration of old vineyard buildings (Borgo le Vigne). There is parking and a delightful, good sized, pool with extensive views. The large downstairs room has a sitting and dining area and a modern fully equipped kitchen. Upstairs are two comfortable bedrooms and a bathroom. The double has fantastic views, the twin has views over the back garden to distant mountains, both have full length windows. The peaceful garden on 3 sides of the house allows the choice of sun or shade at any time of day. The property is surrounded by vineyards and olive groves and the views over the Apuan Alps are breathtaking.
DETAILS OF THE AREA: Casa Apuana is an excellent base for visiting all the major Tuscan sites FLORENCE (1h on the train) SIENA and SAN GIMIGNANO (1.5h), VIAREGGIO and the coast (40 minutes). There are also numerous delightful and less well known places nearby. LUCCA is a walled medieval city, the birthplace of Puccini, with pleasant pedestrianised streets ,cafes, restaurants, shops and music. The Puccini opera festival held in July / August in TORRE DI LAGO is 40 minutes away. At VINCI it is possible to visit the house where Leonardo da Vinci was born and the nearby museum has a fascinating exhibition of his works.
The whole area is wonderful for walking. Notable are the high plateau above PRATO , the mountains and gorges of the GARFAGNANA and ABETONE in the Apennine mountains. The CINQUE TERRE is easily accessible for a day trip.
Local information and our own comments and tips are available in the house and our local contact may be able to offer guided tours.
We just returned from a wonderful stay at Casa Apuana with our 2 children, ages 6 and 8. The villa is exactly as described - clean, airy, comfortable. The area surrounding the villa is so peaceful - with olive gardens and vineyards as the background. The location was perfect for day trips. We visited Lucca, Pisa, Florence and Siena during out stay and always enjoyed coming back to the comforts of the villa. The pool area was lovely and not crowded. There are about 10 villas or so on the property. A few are rented out by other families and some are family cottages for locals. The city of Montecarlo is about a good 30 minute walk or a short 5 minute drive. We loved going into Montecarlo - the village is so charming and had excellent food. In the villa - the owners have provided a great guidebook with suggestions for restaurants. It was much appreciated. The villa is equipped with almost everything you would need - even a small washing machine that came in handy. We did get some unseasonably cool temperature and some days of rain so the only suggestion would be to make sure to bring games etc for your kids - as the TV only has a few Italian channels and there is no wifi. I would highly recommend this villa if you are looking for a great place to settle in and relax with the possibility of seeing some of the beautiful cities in Tuscany. It should be noted that there is also a great vineyard Buanamico right across the street from the front gates. Montecarlo is know as a wine region and we enjoyed tasting the wine and olive oil from the region.
The house is ideal to enjoy Tuscany, easy to walk to the local shops and village, and to hop in the car and explore.Lots to see and do. Lucca is delightful and walking the ramparts is a must! An evening glass of wine sitting in the front garden is a perfect way to end the day, and self catering is so easy with the well equipped kitchen and dining area, but friendly restaurants in the village too. We shall return.
We spent a fabulous week in Casa Apuana. Everything was as described in the brochure. The apartment itself was ideal for our family of 4, clean, homely and furnished to a very high standard. The pool area was terrific and despite the shared aspect, there was always plenty of space for relaxation. Casa Apuana is situated in a perfect location for exploring Tuscany with the added bonus of the charming hilltop town of Monticarlo within walking distance, a lovely place to dine and watch the sun go down with a nice glass of vino. The icing on the cake for us was the chance to visit the Lucca summer festival to see some of our favourite bands. We would love to return sometime soon.
We have just returned from a wonderful holiday in Italy. Following a few days in Rome we drove to Tuscany and stayed at the beautiful and relaxing Casa Apuana, located within Borgo le Vigne, a small group of private residences converted from a former vineyard.
This was our first visit to Tuscany & we chose Casa Apuana primarily because of it's location. It's only a few kilometres from the autostrada at Altopascio, with very easy access to Lucca, Pisa & the coast to the west, San Gimignano & Siena to the south and Florence to the east.
Casa Apuana is exactly as described. It is light and airy. However, despite the heat, the shutters allow the accomodation to remain cool. It is modern, comfortable and very well equipped.
The complex is set in lovely surroundings, the gardens and communal areas are well maintained. The swimming pool is a fantastic addition and especially enjoyed by our two young daughters, who would have happily spent all holiday in it!
The immediate area is stunning, surrounded by vine and olive groves, with beautiful views of the Apuana Alps. Montecarlo is located at the top of the hill, a typical Tuscan village, with lovely bars, cafes and restaurants.
In conclusion, Casa Apuna offers the opportunity to enjoy a relaxing holiday and is in a great location for sight seeing. We would thoroughly recommend it.

We have just returned from 2 weeks in Casa Apuana. We being my wife and I and our daughters who are 20 and 17 and we would all much prefer it if we were still there.
The house is as described and is part of a larger group of properties converted from a farm. It is just outside a village and surrounded by vines and olives in rolling countryside. Although there were other people on site it never seemed crowded and the pool is big enough to cope.
In the house is everything you could ask for and some things I wouldn't have thought of but which came in useful. On the ground floor is a sitting area and a well equiped and practical kitchen. On the second floor 2 bedrooms and a shower / toilet.
The location is excellent, you can do whatever you want. The village of Monecarlo has several good places to eat, is interesting and has great views. If you go a bit further Lucca is only a short drive away, you can get the train to Florence and several other interesting places on the way from Altopascio for next to nothing. San Gimignano and Siena are an hour and a half ish drive away through beautiful countryside. We only went to the coast once but it is easy if you go on the toll road or very interesting but not easy if you don't.
I don't have much more to add other than we would love to return.
Don't take too much stuff, we took about 3 times as many clothes as we needed and there is a washing machine if you need it.
The train station at Altopascio is easy to use it has ticket machines in English and a ticket to Florence cost 5.80 euro. The trains go about every hour. They say from platform 2 but there are no signs for platform 2 only platform 1. What they mean is the platform one set of tracks over, you just walk over the first set of tracks at specially marked places and get on the train (it is easier than my explaination makes it sound).
The Conad supermarket in Altopascio is very good. When we were there it opened 7am to 9pm Mon-sat and 7am to 1.30 pm (I think) on Sunday.
The Puccini Festival at Torre del Lago is worth a visit if it is on. They have a good bar and very reasonable food there and it is easy to find. the location is fantastic by the lake with mountains behind it.
Almost everwhere you go is beautiful.
If you don't want to go up to Montecarlo to eat, Angela's which is near the school and only 10 minutes from the house is good and not expensive.
What a great find ! A lovely appartment in a fabulous setting and very near to Montecarlo which has a very good selection of bars and restaurants. We had several excellent meals and all were great value. Lucca is one of the loveliest towns in Italy and is only about 20 mins away by car.Montecatini Terme is well worth a visit too - it is unlike anywhere I have been in Italy- a bit of Bath and Mayfair- very elegant and impressive! The pool is just the right size and even in the school holidays it was never too crowded and the views from it are stunning. We will certainly go again to this terrific spot. Kevin Fox
Just 30 km from PISA airport, Casa Apuana is 5 minutes away by car or 20 minutes walk from MONTECARLO, a charming medieval village, with fortress, churches, local shops, bank and a wide choice of restaurants. There is a friendly local 'alimentare' / local store 5 minutes walk from the property and 2 excellent supermarkets 15 minutes drive away. The area around MONTECARLO is famous for wine and in the undulating countryside there are numerous vineyards to visit for 'degustazione' and the purchase of wine and olive oil, the nearest is just across the road.
