Panarea Cottage Rental Photos and Description
Cottage, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4-6)
This charmingly, restored holiday cottage is located in the San Pietro section of the island next to San Pietro church. It is centrally located midway between the beaches, the Neolithic Village in Drautto and the numerous shops and restaurants leading to the main port in the opposite direction. It is nestled in tranquility below the main street, away from the busy foot traffic. A lengthier walk past San Pietro, towards town, brings you to the wooded area of Ditella and finally to Calcara where one's effort is rewarded with an isolated, unspoiled beach perfect for packing a day’s picnic and exploring the more remote side of the island, a once prehistoric sacrificial place to the Gods of the Underworld.
The cottage consists of two bedrooms (each room includes an additional sofabed), each with a large, insuite bathroom, air-conditioning, a fully equipped kitchen and a spacious terrace for open air dining with great sea view and a stunning panorama of the smaller islands of Dattilo, Panarelli, Lisca Bianca, Bottaro, Lisca Nera and le Formiche. It is beautifully furnished and decorated with original hand painted tiles. The property is about 50 meters above sea level and 1/2 kilometer from the port. Boat rentals and scuba equipment can be rented at port; lounge chairs and umbrella rentals are available at the main beach (Sotto Castello) in Drautto.
The highest point of Panarea is 'Punto Corvo' (421m.) which can be climbed along a well marked trail, beginning at the south end of the island (Milazzese) and ending at the north end (Calcara). There are other trails which will lead you into the mountain that forms the background of Panarea.
The crystalline waters surrounding Panarea and it's smaller islands allow for swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing and fishing.
For the history lover, Panarea is the oldest island of the Aeolian archipelago and a great source of volcanic stratification. A short hike from 'sotto castello' beach will take you to a natural promontory with the remains of a Neolithic Age, Prehistoric Village. The artifacts from the Village are exhibited in the Archeological Museum on Lipari.
Although most beaches on Panarea are rocky (Calcara), the largest (Sotto Castello), is naturally sandy and others (Caletta, under Hotel la Piazza) and (Caletta Zimmeri) are seasonally sandy.
The island has one main road shared by pedestrians and transport by golf cart vehicles. At night, the absence of street lighting allows a breath-taking view of the stars. On moonlit nights, the island is awash in magical lighting illuminating the whitewashed walls of the typical Aeolian style homes and the fragrance of flowers and fauna. The hewn, century old trails leading up the rugged mountainside provide views of the island and its surrounding sister islands. You can explore its wild beauty by carefully following the moutaintop trail from one end of the island to the other (proper shoe attire and drinking water a must). Spring and autumn offer an array of wild flowers and fresh fruit/produce. Summer brings the heat of the Mediterranean and revitalizing sparkling seas. August sees more in the way of tourism and late night life. Beach wear by day and lightweight, casual chic, in the evening is the only attire needed.
A four night minimum stay is required.
