Attached to Crookhaven Lighthouse this unique property has views that have to be seen to be believed. Sleeping 8/10 people in comfort this renovated cottage and modern extension will be the base for a wonderful vacation. The property consists of a newly renovated cottage attached to Crookhaven Lighthouse, both built in 1843, combined with a beautiful new 'Longhouse' completed in 2008. In low season the Longhouse can be rented on its own. The cottage has 2 double bedrooms with a further room containing a double pull-out bed. From this room a stairway ascends to a large living space with views in all directions. This room has comfortable seating together with satellite TV, DVD, and a music system. Downstairs is a shower room, fully fitted kitchen and dining area. Across the yard is the extraordinary rectangular cuboid of glass resting on two further bedrooms and a full bathroom. Upstairs: a fitted kitchen, a dining table for 8/10, HDTV, DVD, comfortable seating and world-class views.

This property is attached to Crookhaven Lighthouse which remains in the ownership of the Commissioners of Irish Lights and is fully operational. Although situated on Rock Island this is not a true island and access is along a walled roadway which connects to the Goleen/Crookhaven road. The location it truly stunning. From the glass walled Longhouse watch cormorants and guillemots glide through an arc of 270 degrees around the property. Off-shore, at a distance of 7 miles, the world famous Fastnet Lighthouse stands sentinel over the Western Approaches with the sweep of its beam (2,500,000 candelas) lighting up your dining table. 2 miles away is the village of Goleen with shops and pubs. Across the natural harbour of refuge of Crookhaven is the village of the same name which will welcome you summer and winter with a pint of Murphys or a bowl of Chowder. Beaches are close by with the vast Barleycove Beach only 3 miles away. The Mizen peninsula is rich in archaeology, history and flora.

  • There are two bedrooms in the cottage with lovely views out to sea. The additional bedroom in the cottage has a double pull-out bed but the stairs to the upper story is in the corner of the room and so privacy could be an issue. In the Longhouse there are two new bedrooms, each with a double bed and a view of the Fastnet Lighthouse.

Notes: There is a fully fitted kitchen and dining area in each part of the property, although the two parts will not be let simultaneously to two different groups. Although children of all ages are most welcome renters should note that the property is on the very edge of the ocean and there is a significant drop from the boundary wall to the rocks and sea below. Climbing on the wall would be very dangerous.

Boat: An open clinker design fishing boat is available for hire. It has a 15hp engine. Catch fresh mackerel and have them on the table for dinner. There is nothing quite like fresh mackerel with a zest of lemon eaten by the light of a working lighthouse.

Swimming: About 3 miles away you will find the large expanse of Barleycove beach washed by the Atlantic Ocean where the breakers often attract surfers. Other more secluded beaches are also nearby. An invigorating swim before breakfast is recommended but not compulsory.

The property is 5 miles from Mizen Head, the most South-Westerly point in Ireland. In addition to the Fog Signal Station there which is open to visitors you will find a fascinating Interpretive Centre.
