About Turtle Nest Inn

Susan and Thom are originally from Baltimore, Maryland but they met in Cayman. Thom was working as a dive instructor at Don Foster's Dive and Susan was visiting Cayman on a dive vacation. 'We met on a dive trip to Stingray City and the rest is well...history.'

They decided to call Cayman home and bought a dilapidated beach house in the heart of Bodden Town that they renovated and have lived in for over 15 years.

'After Hurricane Ivan destroyed most of Bodden Town and the Island we had to sart all over. We were lucky to find Castaway and decided to renovate the existing structures and make them available to visitors.' The lodge was first to be finished and became available to guest in 2011 and now the cottage is ready too. 'We have tried to make them unique and special and if you come to Castaway we hope you will find our little piece of paradise as magical as we do.'

Guestbook comments from the owner

We could not have picked a better place to stay for a week than here at Castaway Cottage. It is a perfect balance of island life! We felt welcomed from the very beginning as we were met by Thom and Susan (and the delicious rum cake!). The cottage had everything we could have ever needed, plus more. Although we did quite a bit of sightseeing around the island and visiting numerous beaches, it always felt like coming to "home" (away from home).

Thanks for all your lovely recommendations and advice during our stay. We couldn't have enjoyed ourselves anymore! Can't wait to return to your little piece of paradise!

Where Does a Guy Start?

First and foremost we would like to say that the efforts that Thom and Susan put out keeping their properties is nothing short of Herculean! They are a dynamic duo when it comes to client satisfaction. All the little personal touch's that go into the Cottage make you want to call it your own home.

We had stayed at the TNI on a couple of other occasions when we come to the island and had met them through mutual friends of ours in years past.

This year we were married on the beach just down from the Cottage so we thought that we would like some "Honey Mooners privacy" and give the Cottage a shot.

We were greeted at the door by Susan and Thom with big hugs :) Could not have asked for any more accommodating hosts. Thom even went as far baking our wedding cakes! They were monstrous in size and quality, so much so that we didn't even get a chance to eat a piece! After hearing this, Thom baked another for us to enjoy on our one year wedding anniversary. Our only regret is that we won't be able to enjoy it at the Cottage next year as it is already booked for the dates that we want :( ...lol...

We were very rarely inside except to sleep, shower and replenish the cooler that was our constant companion as we basked on the beach that Thom kept up in top shape. Meals were taken on the well constructed/maintained deck overlooking the sea. The car rental that is provided with booking makes for easy access to anywhere on the island that you would care to explore and run to town to get provisions. Normally we don't stray to far from home when we're on island but this year with all of family and friends arriving and departing, we found ourselves quite busy running back and forth to GCM and getting prep's for the "Big Day". (even with all that running around we only burned a half tank of fuel in the Jeep Wrangler!)

We are the kind of folks that like to kick back and take it all in. This includes embedding ourselves with the locals. Bodden Town has just the ambiance that we seek. Everything from the neighbors playing dominos and enjoying family time to Susan's roosters that came to visit on a regular basis. Whatever you do....make sure Duppy gets home for dinner so Susan doesn't worry.

Thom and Susan,

You guys absolutely rock! Our vacation this year at your place was off the hook, over the top beyond our wildest expectations. Thank you guys...for real :)

Perfect!

Thom & Susan are the perfect hosts!

The property is managed by Turtle Nest Inn, which is right next door.

The owners, Thom & Susan own the house and take great pride in it. Nothing was left out, or over looked. They thought of everything - Truly a wonderful cottage. I cannot stress this enough, if you are looking for a beautiful, secluded piece of paradise, then this is it. The pools are only a 1-2 minute walk down the beautiful beach at Turtle Nest Inn.

The kitchen is perfectly stocked with anything and everything you need. The living room is beautiful and cozy for movies at night. The bedroom is perfect with a nice comfy bed. The bathroom is gorgeous with an awesome shower. Outside- the patio is perfect for coffee and drinks. The hammock was great for naps! The beach is gorgeous and Thom even raked the sea grass for us during our stay. The herb garden was great for fresh mint for mojitos!

I can't stress enough that Thom & Susan are great hosts, and were there if we needed anything. Koda, their dog, even came by a few times to say hi! Thanks again Thom & Susan, we would love to come back to your beautiful cottage! All the best! - Ted & Megan

The perfect spot!

  • 5 of 5

My sister and I plan a yearly trip to a Caribbean island just before Thanksgiving. We look for small beach-front accommodations that include full kitchens. Castaway Cottage was everything we hoped it would be and more! It was by far, the most well equipped and cleanest cottage at which we've stayed. The owners were fantastic. Very helpful and informative. The highlight of our evenings was sitting outside with a glass of wine watching the hermit crabs at the "changing station". If you're looking for a nice, relaxing, quiet vacation spot, you won't be disappointed with Castaway Cottage by the Sea!!

A little slice of paradise

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I just returned from our first trip to Grand Cayman and we were delighted with our choice of the Castaway Cottage. The owners, Thom and Susan, went out of their way to ensure we had everything we needed to make our stay the very best. The cottage is fabulous and was perfect for the two of us. I always say that it's the details that make all the difference - and they certainly have paid great attention to the details. The cottage is wonderfully and tastefully outfitted, right down to extra beach towels, a local cell phone and a delicious rum cake! They also make themselves readily available, stopping by on a regular basis to make sure everything is good. The cottage itself is just 50 ft. away from the shore of the private beach that is clean and well maintained. (If you snorkel - it's also some of the best snorkeling on the entire island, just steps from your backdoor.) We spent many hours on the back deck of the cottage just mesmerized by the sight & sound of the surf and the wind in the palms. For us, the cottage location in Bodden Town is far enough away from the 'tourist traps' of Seven Mile Beach and Georgetown, but still just a 20 minute drive away to great restaurants. We also tried some of the local cuisine at both Chester's and Rankin's Jerk Shacks and were not disappointed. It's also just a 25-30 minute drive away from the East End or Rum Point, for those that really like to 'get away from it all'. This was our first visit to Grand Cayman, but it won't be the last - and we will definitely be booking the Castaway Cottage again on our next visit.

Home Away From Home

  • 5 of 5

I booked this accommodation as a surprise to my girlfriend for her 30th birthday. We share the same birthday but I'm 2 years older. From the moment of our arrival, things were perfect. The AVIS/CICO car rental office is within walking distance from the airport and obtaining the vehicle was quick and easy. Having the rental car included in the room rates was IDEAL! The only thing we were required to do was fill up the gas tank by the time we left. We were there for only 5 days but we drove about 500 km throughout our stay in order to do the activities we wanted to do.

The property was immaculate. Thom and Susan take great care in maintaining the look and feel of the cottage. Our arrival was greeted with a fresh rum cake which was enjoyed during breakfast on the crescent patio. The pictures online do not do this place justice. The kitchen was stocked with everything you could have needed (even a blender for pina coladas). Thom and Susan also provided a pre-paid cell phone with $10 on it in case we needed to use a local phone while driving around. On our second day Thom was cutting down some branches and offered fresh coconut water to my girlfriend and I.

The cottage is located on the southern tip of the island and the area was very quiet compared to 7 mile island (west) side. Being where we were, it took about 20-30 minutes to drive to 7 mile island side where Hell, Turtle Farm, Dolphin Discovery, Yacht club, and lots of restaurants are located. Grape Vine café is a little shack/shed very close that cooks up local dishes and is priced very well. The botanical gardens are a bit further to the east but are only about 15 minutes away.

The Turtle's Nest Inn is well named since there is an abundance of turtle grass on the southern side. Turtle grass is a soft grass growing in the water. It kind of freaked out my girlfriend walking/swimming through it but after about 20-30 feet from the shoreline it was gone. The initial depth is only about 1-2 feet going out about 20 feet from shore. The reef outside the resort offered snorkeling and we did see some squid there amongst other fish. Check-in was great and Dwayne was very helpful. He suggested Fantasea Tours to go to Stingray City/Sandbar and Captain Dexter was perfect. He is not part of a big corporation which is what I wanted. It was the quiet season so we shared his catamaran with only one other family of 4. We were not rushed and stayed longer than other charters.

Picture Perfect Honeymoon

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I honeymooned for 10 days in Castaway Cottage and loved every minute. The owners, Thom and Sue, took incredibly good care of us, from the warm welcome and homemade Rum Cake (Sue's specialty) to the daily yard/beach maintenance and general knowledge and suggestions what to see/do on the island. We enjoyed ourselves very much, in the well appointed, and newly remodeled cottage on the beach. From the modern kitchen to new bathroom, flooring and furniture - the house was spotless and well appointed. Outside, the "back yard" overlooks the ocean from a raised deck with ample shade in the afternoon. My wife enjoyed snoozing in the hammock under the palm fronds, while listening to the ocean. The location was great as well, right in the middle of the Island, everything is within about a 15 min drive, in both directions. Pro Tip: Rankin's Jerk Chicken stand is just up the road from the Cottage and has great meals at great prices! My wife and I found ourselves at their takeout counter more than a few times, during our trip!
