Overview

Chalabre Chateau / Country House Rental Photos and Description

Stylish, affordable, self-catering holiday rental in medieval Cathar village

Yobaba Lounge is hidden away in a secret garden in a small but bustling, medieval Cathar bastide in the foothills of the French Pyrenees, 60 miles from the Mediterranean beaches. Stylish, quirky and very chilled, it offers affordable holiday rental accommodation with shops, banks, pharmacies and doctor all in walking distance. The house is a small village chateau, unusual because of its generous proportions and the large walled garden. The oldest parts of the house probably date from the 1500’s, but the major renovations, which give it is architectural character, were done in the late 1800’s. We have sofar renovated about 450sqm of space and restored the original structure of the house using old techniques and building materials. In between the occasional phases of work, YobabaLounge.com is sometimes available to rent as self-catering holiday accommodation. Hip, stylish and affordable - come and enjoy this unique house and the rich culture and geography of the region.

Skiing: Several Pyrenean ski resorts are within 50 minutes drive: Les Monts D'Olmes (1600m-2000m), Axe-Les-Termes (1600m-2100m) and Camurac (1400m-1800m). Les Angles (1800m-2300m) is a 2 hour drive away, but the road is spectacular.

In winter, make sure you have winter tires and chains. The mountain roads can be treachorous, especially if you like to take the minor, but more beautiful roads.

You can stay self-catered or fully-pampered: we can arrange for gourmet chefs to look after you. They have worked with celebrity chefs in the UK (Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and Gordon Ramsey). Please enquiry.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The house was inspected, and now features in this reputable guide. This is what the inspectors wrote:

"This grand, filmic playground of a place is unlike anywhere else. And, on the edge of a Cathar village, fields and stream bounding the natural garden, it's a work in progress; owner Gertrud is restoring the neglected neoclassical manor as a boutique hotel and family getaway. Floor-to-ceiling windows, marble fireplaces, fine wood staircase crowned with a stained-glass lightwell: aristocratic details mix with Gertrud's laid-back colours, thrown rugs on parquet floors and scattering of sofas. Bronze lions greet you in one upstairs suite; in the other, a proud bath sits centrally in a tree-view bathroom. Bed and living-room spaces - two downstairs have working fireplaces - are vast and endlessly flexible. You sleep on high-tech, knee-high 'airbeds' with smooth white linen; furniture is minimal. The big ground-floor kitchen with stainless steel range opens on to the garden. Children can run wild and fish; adults gather for a special occasion. It is quirky, relaxed, dream-like, adventurous. The village, with medieval centre, tree-lined avenues and restaurants, is on the doorstep, the Pyrenees a few miles away. Fabulous.

A Fabulous Place

  • 5 of 5

Seeking to escape the dreary weather in England and wanting to catch up with old friends we arrived at Yobaba Lounge towards the end of August. My husband, 2 teenage children and I loved the big cool rooms beautifully, and refreshingly sparsely, decorated throughout the house. Everything was clean and comfortable as well as functional. I have to confess I wasn't expecting the showers in the enormous bathrooms to work very well but they were fast and really good.

As the weather was glorious, the Garden was where we all spent a great deal of time swapping from hammocks to deck chairs when the prerequisite Pimm's or Champagne came out late afternoon! The BBQ was put to use each evening and remarkably we were able to sit outside eating and watching the sun sink over the Pyrenees with out being attacked by insects, an unexpected bonus!

The Lac de Montbel, about 10 minutes drive away, was a good swimming hole as well as offering pedaloes and sailing. I braved the go karting track in nearby Aigues-Vives with the children and though humiliatingly overtaken on the track by them both, survived! We also explored the Gorges de Galamus about an hour and a half spectacular drive towards Perpignan where we rock hopped and swam our way up the gorge. Our friends' 5 year old swimming on her own for the first time took to it like a proverbial duck to water. The older ones competing for the highest rock to jump from into these beautifully clear deep pools.

We loved the market in Mirepoix, but what was really special was to be able to walk out of the back door and buy croissants from the local boulangerie and eat them in the front garden looking out over the mountains. (Though this did have the effect of making my clothes shrink a little by the end of our 10 days)!

Thank you Gertrud, we had a truly relaxing and enjoyable holiday in your beautiful 'hotel/home'. I hope not too many people find out about this gem as we would like to come back!

Owner's Response: The area seems to attract the most fabulous of people whose quirkiness makes it an honour to meet them. Had it not been for our guests, we would never have known that the area is blessed with short toed snake eagles, THE most aspirational wildlife to be spotted in Europe, or a wonderful wine boutique in nearby Limoux. We love the area. We love to assist you to enjoy it.

Savoir Vivre am Fuße der Pyrenäen

  • 5 of 5

European adventure for one Australian family

  • 5 of 5

In June/July this year we took our three children aged 9, 6 and 4 years on their first trip to Europe. We spent time in Germany and Spain but by far the highlight of our month long holiday was the two weeks we spent in Chalabre. The chateau really was like the house described in the Narnia series and the kids just loved the adventure and mystique of it all. In fact, even I found it hard not to feel like a queen as I descended the sweeping staircase each morning!

It was fantastic to be right in the village, but yet have so much privacy in the large garden. We loved picking mint from the garden each morning to make our fresh tea and even the kids would sit outside with us sipping away - what delight! The house seemed to have this magical calming effect on us all and allowed us to really unwind and reconnect as a family.

We loved going to the local markets and the owner will be able to tell you which days they are on. Carcassone was a real hit as well and as it was only about an hours drive away we spent two full days there. The other day trip that we all thoroughly enjoyed was Gorge de Galamus. This was about an hours drive from Chalabre too and was breathtakingly beautiful and we were able to swim in the cascading pools. They have free shuttle transport up and down the gorge in the afternoons on summer days. Check the net for details.

But for several days it was unanimously decided that we should just all stay in Chalabre. The kids would each morning take our lovely French woven basket (purchased at one of the markets) and trot off to the local shops. They would return as 'proud as punch' with enough fresh fruit and vegetables, bread and cheese for the day. The local shop owners were very patient with our five word French vocabulary and so incredibly kind and friendly with our kids.

I would highly recommend staying in this gorgeous house for those who want to really dive in and immerse themselves in the Southern French culture. It is not a posh hotel but rather so much more - an amazing Narnia-like home full of character and beauty. It has to be seen to be believed!

Magical

  • 5 of 5

I have now stayed in Yobabalounge on three occasions and finance permitting, hope to make a return visit this summer. I was introduced to the area over ten years ago and have stayed in several places locally. What makes Yobabalounge so special for me is not only the space and the relaxed feel of the place, but having a twelve year old son, being in the heart of the village means that you have everything you need so close by and yet, you are in a remote area with all the beauty that brings with it. In the winter, there are several ski resorts to choose from within an hour and a halfs drive. My favourite is Ax les Thermes where there are slopes to satisfy every level. In the summer, there is a fresh water lake near by where there is a beach and a cafe, meaning fun, low cost entertainment. The house is ideal for entertaining and has everything you could need. The area is surrounded by stunning Cathar Castles to explore and eclectic markets.

Some of the decor and furnishings are quirky, but this only adds to the charm and leading a busy urban life in the UK it is the perfect escape. The lady who owns the house cannot do enough to make sure you have everything for your stay. Several of my friends have visited on my recommendation and have had the same fantastic experience. I would thoroughly recommend it and look forward to returning soon.

Most wonderful place on the Whole Planet!

  • 5 of 5

This place is the most wonderful place!! The location in the village and in the region is perfect but why would you ever want to leave the property anyway?

It has everything you could want...or at least that our family could want. An amazing kitchen and dining area, beautiful garden, lots of activities for children, luxurious suites, a ridiculously decadent bathroom that I kept wondering why they didn't turn into another bedroom!, lots and lots of funky so that you feel like you're actually traveling - and living!

Ok, but if you really must leave - the village has the sweetest children's museum that delights even the child at heart. The stream literally has eatable apples floating down it! I have a video to prove it. That was over the top! The church is the best I've ever seen.

The region is also just wonderful. There are 20 wonderful, beautiful and interesting places to see within a very short drive - ranging from go carts (ok, not beautiful or interesting - but some in our group thought it would be fun) to private dining an a abbey.

Oh, and the wine is so cheap, and the locals know how to party. The owners and the staff will make you feel at home and I'm sure proved just that last bit of magic that will make a holiday the most memorable of a lifetime!

Family Holiday with friends in Chalabre, July 2008

  • 5 of 5

Chalabre and Yobabalounge was an absolutely perfect setting for a family wanting to get away from the typical hustle and bustle and overrun nature of southern france during school holidays. We stayed there for three weeks in July 2008 (2 adults and 3 children). It's one of the most relaxing holidays we've had in a long time and the house is so huge we were able to accommodate a number of friends who popped by on their way to other places. So let me start from the beginning: the pictures do not even get close to describing the grogeous garden, huge rooms and simply funky setting that this mansion is in, you never forget that you are in the middle of france in some swanky and ecclectic old mansion, (unlike most mordern appartments we have stayed in in the past). Our children still dream of taking baths in claire's bathroom with the evening sun beaming thru the huge windows. The whole place is very clean and well maintained yet it has not lost it's slightly ruinish charm around the edges. Garden and kitchen are perfect lounging spaces - even when there was 12 of us for a couple of nights.

Location is a little off the beaten track, which is lovelly. If you want more touristy type locations there are loads of activities and places to go and see nearby (you definitely need a car, unless you plan to stay in the garden meditating the whole time). River (down the back lane) and lake nearby (5minutes drive) are perfect for cooling off when it gets hot. Shops and esp. bakery just around the corner are perfect for that breakfast croissant and practicing your french. If in dire need of seeing natives it's fun to go and hang at the local bar drinking pastis or espresso. For the more adventurous there are many activities nearby ranging from white waterrafting, to climbing and hiking. Loads of great castles to go to if you are sightseeing or you just hang in the garden like we did towards the end just enjoying the tranquillity and privacy. Kids loved the trampoline in the garden (spent about three hours on it per day!!) and the billard table and the program (jousting and archery) up at the local Chateau Chalabre. It's just a great location, we loved it sooo much, we're going again. P.S. if you are after a beach holiday then this is probably not apprpriate for you ( nearest beach takes about an hour and a bit to get to)

Located In the very south of France, the stunning area of Languedoc Roussillon - Hérault, Aude, Gard and Pyrénées Orientales - has everything you could possibly want within a short drive. Bordering the Mediterranean Sea, there are miles of sandy beaches, and on the plane expansive vineyards stretch toward the mountains, dotted with almond and olive trees, where more than 40% of France’s wine is produced and is the largest vine growing area in the world. Spend your day cooking, eating and lounging about. Explore the local castles (World Heritage Site Carcassonne, Foix), mountains and pilgrimage paths. Play in the river behind the house, swim in Lac Montbel or walk up to the Chapel where the route to Santiago di Compostella passes on its way to the Abbey du Camon. Follow the Cathar trail so evocatively described in Labyrinth (Kate Moss's book). Visit Montsegure, Queribus, Puislaurent, Peripertuse and more. Explore ancient cave art at Tautavel and Niaux and underground river at Labuiche.

Other Activities: Whitewater rafting, caveing, pilgramage routes, trampoline, donkey trekking

Ski: Several Pyrenean ski resorts are within 50 minutes drive: Les Monts D'Olmes (1600m-2000m), Axe-Les-Termes (1600m-2100m) and Camurac (1400m-1800m). Les Angles (1800m-2300m) is a 2 hour drive away, but the road is spectacular.

A little shabby, somewhat chic, mostly eccentric, and fabulous in proportion. Yobaba Lounge is a boutique hotel in the making. Alas, we are not there yet. We have so far renovated: a most gorgeous staircase with stained glass light well 2 large bedrooms with en suite bath/shower on the first floor. 2 large living/bed rooms which can share the shower room on the ground floor. a massive kitchen leading onto the garden, entrance hall and open plan living area. Plenty of non renovated, but habitable space, if needed. PS3 games console available on request
