Quayview apartment, Brixham
Review Submitted: September 8, 2009
Date of Stay: August 2009
A spacious, light and airy apartment with fabulous harbour views. The apartment was well equipped and comfortable, spotlessly clean and well cared for. The main bedroom is however exposed to quite a lot of street noise all night, with bars and restaurants below, brass bands playing in the old fish market and lorries entering and leaving the fishing quay. The earlier noise was no problem as we have teenagers, who don't go to bed early, but the lorries caused disturbed sleep as did the market stalls being constructed from 6am on a saturday morning! Unfortunately our car did not fit in the dedicated parking space and long-stay parking was quite a walk with bags/luggage. Also beware if buying a weekly parking permit. Tourist information office said we had unlimited parking in all car parks listed in their leaflet, but I got a parking ticket in one of them! Useful otherwise as valid in many car parks across Torbay. All amenities and attractions in Brixham are within walking distance, including a good selection of excellent restaurants. Our only disappointment with the apartment was that the toilet flush in the ensuite broke on the first morning and was not repaired before we left. Brixham itself is lovely, though very hilly and is ideal for those who don't really want to travel too far during their stay. If you wan to to venture further afield, be prepared for lengthy journey times for relatively short distances as there is not really a choice of routes in and out of the town and the ring road around Paignton is extremely congested and slow. We would be happy to visit this property again.
Owner's Response: We want to make every guests' stay as comfortable as possible
and welcome all feedback so that we can make improvements where possible.
Quayview overlooks the harbour and along with the unique views and benefits of the location, there will be the general noise of what is a working fishing town, seagulls and sometimes events such as brass band concerts on summer evenings. However, we don't feel it is accurate to say that noise generated by the any events or nearby restaurants and pubs carries on all night.
If the window to the main bedroom is shut at night there shouldn't be a problem with the sounds of the stalls for the craft market being set up on Saturdays or vehicles going past to the fish market. Shutting the windows makes a huge difference and if guests are able to sleep with the window closed (the apartment is airy) the double glazing, blind and curtains ensure that there shouldn't be any disturbance from any early morning activity. If guests need or want to sleep with the windows open all night and might find the sounds from the harbour or seagulls a problem then Quayview might not be a suitable choice as Brixham is never totally quiet, although the twin bedroom is at the back of the apartment, overlooking a private courtyard away from the harbourside and opening the windows at night wouldn't be a problem.
We received a text to say the en-suite toilet had broken on the third day of the stay and it was looked at the next morning. The flush button had apparently become stuck and damage had been caused when, rather than contact us, the guests had decided to remove the screwed on cistern lid, without unscrewing it, which broke the flush mechanism. The guests said at the time they were happy to manage with the bathroom toilet, we didn’t invoice them for the damage and the repairs were carried out as soon as replacement parts could be found.
We do state that the parking space is not suitable for large cars and the road leading up to it is narrow (although a 4.8m long Mondeo Ghia estate has parked successfully on the space). It is rare for holiday homes in Brixham to have a parking space and if guests are happy to use it, it is an added bonus. However, even if parking elsewhere, it isn’t necessary to walk any distance with luggage as cars can stop at the front entrance as well as drive along the road a the back.
We are always happy to discuss the parking or any other queries at any time.
