I purchased this property in the 1970's from the italian family who built and owned it. I love the colorful history of this neighborhood, the proximity to wonderful Bay Area places, and the convenient walkability!
My home and properties reflect my life's work as an artist. I have loved living in my Berkeley neighborhood for the past 40 years. I am pleased to have my daughter's family in Kiwi Cottage during the school year, and to share it with world travelers during the summer!
"Beautiful home. My wife and I love(d) it. We had a great stay last month. It was perfect. We're going to try to do two weeks next summer."
We spent one month staying at the Kiwi Cottage in August and only have good things to say about the house and the owners. The house is quiet and surrounded by a beautiful garden. It is very well appointed with a comfortable bed and good furniture that is both functional and attractive. The owners couldn't be more helpful and made an effort in getting us oriented, recommending restaurants, food stores, etc. They were also very generous and let us take basil and cucumbers from the garden, and gave us some salmon that they recently caught locally. We very much recommend this very charming house to other visitors. It was a pleasure dealing with the owners and we appreciated their hospitality and the thought that they put into in designing their lovely house.
We spent 2 nights at Kiwi cottage in late July. My son was attending a workshop at Berkeley and we came to visit with my teenage daughter. The cottage was a perfect size for the three of us. It was very cozy and clean and when we arrived there was bottle of wine, sparkling water and a vase of flowers on the table which was lovely.
The location was perfect and it was great to be able to walk a few blocks in the morning and have coffee and wonderful fresh bagels and vegan donuts. There was nice organic market nearby too. I enjoyed running on the biking/walking trail just around the corner from the house. The owners had left a book of things to do in the area and helpful tips. We also appreciated their flexibility in letting us stay a little after checkout time since our flight was later in the day. I would highly recommend Kiwi cottage!
We spent two nights at Kiwi cottage while in Berkeley recently. The house was clean and well-maintained, and our interactions with the owner were very pleasant. Beautiful garden in the yard, walkable neighborhood, amenities nearby. With two small kids, this was an ideal place for us to stay, and we would definitely stay here again.
It's not often that one has a set of expectations which are exceeded many times over when reality is revealed. Like with other reviewers, this was the case with our experience renting the Kiwi Cottage. We hoped for good location and a space well-equipped for a family of three, and instead got a unique comfortable and exquisitely designed home with a terrific layout and every amenity imaginable to make the stay as pleasant as possible. At no point did we feel like we were away from home: the washer-dryer combo, the phenomenal desk workspace, privacy, the ease of parking, the stunning garden - all provided a sense of total domestic bliss. Even our toddler was able to fully appreciate the space: she usually sleeps with us on trips even if an extra bed is available; this time she claimed the little guest room as her own and required a lengthy explanation of WHY we had to leave, every time we prepared for an outing.
This was a fantastic experience in every way. We are grateful to our hosts and can't wait to see them again. (If you get to meet these delightful people in person, it will feel like an extra bonus!)
I spent six weeks at Kiwi Cottage and enjoyed every minute of my stay.
The cottage was wonderful: tastefully decorated, with comfortable beds, well equipped kitchen, modern appliances, office space, laundry facilities, and, of course, a gorgeous garden.
The location was wonderful: within walking distance of great shops and restaurants, close to public transportation-- getting around was incredibly easy.
Finally, the owners /family were wonderful: interesting, gracious, generous, helpful people. They made my visit to Berkeley an unforgettable pleasure.
I have used VRBO many times and Kiwi Cottage is the first place I have stayed that surpassed my expectations! Not only is it beautiful and cozy but very well appointed. Excellent pots and pans as well as sharp chef's knives. It roomy enough for 3 adults to live comfortably for a month.
It turns out to be a full 2-bedroom but the owners can't bill it as such because the 2nd bedroom has a closet outside the room, rather than inside. It was a charming kids room, which worked well for one adult.
I would be remiss if I didn't express just how delightful Sharon and John are as hosts. From sharing their garden veggies, to some fresh caught salmon to attending to any detail. I was truly sad to leave such a charming home. I was looking for a place that I could call home for a month and found it at Kiwi Cottage!
