About this property

Peace and Simplicity Amongst the Meadows

*Welcome to our cottage *We will open for 2024 bookings in Jan. 2024!

If you request to book, please let us know who is in your party and what brings you to Block Island. The cottage is located on our family property where we live and work all summer, so we like to know who's visiting.
We are happy to answer any questions you have about the island - just send a message.

**We are located at the end of a somewhat bumpy dirt road- please note for your vehicle!

On the south end of Block Island, natural quiet prevails. Off of the main road and away from the crowds of summer sits Whitegate Cottage. Sited on the edge of a green meadow, it is built in the old Block Island style facing south.

The cottage has 2 stories with the bedroom upstairs (*Note: stairs are steep and might not be suitable for young children and elderly folks) and the living area / full bathroom with a stall shower downstairs. There is a south facing front deck with table, chairs and umbrella- perfect for a sunny breakfast or evening cocktails.
It is private, quiet and special.

On the main floor, there is a kitchenette with sink, refrigerator, microwave, blender, toaster, coffeemaker, hot plate (no stove range) and all needed kitchen implements utensils for grilling, cooking, and eating. There is a gas grill outside on the deck.

The living / dining area on main floor is comfortable, casual and airy. Upstairs with windows on all 4 sides, the sea-breeze at night will keep you cool so we stock warm blankets.

A outdoor hot / cold shower is in the back of the house -perfect for washing off after the beach or the best morning shower possible on a sunny day. There is also a stall shower in the downstairs bathroom.

The cottage shares a property with the main house and a micro vineyard (WHITEGATE VINEYARDS) that formerly produced wine, but is now mostly for the birds and wildlife. There is also a small flower and vegetable garden, producing herbs, veggies, and flowers which are sold on island. Our property is chemical free we use no pesticides, sprays or inorganic nutrients of any kind.

Whitegate Cottage is at the southern end of the island where the spectacular cliffs on the coastline provide unsurpassed views of the Atlantic and the island interior. You can walk to Vail Beach, Black Rock Beach and Rodman's Hollow. We enjoy the peace and quiet this far out from town. At night, you will hear the ocean, the breeze, and occasionally, the owl that lives in our meadow.

Our town, with plenty of restaurants, bars, shops, and beautiful harbor where the ferry arrives, are about 3 miles away. Note this is NOT walking distance. There are plenty of taxis if you fancy a night out and don't want to drive/bike.

Additionally, Crescent Beach, State Beach, Scotch Beach, and Mansion Beach (the biggest and most popular swimming beaches- white sand, no rocks) are about 3 miles away as well. We are within walking distance to Vail Beach and Black Rock Beach, which are beautiful, rocky, and require a jaunt down a cliff path to get there. It is absolutely worth it- you will find unsurpassed beauty.

The COTTAGE:
Upstairs : Stairs (*steep: see photos!) lead to a single bedroom with 3 beds (2 twin and one full) with a desk and sitting area.

There are ocean views from upstairs, and at night you will hear the surf crashing on the cliffs nearby. The walls and floors are all natural wood in keeping with the island look and feel.

The cottage has its own parking area separate from the main house. There is a front and back lawn, as well as a shady garden path to enjoy.

Block Island is a country setting. There is no traffic light or chain stores. There is one gas station, one bank and two food markets. But there is a brilliant night sky, green island meadows, golden hay fields and the blue Atlantic surrounding your world.

WE RENT BY THE WEEK SATURDAY TO SATURDAY. If you are interested in renting, we advise having a car as we are not within walking distance to town or the more popular swimming beaches. Bike is possible if you like to keep it simple. If you'd like to bring your car, book a ferry reservation at once, but be flexible on times and even days. It's Block Island...nothing is easy but its all worth it.

**It is also possible to rent a car on island, easily, right where you step off the boat.

*We allow one well behaved dog (*there is a $100 pet fee)

PLEASE NOTE: There is now an 8% tax on rentals in Rhode Island as well as a 1% Block Island tax.

Quintessential BI cottage getaway!
Whitegate Cottage is just as pictured: semi-rustic, quaint, breezy, easy, comfortable and super charming! Hubby and I found the double bed very comfortable, but note there are also two twin beds for friends traveling together who don't sleep together. The only caveat, especially if you are traveling with a dog as we were, is the staircase. It is VERY steep, and our Siberian Husky could not make it up (and god forbid, down) at all. It's a quadricep workout for us humans, so just know that. But NOT a show stopper! The location is super private, and exceptionally safe. We never locked up and felt very comfortable with this decision. The hosts could not have been nicer and more accommodating. I did most of my communicating by texting Molly, whose # was available in documentation at the cottage. If you're looking for a stay that embodies all that is special about Block, this is it!!

Lovely
The property was just as described and more. Simple but perfect. So peaceful, relaxing and beautiful. But what makes Whitegate cottage even more special is how amazing the Dolan family is. Even thought they were not on the Island when the ferries were cancelled for 4 days, they kept in touch to make sure all our needs were met. They are one of a kind. We will most definitely be back. Truely good people!

Quiet Getaway
This is a very nice space for people who like to be away from the noise. The property manager is very pleasant and all technical aspects of the rental were seamless. The beds are upstairs and access to the upstairs is by ladder.

This rental property is amazing! The Nolan’s are welcoming and available to help with any questions. Molly called us back five minutes after we left her a message. The property is very special. Bird watching, deer grazing and peace. The bed is amazing. So comfortable!! We loved our week out on the island and look forward to renting here again soon😃

We spend as much time as possible on island in the summer. We are constantly amazed by the natural beauty around us. Living on this island is so unique in that its the smallest town in the smallest state in the USA. Its a mixture of pristine beaches, scenic farmland with grazing cows and rugged cliffs formed by the raging sea.

Why they chose this property

Our property was the Mitchell farm in the 19th century. Hand built stone walls surround our land. Sheep formally occupied most of the property. We have found all sorts of relics from the past around the property..bottles, buttons, pottery shards, iron tools and so on.

What makes this property unique

We had the cottage built in 1996. It was built in the island style with gable returns, hand cut fish scale shingles and wainscoting throughout. We added the full bath in 2005 along with a very sophisticated and environmentally friendly waste-water system which conforms to the very strict island codes. Walk to Vail Beach...quiet, unspoiled and a parking lot for 3 cars.
