Beautiful Rural Cowichan Valley

My husband and I stayed at this rustic cottage for the months of November and December and loved it! There is a big porch/mudroom where we could leave our shoes and clean off the dog's feet before entering. The living room with couch, chair, and loveseat is large enough to host 6-8 people comfortably. The furniture is old, but the kind that you can sink into without a care. The kitchen is large and bright, in fact we hosted our family Christmas at the huge dining room table. We encountered some unusually cold weather during our stay, but the woodstove is very efficient; Victoria and John provided us with enough wood to keep us toasty throughout our stay, so we did not have to resort to using much hydro. Having to open and close the gate was really the only negative for us, but since my husband was away at work much of the time, I tried to look at it as an extra sense of security for me. Were it not for a few inconveniences such as not being able to open the back door (slightly warped and lock too high) this would have been a 5 star for me. It was great to have the run of this beautiful property and to walk the dog by the alpacas and donkeys. If you are looking for simple comfort and a taste of rural Cowichan Valley, this is the place. We would definitely go back.

Good place for the price

My husband and I stayed for a week and the property was comfortable. You are only a few minutes from Duncan and are on a road that is fairly populated with acreages. The owners home is right beside the cottage with some trees separating the houses at the front. The back of the property is mutually shared as the owners have animals that need to be cared for and a garden that they tend. So if you are looking for complete privacy, remember that you are sharing the space with the owners. There is a gate that needs to be closed when you come in and out of the property. There is ample room for parking your car.
The cottage is definitely rustic. It is quite large and nicely laid out. The windows are large and the view at the back of the house is beautiful, overlooking a meadow and the base of the mountain. The kitchen is equipped with the basics and is nicely laid out. The owner went to the trouble of adding small touches, such as freshly picked flowers and pitchers filled with water. There are two bedrooms, but we only used one of them. The bed was comfortable and the bedroom had the nicest furniture in the home. The furniture does need updating. The couches are old and not very comfortable. There was Internet but no cable channels. We accessed TV by using our own Netflix account. Games and puzzles were provided in boxes under the TV. As well, there was ample firewood for the fireplace. The bathroom is nicely updated, but the handle for the shower falls off when you turn the shower on. This happens no matter how careful you may be.
The owner asked that we limit the number of visitors to 10. (Our family isn't that large, so there was no issue). We used the oven twice and tried to use the clean feature. The stove turned off and we could not get it working again.I'm sure that will be repaired shortly. The owners ask that you follow the recycle program for the area, and have posted a list of recyclables on the fridge. They request a separate damage deposit which is returned to you at departure. They also add a $40 flat charge for hydro.More if you use more. They have thermostats in each room. Have to admit to being cold a fair amount in the cabin as we weren't sure of how much hydro we were using.

The llamas and the donkeys are adorable. For the price, it's not a bad place to stay. It has a certain charm and is a good basic place to eat and get a solid nights rest. We would stay again and would recommend it to others.

This was a great place to stay to visit old friends and old 'haunts' in Duncan. We ran out of time and not out of things to do. The cottage has a large, open, bright kitchen and dining room with gorgeous views of the fields and Mt. Prevost. We were fortunate to have a very warm week and were able to dine outside and enjoy the wonderful country setting. The owners are very helpful and I had quick replies to my emails.

Our family had a great time here. A very comfortable and clean cottage, in a wonderful location. Lots of things to do and see, a true delight for all of us.Chemainus was our favourite spot, the beach and small island was great for all, try to go at low tide for some amazing sea life, there is grass and shade nearby. Ladysmith a charming little town. Too many places to mention, we will be back!! Thanks to the owners for letting us stay, they were great.
