Where winters are mild, comfort can be lacking when nights turn cold, as is often the case in old Southern Portugal. So, beds got electric mattress covers, baths and showers a lush supply of hot water and rooms wood burning stoves and fireplaces or solar powered radiators.

Yet, if nights can turn cold, the midday sun has lots of strength, often beckoning for an “al fresco” lunch in the winter light with its ethereal, diaphanous quality.

Tucked away in a nook of rural countryside at the end of a long access road, straddling a ridge overlooking the coastline, the estate offers all one can wish for a quiet get-away: 32 acres of land ensuring privacy, peace and quiet; scenic views; unspoiled landscapes with centuries old knotty olive trees; the rustic luxury of log fires and the old world charm of bare stone walls, beamed timber ceilings, terracotta clad floors and azulejo panels gracing the walls. A place secluded though not isolated.

Wonderful winter season: the land is green, the air ethereal. A charming refuge, a Casinha in local parlance, has all it takes for a romantic get-away: the rustic luxury of antique rural furniture; a bathroom with period fittings, towel heaters, a generous tub, and this tub with a view of the hills; African hardwood parquet flooring in bed- and bathroom that is a treat for bare feet; a glowing wood-burning double-faced fireplace to be enjoyed from a comfortable homey armchair in the living room or from a pile of pillows while reading in bed. Utter snug comfort for two! A private walled terrace overlooking the ocean and shaded by a bougainvillea canopy, is an almost daily invitation for an ”al fresco” lunch as even in wintertime the Algarve midday sun will often beckon. Summary: 68m2 / 750sqft for 2 adults (+ child) with spacious open plan cooking/living/dining area, bedroom (double bed /twin mattresses), en-suite bathroom with tub, shower, twin washbasins, separate toilet, terrace.

What more could we have wanted!

This has to be one of the best!
JJ, the owner and renovator, went out of his way to make the main house available when the cottage we wanted was already taken.
The main house was huge! We were very impressed by the space, traditional décor and fitments. The kitchen had everything one could need, and in season, lemons, grapes, pomegranates, oranges, grapefruit & figs abound; all carefully tended by the owner.The beds were sumptuous, and the widest we've seen!
To enjoy the area in full it is essential to avail oneself of the copious notes provided for visitors, in a variety of languages! Everything from finding the location, to an essential guide to all the eating and watering holes used by locals & visitors alike, providing superb rural cuisine at very reasonable prices indeed. Without this we would have been lost..and hungry!
The property is about 7 Km from the unspoilt coastline of sandbars and harbour. Superb beaches are accessible by a 6 minute launch crossing of the lagoon to the beach proper and open sea. The area is totally undeveloped due to the unstable nature of the sandy coastline, which is quite handy for those wanting a restful time! Peace & tranquility abound.
It was the attention to detail both in the accommodation and by JJ in person, that made the holiday complete for us. Nothing was too much trouble, including procuring bicycles locally and delivering to our door!
We shall be back very soon before everyone finds Monte Serra. Thank you JJ!.

At 2 kms, Angela's small yet well stocked mini-market has most of the daily necessities on the shelves and fresh bread at 9am. Ask her to arrange a free range cockerel for the pot or a home made ice cream cake for a birthday party.

You are just 7 kms north of Fuzeta. From this fishermen’s village a launch will take you across the lagoon to lovely Armona Island for a long walk on an even longer, empty beach.

On week-ends enjoy a bustling farmers’ market or a has-it-all gypsy fair: socks, donkeys, cheese, riding boots or BBQ lunch.

    RATES include water, electricity and gas; cleaning after departure; change of bed linen 1x a week; change of towels 2x a week; in winter heating or firewood for stoves and fireplaces available from the stockpile; high chair, baby cot and pushchair; use of swimming pool and free access to grounds, orchards and citrus groves. Services and supplies not included but eventually to be arranged are: air-conditioning, use of washing M/C, additional beds, bikes, beach towels, laundry, maid service, babysitting, etc. Some applicable extra charges: A/C €35.-/week/room; extra bed €70-105/week, washing M/C €5/run, bikes €20/week.
    Guests may be requested to pay a security deposit amounting to €200 for the White Stables or the Patio House and €100 for the Cottage.
  • ARRIVAL and DEPARTURE.
    The accommodation will be available from 16:00 hrs on the day of arrival till 10:00 hrs on the day of departure. A half day up to a full day rent may be charged if the accommodation is to be made available before 16:00/12:00 hrs on the day of arrival or after 10:00/14:00 hrs on the day of departure, provided such arrangements are possible.
  • BOOKINGS, PAYMENTS and CANCELLATIONS by CLIENT
    A down payment of 25% of the rent will confirm the booking, the remaining 75% being payable not later than 12 weeks before arrival. Clients have the option to settle in 4 instalments of 25% each: the first one at the time of booking; the 2nd, 3rd and last one respectively 12, 8 and 4 weeks before arrival date. In case of cancellation following reimbursement schedule will apply:
    - 83~56 days before arrival date: 50% of the total rent; nil if only 2x 25% were paid;
    - 55~28 days before arrival date: 35% of the total rent; 10% if only 3x 25% were paid;
    - less than 28 days before arrival date: 15% of the total rent.
    Down payments are not refundable. Failure to pay instalments timely can be considered a cancellation.
    If payments in cash have been agreed upon, these will be made on arrival against issuance of the keys. In case of cancellation, Client remains bound to pay the rent as agreed minus any refunds as per the schedule above.
