This self-catering villa is in a truly romantic setting on southern-facing slopes of the foothills of the Pyrenees -- it has glorious views, its own restored ancient chapel, a semi-natural amphitheatre, a castle ruin, a vineyard and woodlands where children can play in security and adults can roam in peace & quiet, a nature-lovers' paradise. A network of country lanes (where driving is a pleasure) gives way to a lane which goes only to the property so there is no through traffic. Yet despite the rural calm one is only 10 minutes drive from shops and 20 mins from the historic bastide of Mirepoix, 50 mins from Carcassonne. Add to this the provision of 7 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, two kitchens and a heated pool ---with barbecue-and-fully equipped outdoor dining area alongside the pool terrace--- and you have the ideal summer holiday rental for a large extended family or two or three families holidaying together who want high-quality self-catering facilities in a lovely environment.

Roubichoux is a hamlet 2 Km,from Sonnac and 7 KM from Chalabre , 60 km from the walled city of Carcassonne and 100 km from the regional capital of Toulouse. There is easy access to the historic towns of Mirepoix (where the romantic medieval town-square is home to the best market in the region) and the castle of Foix, access to the mountains of the Pyrenees. Other castles within 30 mins drive include Puivert and Montsegur where the Cathar martyrs where burned at the stake - now a peaceful hilltop place but one still haunted by its past. A museum of pre-history and the cave-paintings of Niaulx are close by. So too are many outdoor sports-facilities - and there are ski-stations in less than an hour's drive. Andorra & Spain are reachable in less then two hours, although exploring the French Pyrenees on the doorstep would probably satisfy the most ardent motorist.

Notes: Fax & phone service available on demand at owner's house nearby. There are two kitchen areas, each fully equipped with fridge/freezer, dish-washer, washing machine and full cooking facilities - everything necessary for modern cuisine . Access for those with impaired mobility is reasonable with level ground floor, and there is one bedroom on the ground floor with adjoining walk-in shower & WC. Outdoor dining in the sunshine or in shade will be excellent with a fine barbecue area to be provided alongside the pool, more than just a picnic area, it will be fitted with a sink and dining furniture. And of course there will be garden chairs and sun-loungers beside the pool. The photo of the pool, by the way, is as yet a commercial model. The pool was installed in the autumn of 2008 and the surrounds will be finished off in the spring of 2009. In cool weather it will be heated to a good temperature for swimming by a heat-exchange unit.

Situated between the mountains of the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean coast, there is much to see - abbeys, old churches, castles, pretty villages and fortified towns or imposing cities like Toulouse, Perpignan, Narbonne - museums like those of Toulouse-Lautrec and Salvador Dali, cave-paintings like those of Niaux - or festivals and pageants like those of Carcassonne and Mirepoix and more. You will drive on fine autoroutes and quiet back-roads where driving a car is still a pleasure. But you may want to spend most of your time just floating in the pool, browsing in the sun or dining outdoors in the shade or you can explore without leaving the estate of Roubichoux ! The owners, who live nearby, will gladly give you a guided tour of the grounds, including the ruined castle, the restored chapel and the vineyard, as well as advising you what to see in the region and where to find the best wines. Equally you are welcome to roam around and find things out yourself.
