About Linda

My husband and I had always talked about having a cottage on Grand Lake because we think Grand Lake is one of the most gorgeous lakes in Michigan. The water is so clear and the lake is huge. So we are very thankful we are able to have this cottage. We enjoy biking, swimming, and this summer we started kayaking for the first time. (That is John on his kayak in the picture above on Grand Lake). Our niece, who had just begun kayaking herself, had talked us into joining her and some others. John and I also enjoy reading and spending time with our grandkids. In the winter we spend some time snowmobiling with family members and taking in the winter scenery which is really something to see up there. Just sitting in the yard looking at the water and Applegate Island is a pleasure to us; one that we never tire of. We wanted to be close to a city that offered a variety of activites, too. Alpena and Presque Isle always have something to do. Our oldest son and his family enjoyed visiting with us on Grand Lake so much, they too, purchased a cottage on Grand Lake. We would like to welcome you to our 'up north' home away from home!

Linda purchased this cottage in 1996
Why Linda chose Presque Isle

We purchased this home in 1996, and it was built in 1990. The original owners put their heart and soul in building this unique, and charming home. It was built with the intention of being their second home. We call it a cottage, but it is a home with a cottage feel. We choose this area because we had always wanted to to own on Grand Lake. The lake, with it's crystal clear water and 19 named islands, has been named one of the top three lakes on the sunrise side of Michigan. One of our two sons loved being on Grand Lake so much, he too, purchased a cottage on the lake. Our children and grandchildren always enjoy their time spent at the lake as there is always something to do. We do appreciate the close proximity to the city of Alpena, too. In the winter, we snowmobile and truly enjoy the ever changing scenery. We are minutes away from Lake Huron and to see it in the winter is breathtaking.

What makes this cottage unique

When we saw the cottage for the first time, it was in the winter - never even saw what the water would be like. We just fell in love with this charming home. It had so many unique touches. When spring came and we saw how clear the water was with the hard sand bottom, we were extremely pleased. You can sit in the great room and enjoy the view of the lake. We liked the fact that the yard is level between the home and lake. The cottage is close to two historic lighthouses that can be climbed (133 steps in one of them). The paved bike trail in nearby Rogers City is wonderful; part forest, part along Lake Huron. You can stop and swim. We are within a l 1/2 drive to Mackinaw City, 20 minutes from Alpena with museums, scuba diving, and hiking trails. In the winter, the DNR grooms the snowmobile trails. Minutes from the state park. There is just something special about just sitting in the yard looking out at the lake. We enjoy taking a leisurely boat ride along the shoreline of the lake looking at the cottages and driving around the islands. You will never find Grand Lake crowded - even on the holidays!

My family and I thourougly enjoyed our stay at the lake house. Some may call it a cottage but to us it was much more than that, more like a home. The lake was beautiful, It was crystal clear and great for swimming. Many fish were caught in grand lake including a 3lb bass. The home had everything we needed and it was beautiful. We felt right at home during our stay. We spend alot of time relaxing outside enjoying the beautifull view. There was alot to see and do in the area. we enjoyed it so much we are planning to come back next year.
Owner's Response: It means so much to us to hear you and your family had such a wonderful time. We are so glad that you felt right at home because that is exactly what we strive for. Grand Lake is truly a beautiful lake - we love it's sheer size. We truly appreciate your kind words and look forward to your visit next year.

Wonderful vacation home

My daughter, husband and I stayed at this wonderful house for a week and had a great time. The owners were so easy to work with and even had some cold water waiting for us in the fridge when we arrived. The house is clean, beautifully decorated and has everything you might need for cooking, relaxing and having fun. It is on one of the best areas of Grand Lake. My daughter is four and I really needed a spot where she could swim safely and that was weed free. We rented a pontoon from Grand Lake marina less than a mile down the road and enjoyed cruising around the lake. One day we anchored the boat and swam in an area on the lake where the water was only about four feet deep and crystal clear. My husband is an avid fisherman and was very pleased with all his "catches" during the week. Everybody went home happy!! Thanks John and Linda for a great vacation and the use of your beautiful home. P.S. Pooh survived the mail delivery just fine! Thanks again for sending it back so carefully!

Owner's Response: I am so glad you found the sand bar! Isn't that a fun place to anchor the boat? Glad to hear about your husband's fishing success. The note you left for us at the cottage was so thoughtful; thank you. It sounds like you all had a wonderful time at the cottage and it does mean a lot to John and I to hear that. Thank you for the wonderful review and hope you can make a return visit. Glad to hear Pooh arrived safe and sound.

Beyond our expectations - a *perfect* family vacation home

Our family stayed at the Harris’s lake house in July 2011 and it instantly became our annual destination for a relaxing family retreat. I was smitten by the home itself, tastefully decorated, lots of character, comfortable furnishings, beautiful wood work, spacious, and *clean*.

We ended up renting a pontoon at the local marina, which was a mile or two from the home. Grand Lake is HUGE, for those of you who are unfamiliar – it’s 12 miles long and absolutely beautiful. And for staying there so close to a holiday weekend, we were amazed at how quiet and peaceful the lake was. I was able to stretch out on the back of the pontoon and catch some sun and watch the kids play in the water, and every morning & evening my husband and our eldest daughter would head out for some quiet fishing. For those interested, they caught mostly bluegills and a few smallmouth bass.

The yard is perfect for actually using – it’s flat and spacious, unlike most lake-front properties. The kids easily and safely played in the water, which has a nice gradual drop-off. We brought along a few
water games, the lake was easily the highlight of the trip for the kids.

The fireplace in the living room was charming and a cozy place to curl up in front of with a book on the few chilly evenings we had. The peacefulness of the home gave my husband and I the perfect opportunity to just truly enjoy each other’s company without the worries of everyday life.

The Harris’s were excellent hosts. I got the feeling that they truly cared about our time spent at their vacation home. Upon reviewing their displayed list of ‘Things To Do’, we ended up taking a day trip to Mackinaw City, which was just over an hour’s drive. We took the ferry over to Mackinac Island for the day and rented bicycles and toured the island. Perfect quality time with the family.

We heartily recommend their property.
