: Val Les Bains
There are lots of places to visit, including castles, churches and villages around the château. Several are tempting for families, including Les Gorges de L’Ardeche (50 minutes), one of the most famous French canyons where the Chauvet Cave (cave arts) were discovered. There are also grottos in the south of the Ardech. You can take a safari at Peugres (1 hour), & visit a Crocodile Farm nearby.
Lots of local activities are based around the Ardeche river, not least picnicking and swimming! You can also try canoeing, canyoning, and soaking in hot springs at Vals les Bains.
There’s a good spot for climbing, just ten minutes’ walk from the château. You can play tennis and hire bicycles (and motorbikes) at Aubenas or Vesseaux.
Various vineyards are open to visitors. There are lots of festivals and events on locally throughout summer: classical, jazz, theatre, & village feasts. Further afield the major festivals at Avignon, Vienne, Labaume, Aix and Orange take place in July/August.
