My husband and I love to travel and stay in unique homes. When we were looking for a home to offer as a vacation rental we knew immediately this home would be perfect. There isn't another home like it, anywhere. It has a fantastic location in the center of the wine country, is very private and is surrounded by beautiful views and landscaping.
Michael Ray purchased this chateau / country house in 2011
We love Sebastopol. It's rural, but it's 15 minutes close to everything any big city has to offer and it's only an hour drive into San Francisco. People are friendly, open and accepting and the tasting rooms are relaxed and uncrowded.
This home is like no other home. When you drive through the front gate it gives you the feel of arriving at a castle. There is an open floor plan, great for a large or small family, with three bedrooms (king, king, queen, a den/bedroom with a full and a full futon in the large recreation room). You can barbecue out on the deck while dipping in and out of the hot tub ~ or talking to those inside watching TV on the flat screen.
Great place! Can't wait to come back! Don't change a thing - it's just too beautiful here for words!
We had a great time at the Castle House! Michael was very personable and eager to assist. The house is amazing and very quirky. We were two couples with young children - we have a 3 year old and a 10 month old and our friends had a 9 month old - attending the wedding of a friend. The living area and kitchen were great for us. The only issue was that the fourth bedroom is located in the separate games room, which was only an issue for us as we would have liked to have the children in separate rooms. The garden is really nice and was great for the 3 year old. And the games room is different and special!!
The kitchen was well equipped and the climate control was adequate(fireplace, split unit in the living room and loft bedroom, floor warmers in bathrooms). There was ample dining seating for 7 both inside and out. The deck and view were lovely and everything worked well--though 7 of us showering in the 2 bathrooms strained the hot water heater. Everything was recently renovated in main house and was very comfortable, but the hot tub/gazebo and the gameroom/bar remained mostly unrenovated reflecting the house's "colorful" past.
The owner is responsive and warm. There were even some books to read, but bring your own portable speakers. We didn't have anything so we relied on the music channels on the TV for tunes. It's a great location for wine tasting--Sebastopol and Guernesville are very close and Sonoma/Healdsburg are a bit longer of a haul.
Well located - our party of 7 was comfortably accommodated and the Castle made an excellent base from which we made day trips to Napa, Sonoma, Bodega Bay, Healdsburg, and kayaking on the Russian River. The host was extremely helpful and provided us with some great information about the area (and several complimentary vouchers for wine tastings at various local wineries). The Castle's unique design and surprise game room added to our adventure!
The Castle House was the perfect place for our 3 generations (20's, 50's, and 80's) to stay for my nephew's wedding. Plenty of room for all, amazing scenery, and the game room was a great place for my sons and their cousins to hang out. Day trips to Bodega Bay and Healdsburg added to the fun. The owners could not have been nicer or more accommodating. It was perfect!
We are 2 families with kids/teens living in the the Bay Area, we stayed for the Memorial Day week-end at the Castle. Not only is it a unique place by its original architecture, it is also an excellent base to explore the area.
Do not miss Patrick Amiot sculptures on Florence Street in Sebastopol and if you love biking, the area around Westside Road and Wohler Road in Healdsburg is absolutely beautiful, a perfect blend of Tuscany and California. And just under the Wohler Bridge, a small uncrowded beach is ideal for swimming and relaxing.
Owner greeted us and showed us around, gave us some history(you could write a book).Nice house, kitchen, deck and oh yeah, the tunnel and the game room. Good location to RRV wineries,20 Min to Healdsburg, Dry Creek, A-Valley.
We hope to be back.
