In the house you will find a file full of leaflets from the nearby chateaux, museums, open-air cinema... There is full information regarding pony-trekking, donkey hire, carriage rides, canoeing/kayaking, painting courses, hire of bicycles etc. We have also put together a summary of this information, with the necessary phone numbers, to make it easier for guests to plan their time. Should you wish to make any arrangements before you come out, perhaps to enquire about painting courses or long-distance pony-trekking, taxis or bicycle hire, please let us know in good time and we will forward this summary to you.

July and August is the season for village fêtes. Every local town and village of any size has one or more fêtes. Expect sideshows, feasting, music, dancing and fireworks, which can often be seen from the garden. This is also the season of brocante fairs. Local markets are in every sense a feast, and St Antonin (which featured in the film 'Charlotte Gray') with its very large and very popular Sunday market is only thirty minutes away. In early September Cordes holds the 'Fete de la Bonne Vie', which is a food-lover's dream!

The countryside around is perfect for walking. We are close to several long distance GR footpaths including the GR des Gorges du Viaur and the GR 36 Gorges de l'Aveyron, Najac et Cordes. From the house we very much enjoy strolling along the little lanes, enjoying the views of Najac and Cordes and across to the Aveyron Gorges to the west. There is very little traffic on the lanes and such local drivers as you do meet are quite likely to offer you a lift! We have several books of local walks and maps for visitors' use, and have made a note of a few of our favourite walks, some on footpaths, some following the lanes. For those who like river swimming there is an excellent spot at Lagarde-Viaur, about 20 minutes from the house.

We had a wonderful holiday at Le Muret and didn't want to leave. The house is beautiful, exceptionally clean, well maintained and well-equipped with an excellent selection of music which we really enjoyed! We would recommend this property to anyone and hope to return one day to this beautiful house and beautiful part of the world.

FANTASTIC HOME IN A LOVELY COUNTRYSIDE

  • 5 of 5
We had one of the best holidays at Le Muret. The house and grounds are stunning, peaceful and everything you need is there. We loved the fact that it felt like a home and not a rental place. The welcome pack was amazing and with 5 adolescents in the house, the pool and ping pong table were perfect assets. Great place to return to!

OUR PERFECT ANNUAL ESCAPE

  • 5 of 5
We have been visiting Le Muret every summer for the last 4 years and we hope to continue doing so. As is obvious from that, we love it.

The farmhouse is in a fabulous, peaceful location. It has a solitary position high up in the hills with wonderful views across the valley. The terrace provides an excellent location for breakfast, lunch and barbecued dinners. The pool is essential and a tranquil body of water for sunbathing and looking at the wide blue skies. You can even swim in it too!

The farmhouse has lots of land around it, for walks and wildlife watching. There are walks and bike rides that can also be done further afield.

We don’t venture out too much – Le Muret is too much a place for us to read, relax, eat, drink and recuperate from life on the treadmill. But the nearby mediaeval town of Cordes-sur-Ciel is an excellent place for tourists. The nearby village of Salles has a good restaurant. And we usually go to the Sunday market in St. Antonin Noble Val.

Also, the town of Najac is spectacular and not too far away. And Gaillac and Albi are bigger urban centres, with plenty of added attractions, not least the big hypermarkets to stock up at.

You do need a car, both to get to the farmhouse and to get out and about. But once you are there and have fully stocked up the fridge and food cupboards, you don't need to worry about the rat race for at least a week!

Frankly, we would rather not encourage too many new people to book at Le Muret, otherwise we might not get a place each year!

OUR STAY AT LE MURET

  • 5 of 5
We had an amazing holiday at Le Muret. This beautiful old house is set in stunning countryside with far reaching views. The house is very well equipped with everything you could need to ensure a relaxing and easy holiday. The sun shone every day and we enjoyed every meal on the shaded terrace above the beautiful pool. The house keeper was readily available and extremely helpful in dealing with any small queries. The beautiful old town of Cordes-Sur -Ciel had all the amenities we needed during our stay and because the house, grounds and pool were so beautiful we didn't feel the need to travel far.
We have stayed in several French houses but Le Muret would definitely rank as one of our favourites. We would have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone for a perfect holiday.

TEN WENT TO STAY AT LE MURET!

  • 5 of 5
The photograph does not do this place justice! We flew to Rodez Airport from Stanstead, as this proved the cheapest option (1.5 hr flight). The airport is excellent - very small, neat and efficient. Europcar were excellent, with staff accommodating our limited french, and provided us with excellent customer service, making our holiday start well. Instructions to Le Muret were clear and accurate (be careful of Sat Nav as this takes you through the backroads, and not good if you are new to driving on the RHS for the first time). Le Muret was spacious, clean, and furnished in keeping with the age of the property (18th Century we think), and was equipped in a very practical way to ensure our stay was comfortable. We were a party of 2 families with 5 children aged 17-25 yrs - they had a great time in the pool and on the table tennis table using the two bikes. Hiring these sorts of properties which are in the middle of no-where on the top of a hill where noise isn't an issue, with a pool to relax in, good food and the occasional adventure, is the reason they still want to come with us. The area was very medieval (12th Century) and the nearby Kayaking is a must for any age. We hired boats in St Antonin and did 18km one day which took 5hrs including a stop off for lunch on the way. You cannot walk to any shops for the croissants, but this was not an issue, as it enabled us to "be French" in Cordes in the cafes - just like a local. Cordes sur Ciel is 8 km away, and was an absolute treasure pot. Local crafts, cafes, scenery etc enticed us several times - and the steep cobbled roads to the top - is a good workout! We would recommend this property to anyone for just two people to up to 10 people. (Careful of the sloping roof in the loft rooms and low beams for tall people - you do get used to them very quickly!) The Mace and Church families. 2012

Our nearest town is Cordes-sur-Ciel (10 minutes) and we are 30 minutes from Najac and St Antonin-Noble-Val. These are fascinating medieval bastide towns, full of interest and activities. Albi, with its cathedral, Toulouse-Lautrec museum, restaurants, etc. is about 20 minutes away, and we are well placed for trips to many other bastide towns and the Gaillac vineyards. This is an area where villages tend to be ancient medieval settlements and pigeonniérs are found dotted about the fields.

Cordes has a variety of restaurants, several hotels, a wonderful patisserie, butchers, banks, ironmongers, toyshop, garages and an excellent newspaper and bookshop. English newspapers are generally on sale the day after publication. In the summer months there is also a variety of specialist food/wine shops and art and local craft shops. There is a very attractive and useful market on Saturday mornings. There are also several interesting museums and the renowned 'Jardin des Paradis' gardens.
