SARLAT - PEACEFUL, RURAL SETTING WITH SPACIOUS PATIO AND PRIVATE 10M X 5M POOL

Sarlat la Caneda Bungalow Rental Photos and Description

3 bedroom bungalow in a small hamlet in the heart of the Dordogne countryside

“Petit Reve” is situated in the picturesque hamlet of Braulen Haut with splendid views of the surrounding Dordogne countryside. It is just 10 minutes drive from Sarlat, which is regarded as the tourist capital of the Perigord Noir, and within easy reach of the many attractions in the area.

Guests say the spacious covered patio and pool, right next to the house, are key strengths of our property. Whether relaxing with a good book, sunbathing, dining ‘al fresco’ or having fun in the pool, you have the perfect facilities you need for an enjoyable holiday. The garden has grassed areas where children can play safely.

Indoors, the rooms are modern and light. The lounge has plenty of space for relaxing and dining, as well as a TV that receives the range of English channels on Freeview, and a DVD player. WiFi available. The three double bedrooms ensure that sleeping arrangements are kept away from the rest of the house.

It’s modern living in a beautiful rural setting!

Getting there:

By car – Takes about 8 hours, in one stint, from Calais. Find the A20 motorway heading south to Limoges and Brive. Take the exit 55 for Souillac, just south of Brive, and the house is about 25 minutes away. We’ll send you clear directions.

By air – If you do not fancy the drive, there are cheap flights available from various British airports to Brive (30 mins) NEW RYANAIR SERVICE FROM STANSTEAD TO BRIVE begins April 2014, Bergerac (90 mins) and Limoges (2hrs) where you can hire a car. If you are prepared to travel light, the cost of flights + a hire car can be much cheaper than driving, particularly out of season. My last 9-day visit, November 2013, Liverpool to Limoges, flights = £38 (Ryanair), parking at airport = £40, hire car = £190 (VW Polo).

About Kathy Waters

We had camped and caravaned near Sarlat since 1987. We fell in love with the area almost immediately. The beautiful villages and country markets; the stunning scenery; the wide range of events and activities, particularly in the summer. So ... we decided to buy a house.

Kathy Waters purchased this bungalow in 2003

Why Kathy Waters chose Sarlat la Caneda

We wanted a property that would be easy to maintain and great for summer holidays with our family; it had to be fairly near Sarlat, because it's the most fantastic town; and it had to be in a peaceful rural setting. It took us almost two years to find the right house, but 'Petit Reve' (Little Dream) fulfilled all our needs, and more!

What makes this bungalow unique

Location, location, location! Braulen Haut is a very sleepy hamlet, but it's smack bang in the centre of the most beautiful tourist area. Ten minutes to Sarlat (follow my route on the back roads to avoid the summer traffic), five minutes to the river, and close to lots of the main tourist attractions in the area. Ironically, as we've seen it all, we're not great sightseers now. Give me a cold beer, a game of petanque, a dip in the pool and a good meal, and that's my idea of a great day!

A great holiday at Petit Reve

  • 5 of 5
We had a great holiday at Petit Reve. The house was spotlessly clean when we arrived and George had made sure that there was enough food and drink to last for a few days, so we did not have to brave the supermarket right away. The spacious patio and pool are great for chilling out. The house is in a peaceful hamlet, but only 10 minutes from Sarlat, which is a beautiful town. We spent a number of days and evenings in Sarlat where there are lots of good restaurants, some of which had been recommended. There are also many quaint villages, often with markets, close to the house. So, plenty to see and then back to pool to cool down. We will be back!

Our second stay at Petit Reve

  • 5 of 5
We stayed one week this time for personal reasons and we decided to come again because we loved it so much the last time. As others have said, George's help was invaluable in terms of leaving provisions for our arrival, enabling us to take a really convenient flight from Bristol to Bergerac without worrying about shopping the first night. Last time we drove down but this time we flew and hired a car and it was all so easy! Then we just chilled out (mainly because I had a broken leg) by the pool and, as another visitor mentioned, the property is really quite wheelchair friendly. The area is so beautiful - not too far from shops but far enough to be 'in the countryside'. And so many lovely places to visit nearby.

The idyllic perfect "little dream" getaway

The idyllic perfect "little dream" getaway
  • 5 of 5
We had a long drive (by choice) and we were so glad we made the choice to travel down to “Petit Reve”. We arrived late on a Saturday evening and my goodness I don’t think we have ever stayed in such and idyllic property. George sent us sent us clear and useful information prior to our stay including directions along with sending us our key as we were unable to be there to meet him. We arrived to both a well-stocked fridge and cupboards of food & drinks & the lovely wine and beer was a welcome “second to none”. The house was spotlessly clean & very well-stocked (thanks for the wine George).

The house itself is situated in a quiet hamlet, far enough away from everything but close enough at the same time. 10 minutes to Sarlat. There are fantastic castles & towns to visit close by and lots for the children to do, we had 3 with us aged 3, 8 & 9. We spent quite a few of our days exploring the countryside & surrounding areas, visiting places but were always back by the lovely pool for barbecue time in the afternoons / evenings (George – great tips for the barbecue by the way). We simply loved it. The kids had a blast in the pool.
The weather was fantastic with only one day of rain but even on that day we were well able to amuse ourselves.
Chris came to clean and look after the pool more than enough during our two week stay and was fantastic talking to the children ad explaining what he was doing (we have very inquisitive children).
All of us had a fantastic holiday @ “Petit Reve” and indeed are planning our next trip. We don’t have a negative thing to say as it was all so positive and enjoyable. Thanks George & team for everything. We had a very relaxing & enjoyable fortnight's holiday & look forward to returning, hopefully next year!

Perfect, Relaxing Retreat

  • 5 of 5
I don't think we have ever stayed in such an immaculate, well-appointed, well-stocked property; it did (as the saying goes) 'everything it said on the tin'!

Petit Reve is a beautiful place to stay: just far away enough to have the peace and quiet but also close enough for days/meals out. We all thoroughly enjoyed the fact that we didn't have to rush out to the supermarket on the first day, as George had left a fully-stocked fridge (a massive thank you doesn't cover it, George!), and could spend the first few days relaxing by the pool.

We had our disabled son with us, who is in a wheelchair, and whilst the property is not wheelchair adapted it is most certainly wheelchair accessible - we had no problem accessing the property (with one small step) using the terrace and patio doors (rather than the front door) and once inside there was plenty of room.

We had a very relaxing fortnight's holiday; a lot of which was down to the property, as there was never a worry about something not being there and having our own pool was the perfect way to unwind!

We couldn't recommend it highly enough!!

Un bon petit reve - a real dream

  • 5 of 5
George, the owner, sent us clear and useful information prior to our stay including directions, suggestions and recommendations as well as hints and tips to make the most of our holiday. On arrival we were made to feel comfortable finding a clean, well equipped and spacious property. A welcome pack enabled us to relax over a meal with wine and delay the usual need to shop. We spent an enjoyable two weeks exploring the area with its many beautiful villages and lively markets returning to appreciate the idyllic pool and shaded area as in the photo. The only improvement we would suggest is that sheets are made available to replace the 10.5 tog quilts on those warm balmy nights! We look forward to a return visit.

Spring Visit to the Dordogne Region

  • 5 of 5
Just returned from our second stay in this well equiped, comfortable villa in a delightful rural setting. It was lovely to arrive to a beautifully clean house with well stocked fridge and bar. The weather was mixed but on sunny days the shady patio was excellent for a leisurely lunch and the pool inviting. The loudest noise was birdsong! An excellent woodburner in the lounge kept us cosy in the evenings.
The villa is ideally situated for easy access to the many attractions and activities in this fascinating area.
Definitely a villa for all seasons, highly recommended, we look forward to returning.

Owner's Response: I'm really pleased you enjoyed your stay at Petit Reve; thank you for a great review. We do not have many guests in May, which is a shame, because the walks in the area are so beautiful at that time of the year.

“Petit Reve” is located in a quiet hamlet, just out of earshot of the road between Sarlat (10km) and Souillac (20km), which makes for easy access to the many places to visit in the area.

Sarlat will be your abiding memory of this holiday - it's the prime location in the Perigord Noir. It has more medieval buildings per square mile than any other town in Europe and an abundance of restaurants, cafes and bars. The market each Saturday is amazing and, in summer, the street entertainers in the evening are marvellous.

Far too many day trips to mention them all, but canoeing (for softies) on the Dordogne is popular, there is an outdoor pursuits centre 5 minutes from the house, more chateaux than you can shake a stick at, and a country market in one town/village or another on almost every day of the week.

The local food is scrumptious - we'll recommend lots of places to eat to suit all budgets.

Musts – Saturday market in Sarlat; Lascaux Caves (30 mins); Domme (30 mins) market on Thursday and viewpoint over the Dordogne valley; Rocamadour (1 hour) a medieval town perched high on a rocky outcrop, is the most visited site in France after Versailles; Monpazier a bastide town with a medieval festival in July.

WALKING HOLIDAYS from Petit Reve

The local English-speaking paper, 'The Connexion', had this article in July 2012.

'Sarlat footpath network opens - Around 300km of footpaths have been officially opened in the 13 communes around Sarlat. There are several circuits, which are linked together by adjoining paths. Maps for each commune can be found in the local tourist offices. There are plans to publish a map showing routes for the whole of the Sarlat area.'

Footpaths in the area are well marked, and the GR6 (Grand Randonee), a trans-France footpath runs through this area. Great walking and great grub in the villages; particularly good in spring and autumn when the weather is not too hot.

This is next to the large 10mx5m swimming pool which, with its roman steps, is ideal for young children. The outdoor area provides perfect facilities for a relaxing holiday, where you can cool off, snooze or read your book in privacy. The kitchen window looks out over farmland and woods, with glimpses of typically-Perigordian houses and farms. It is suitably equipped with fitted units, a cooker and fridge (washer, tumble-dryer and freezer in the garage), with ample space for cooking and occasional dining. A small room next to the kitchen acts as your larder, drinks-cooling room (another fridge) and a place to keep the loungers.
