The beautiful village of Vila Nova de Milfontes is situated on the estuary of the River Mira in the Alentejo Region of Portugal. It is still relatively undiscovered and retains its Portuguese charm, quite different from the more developed areas of the Algarve. It is approximately a one hour and thirty minute drive from Faro airport.
The village is located in one of the most preserved regions of the European coast with beautiful sandy unspoilt beaches, hidden coves and clear waters.
For those of you who like to explore further afield, there is the historic town of Odemira which is a 15 minute drive and is situated on a hill over the River Mira. Or you can discover some of the best Roman ruins in Europe situated in Evora. For those of you who wish to enjoy shopping and sightseeing the beautiful capital city of Lisbon is just 190 kms away Alternatively, travelling south to the Algave, the town of Lagos can be reached within one and a half hours. For nature lovers you can travel inland through the protected cork forests to the lakes where if you are very lucky you can spot the very rare black storks.
The coastal strip surrounding Vila Nova De Milfontes boasts impressive beaches and coves such as Almograve, Zambujeira do Mar and Cabo Sardao where storks nest in the crags that cannot be seen anywhere else in the world.
There are many restaurants and bars in which to sample the delights of Portuguese cuisine and wine. So within a short stroll of the house there are many outdoor cafes and restaurants offering fresh seafood, particularly at the beach restaurants where you can experience the delights of the barbecued sea bream to be accompanied by local Alentejo wines. The village square offers entertainment in the main summer months. The river is good for water sports, kayaking and boat trips.There is also a small ferry service across the estuary to the large sandy beaches of Furnas.
