THE BEAR HAUS - BEAUTIFUL HOUSE ON THE WATER AT LAKE DUNLAP

New Braunfels House Rental Photos and Description

House, 6 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 5 Baths, (Sleeps 18-22)

This beautiful lakefront home has a unique history. It was originally the home of Emil and Hanna Pallenberg, who became internationally famous with their Pallenberg Bears from the 1940's through 1970. Their travels included Austrailia, Mexico, South America, Canada, and all over the United States with various circus companies, and actually housed the bears at this home during their off seasons. You will find pictures and historical accountings of their travels and shows in the game room.

There are magical twinkling lights in the mature oak trees, and giant cypress trees providing a perfect evening ambiance for family gatherings. The yard is large and will accommodate any evening or day functions for a family gathering, family vacations, company functions, etc.... PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CITY OF NEW BRAUNFELS DOES CURRENTLY HAVE A BURN BAN IN EFFECT.

Family reunions are a natural event here, as are corporate retreats, bachelor/bachelorette parties, and simpler family vacations. The home is kid-friendly, with a designated swimming area just off of the over-the-water deck in shallow water for youngsters, bunk beds, large flat screen tv's, and Wii Console/Games.

The game room is 40 x 25 feet in dimension, providing for the bar area (including a complete back bar), a kegerator (special request), a friendly game of pool, while others sit around the large sectional couch and watch the 55 inch screen tv or play a game of darts. A full bathroom is available in the room. The game room opens from the front of the house and also to the rear of the house onto the yard and waterfront areas. It is adjacent to the hot tub.

The yard is completely fenced, providing safety for pets, but the owners will need to interview the pets! A Pet Deposit is also required.

Adjacent to the over-the-water deck is a boat slip, and a long pier with expansion at the end where you can swim or fish (A fishing license is required). The huge area of water covered by water lilies provides excellent fishing for bass, tilapia, catfish and perch. There are rod holders at the end of the pier.

Whether cooking in either of the two beautiful kitchens or BBQ'ing on the patio, plenty of food can be easily prepared to serve multitudes of guests. There are outdoor dining areas on both the upstairs deck and the downstairs patio, as well as out on the over-the-water deck.

Keywords: waterfront, fishing pier, swimming, over water deck, outside decks, patio, huge yard, handicapped accessible, renovated kitchens, new appliances, unique designs, game room, corporate retreats, family reunions, family vacations, hot tub, pool table,

Guestbook comments from the owner
Bear Haus 1 & 2 are perfect for a large group. The house is stunning!! We had 22 people attend an annual April weekend trip. This is BY FAR the best place we have stayed at. Having two kitchens provided us with plenty of room for our groceries and allowed us to make dinner/bake pizzas so that we could all eat at the same time! The decks were large enough for us to all sit together and enjoy the beautiful outdoor area! The rental process was very easy. We will stay here again!

The home is now owned by the remaining family, John Haas and his wife, Robbie (upstairs), and Barbara Williams, widow of John's brother James Williams (downstairs). This has been a family home since its inception in the 1950's, as the Pallenbergs built on to the original A-frame house to expand it to the size it is today. The family then updated and remodeled the home to the state it is currently in, and remodeled the huge double garage into the completed game room.

The Owner purchased this house in 1950

Our family was fortunate to have this family home in this wonderful location, and now wish to share it with others as we have worked long and hard to rennovate it into this beautiful home.

The sunsets over the lake are the most incredible you will find. The waterfowl add to the magic of the environment, with cranes, wood ducks, cormorants throughout the year, and migrating white pelicans and mud hens vacationing through February. A family of Great Horned Owls has lived in the neighborhood for many years, and you can hear their calls in the evening as you watch the sunset on the water. Hummingbirds, woodpeckers and hawks also call this their home, and provide hours of interesting bird watching.

Great Place - perfect for reunions and get-together

  • 5 of 5
We stayed during the memorial weekend along with 6 families and had one of the memorable long weekend. These are two separate houses with a common game/bar room. It is extremely spacious and well kept. We were about 24 people including couple of toddlers. Everyone had a great time and particularly enjoyed the huge backyard facing Lake Dunlap. The owner is extremely nice and helpful . We got locked out once and the owner came within short time to help us unlock the door. Cathy from property management company "Vacation river rentals" is extremely helpful and always available even during weekends.

Wonderful experience at Bear Haus 1&2

Wonderful experience at Bear Haus 1&2

There were 15 of us scattered over both houses. We had a most wonderful time celebrating the fifty+ years friendship of two of us and the 50th year birthdays of two of our children. We were so enjoying ourselves that most of us didn't leave the property all weekend save for three golfers. We cooked, played games, played pool, did the hot tub, fished, chilled on the back porch; just plain relaxed. We all enjoyed that there was so much room we weren't running over each other and loved the space. Our ages ranged from 9 months to 72 years. We will definitely consider coming back.

Wonderful property especially for large groups

  • 5 of 5
Anytime you rent a property based solely on the pictures featured on a website, you hold your breathe when you arrive. Will it be as pictured or will I find out I've rented a dump! That is why I have chosen to leave a review about this property. The pictures on the website are completely accurate. This property is perfect for a large group. There were 16 adults and 2 children in our group and we rented both levels of the house. In my opinion, the upper level home is the nicer of the two and if you have to choose between the two, you should choose it. It is more up to date with tall ceilings and upscale amenities. The deck on that level is very nice. The bottom house is nice but has low ceilings and feels a little cave like. The game room is very roomy and people can sleep in there too because of the full bathroom. The upper house has a king size bed in the roomy master bedroom and a private bathroom with a bathtub/shower combination. The front bedroom has two queen size beds next to a bathroom that has a walk in shower. The other bedroom has a built in bed that is either a full or queen (this is the room with the lime green walls). There is plenty of floor space in this room for an air mattress. The bottom house has a king size bed in the master bedroom with a private bathroom with a shower (I think). The front bedroom has one queen size bed and one set of bunk beds. It is next to a bathroom with a walk in shower. The other bedroom has two queen size beds. The floor plans are very similar. There are large screen tv's in both houses and in the game room. There are also tv's in both master bedrooms and the "built in bed" room. The yard is enormous and twice the size of the adjacent properties. There is plenty of room to play games. The back of the property faces the west so you get the evening sun. There is a hot tub but we didn't use it. The dock is adequate and you can swim from the end of it. The lily pads are just at the shore line and not at the end of the dock. Since we stayed on Labor Day weekend, there was a lot of boat traffic but the boats do not come too close to the dock. One of the owners stopped by the first evening to check on us and was very friendly. One note: the property is a little hard to find. Our GPS led us the wrong way. The road to the house feels kind of like going down an alley. Overall this is a great place to stay and very relaxing!

A Wonderful Family Getaway

  • 5 of 5
We gathered with family for a few days here and we truely enjoyed everything about our stay! It was large and spacious with room for adults as well as children alike. It was so nice to be checked in on by the owner to make sure everything was good with the house. They are so hospitable and friendly. The house is plenty stocked with linens and dishes, The only thing we had to bring was food and bathroom toiletries. We relaxed comfortably on the deck out back and the kids and dogs had plenty of space to run in the huge back yard.At night we chilled in front of the cozy fireplace . It was awesome to have the pooltable downstairs to play while watching the game on the big screen t.v. The jacuzzi was fun for the kids to play in at night. It's not far at all from stores and the main freeway so it's easy to get to and get from, The house was neat and clean and beautifully decorated. The appliances are all new and in great condition.
We would reccommend this place to anyone and will hopefully get to come back again! Sincerely

Unbelievable

  • 5 of 5
My family and I rented the bear haus for a great family environment, and we got all that and more. The pictures do not do this house justice. There is so much space, that we didn't know what to do with. We were comfortable, which is important on vacation, but that aside, the space didn't even matter because of all the other things that they had as well. The yard was spacious, gated and perfect to tucker our pets out, along with ample space for family activities. We like to play bags and horse shoes, not to mention a little soccer and volley ball. There were plenty of bathrooms, which in our family is a MUST. We also had plenty of places to cook for our big family. All these things would be amazing, but then you add in the fact that it is water front and it becomes UNBELIEVABLE! We had tons of fun in the sun. My family and I really enjoyed our vacation and want to book again next year, or if possible this year again!

tequila makes me skinny dip in lake dunlap

  • 5 of 5
hell yea, this place was awesome. I was here in june for a friends engagement party and they rented this house for the weekend. When I first drove up, the first thing that caught my eye was the neat driveway that wrapped around a garden, it even had this cool seahorse bird bath. My girlfriend and I stayed upstairs and were blown away by all of the artistic touches that the owners have put into the house. Normally I would never talk about how great a bathroom is, but every single bathroom in this house had its own distinct and creative tiling patterns. While one had a stand-up shower with an awesome broken-tile design, another had a bath with a huge sea turtle on the wall made completely of tile...truly beautiful. Even the downstairs bathroom had a huge walk in rock shower made of large, smooth stones...I seriously thought we could fit half of the guests in there at once. I now consider myself somewhat of a bathroom officianado. Both the upstairs and downstairs have a large, spacious common area that worked great for the party atmosphere, but later as the party settled down, the space easily transitioned into a cozy, intimate space to drink and have conversation. I'm a country boy at heart so my opinion might be a bit biased, but my favorite thing about this entire house was the Recreation room. This thing had all the bells and whistles, I'm talking about huge television, pool table, dart board,a long rock bar, and of course the golden egg of this room was the keggerator filled with icy-cold beer. After having a few shots of tequila at the bar and few cold brews, I headed out to join the festivities of the party. The yard is gigantic and the houses have an amazing view of the lake from the decks. Then night came and thats when the yardlights came on and illuminated everything so that the party could keep going, and the tequila kept flowing until we took a late night dip in the lake. Overall, this house made a lasting impression on me, my girlfriend, and almost everyone that attended the engagement party. Only advice I can give is if you drink too much tequila and go swimmin, watch out for snapping turtles...just kidding one of the best nights ever. I take my hat off to the owners for creating such a beautiful place.
