Fort Davis House Rental Photos and Description
House, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)
Beautiful casita situated on the very top of Scobee Mountain overlooking Fort Davis,Texas, at 6,000 feet in altitude. Designed by a local architect famous for his quality, this elegant guest house has a roof shaped like the wings of an eagle, a back patio with breathtaking views and a deck with true 360 degree views ranging from a 30-mile north view to a 90-mile view to the south.
To the west you can see McDonald observatory and the Davis Mountains and views that go on forever. This region is where the wealthy families of Texas came to escape Summer’s heat before there was air conditioning. The house does not have air conditioning, but between the high altitude, thick adobe walls and ceiling fans, you don’t need it.
You are near Big Bend National Park and just a 30-minute drive from Marfa and Alpine, Texas, with art galleries, gift shops, restaurants and plenty of small town, Texas characters. Fort Davis offers a historic U.S. cavalry fort occupied from ___ to ____, as well as restaurants, shops and all the necessities. Nearby Davis Mountains State Park offers many hiking trails. This is a vacation home for adventurous singles or couples. Even though it overlooks Fort Davis, it takes a one-mile drive up a steep hill to reach the casita and we strongly recommend you bring a four-wheel drive for convenience and safety. But once you get there, everything is luxurious.
When you sit on the back porch you are looking out across the Davis Mountains with a 30-mile view, immense quiet except for an occasional coyote and the only evidence of man is the McDonald's observatory. (Their Star Gazing parties are fun in the Summer!)
Two friends who stopped here overnight on the way to Arizona perhaps can describe it best with their behavior. They canceled their reservations in Sedona and spent the week!
This is a high desert climate. So the air is dry, and temperatures are moderate most of the year. July usually begins monsoon season. Short, daily thunderstorms are part of the spectacular views this time of year. Winters are usually mild, although the area can rarely get an inch or two of snow in late Dec. or January.

About Randall Kinzie
I am a landscape photographer. I've done a couploe of books of photography of the Big Bend National Park.
Randall Kinzie purchased this house in 1998
Why Randall Kinzie chose Fort Davis
We fell in love with the Big Bend area of Texas in the 1970's, purchased the property in 1981 and built the home in 1998. At the time we lived in Dallas and the views here are mind-blowing plus the climate is great year-round.
What makes this house unique
Quiet that you can actually hear is one of the things we enjoy most about our Fort Davis home. It's so peaceful up there.
