LUXURY FORT DAVIS ADOBE CASITA ON THE TOP OF A MOUNTAIN

Fort Davis House Rental Photos and Description

House, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)

Beautiful casita situated on the very top of Scobee Mountain overlooking Fort Davis,Texas, at 6,000 feet in altitude. Designed by a local architect famous for his quality, this elegant guest house has a roof shaped like the wings of an eagle, a back patio with breathtaking views and a deck with true 360 degree views ranging from a 30-mile north view to a 90-mile view to the south.

To the west you can see McDonald observatory and the Davis Mountains and views that go on forever. This region is where the wealthy families of Texas came to escape Summer’s heat before there was air conditioning. The house does not have air conditioning, but between the high altitude, thick adobe walls and ceiling fans, you don’t need it.

You are near Big Bend National Park and just a 30-minute drive from Marfa and Alpine, Texas, with art galleries, gift shops, restaurants and plenty of small town, Texas characters. Fort Davis offers a historic U.S. cavalry fort occupied from ___ to ____, as well as restaurants, shops and all the necessities. Nearby Davis Mountains State Park offers many hiking trails. This is a vacation home for adventurous singles or couples. Even though it overlooks Fort Davis, it takes a one-mile drive up a steep hill to reach the casita and we strongly recommend you bring a four-wheel drive for convenience and safety. But once you get there, everything is luxurious.

When you sit on the back porch you are looking out across the Davis Mountains with a 30-mile view, immense quiet except for an occasional coyote and the only evidence of man is the McDonald's observatory. (Their Star Gazing parties are fun in the Summer!)

Two friends who stopped here overnight on the way to Arizona perhaps can describe it best with their behavior. They canceled their reservations in Sedona and spent the week!

This is a high desert climate. So the air is dry, and temperatures are moderate most of the year. July usually begins monsoon season. Short, daily thunderstorms are part of the spectacular views this time of year. Winters are usually mild, although the area can rarely get an inch or two of snow in late Dec. or January.

About Randall Kinzie

I am a landscape photographer. I've done a couploe of books of photography of the Big Bend National Park.

Randall Kinzie purchased this house in 1998

Why Randall Kinzie chose Fort Davis

We fell in love with the Big Bend area of Texas in the 1970's, purchased the property in 1981 and built the home in 1998. At the time we lived in Dallas and the views here are mind-blowing plus the climate is great year-round.

What makes this house unique

Quiet that you can actually hear is one of the things we enjoy most about our Fort Davis home. It's so peaceful up there.

Spectacular Views!

  • 5 of 5
We had a great time at this house. The design is well thought-out and open with the house sitting on top of the mountain. It's an interesting drive up the steep, single lane gravel road, so a high-clearance vehicle is definitely recommended. 4WD is a plus. Randall--the manager--was very friendly and helpful. We'll definitely be back!

Week of Peace and Quite

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I have used VRBO several times and have never been disappointed, however we have never booked a home that so exceeded our expectations. This place is awesome! We live a hectic life and we were looking for a week of peace and quite. We had such a great time spending time together here. The house is well designed, the views spectacular, the stars at night seem right on top of you. It was the perfect retreat. We took several day trips during the week; even taking a day to Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico. If you want a great get-away - this is the place.

Owner's Response: Thanks for giving us a review. We're so glad you enjoyed the place as much as we do! It's beautiful in August, during monsoon season you can see some gorgeous storms over the mountains.

Mountain top get away

  • 5 of 5
This place is fabulous! This is a place where once you are there you don't want to leave. This is perfect honeymooners casita. It is one bedroom, one bath and perfect for a couple who wants to be away from it all. For those concerned that there is no air conditioning, you will not need it. We were there the week the July 4th holiday and didn't miss it at all. The view from the deck off the house is one of a kind -- and then the stars come out. The stars are the only light visible and it is nothing less than awe inspiring. Many folks come to the area to experience the McDonald Observatory which is a short drive away. The home also has a viewing deck from the opposite end of the property - easy walk from the house. The viewing deck is the perfect location for watching sunsets or for an intimate wedding. The casita has an equipped kitchen and we made full use of it opting mainly to cook and eat in. Fort Davis does offer a number of eateries and the town is fun to stroll through. Make sure you stop in the Stone Mountain Village Deli; you will find a great select of fresh produce, gourmet
cooking items, and a friendly crowd. Alpine and Marfa are easy drives and a great opportunity to watch out for wildlife. Make sure you bring your binoculars for viewing from the house's decks. Randal K, the property manager was extremely welcoming, very knowledgable of the area, quick to respond to any questions we had. We will definitely return to relaxing, pet friendly location. If you are looking for relaxation, this is it! PS: we traveled the 14 hour drive for years to the Colorado mountains outside of Denver to escape Fort Worth's summer heat. You can get to Fort Davis in approximately 7 hours, escape the heat and dodge the Colorado Springs and Denver traffic.

Owner's Response: It was great having y'all out and so far, you're the only one to have spotted a mountain lion. I'm told by a regular guest of the Tourist Camp who tracks these cats, that there are about 30 in those mountains you see from the west porch.
