Our stay in Rome

I loved my week in Rome, it was an experience I will never forget. The apartment is huge and there is no danger that you will feel cramped. The apartment building is nice enough and is reminiscent of a pre-war era. There are a lot of things that are broken and the apartment is in need of some TLC but as a place to stay that is in a relatively good location you can't go wrong. The kitchen is very small and you will need just one designated chef! The bedrooms are reasonable but if you are in the one nearest the kitchen take ear plugs as the people of Rome are very noisy all the time. The shower and bath in the main bathroom are not great and all the drains in the apartment are slow so you end up stood in a huge puddle. You have to be prepared to do things yourself, e.g. plug the random speakers into the DVD player. Also you have to arrange for the airconditioning before hand, we didn't need it though as the apartment is very cool even in 30 degree heat.

We arrived on a Sunday and absolutely nothing is open. The trains and subway still operate but there is little else going on. We had no shopping and had to walk down to the Vatican to find something that was open. It is about a 20 minute walk to the Vatican down hill which is reasonable or alternatively the 990 bus takes you into the centre of Rome, the bus stop is opposite the apartment and the buses are very regular. There are also subway stations but make sure you take a map as all the streets are very similar in appearance.

Food is very cheap but drinks are expensive so make sure you prepare yourself. You can 'do Rome' on a budget just be sensible and don't necessarily go to the shops directly near the popular places, there are fantastic restaurants in the back streets.

Near the apartment there are the pizza shops that are worth a visit as you can get a slice for 1 Euro. There are little shopping areas all over the place, just be prepared to walk to get there.

The apartment is what it is, its certainly better than staying in a hotel but there are areas that need improving. I don't think you will find anything better for a similar price. You get what you pay for and this apartment offers space and a decent location. We had a fantastic holiday and loved Rome!

Wonderful week in Rome

Upon our arrival we were met by Marina's daughter Priscilla, who gave us the keys and a quick tour of the apartment. Later that day Marina came by to make sure we had settled in and to take care of any last minute concerns we may have had. I had heard that Rome is full of beautiful women and after meeting Marina and Priscilla I couldn't wait to start exploring.
It was easy to get around. One could either catch the bus across the street to get to the city center, or walk down to the Cipro metro stop, which is about a 10 minute walk. A little more coming back as it's a slight grade uphill. Once we were comfortable with the transportation, getting around was a breeze.
The apartment is in a quiet residential area with Pizza and Pasta restaurants within a block or two. A nice take-out deli with lots of prepared entrees and wine to go, and a Gelateria just down the street. Lots of cafes for breakfast and lunch nearby. We also took advantage of a couple grocery stores and made a couple meals in the apartment. The nicest grocery store was behind a school down by the Cipro metro station. If you want the fancy 4 and 5 star restaurants you'd best dine in downtown Rome.
The apartment itself is large, with an amazingly large terrace where we spent all our nights sipping wine and recounting the days events.
We had no problems with nothing working and if something was not functioning properly it was of little or no consequence. Wifi worked great and did find a couple english speaking channels on the t.v.
Clothes washer came in handy but had to hang dry outside. We always had hot water for showers. The refridgerator is large and the gas top burners worked very well.
The people in the neighborhood and the cafes were very charming and with an obvious language barrier we all managed to figure each other out.
I would definately stay here again and will recommend this property to friends. We were very surprised to see how little we spent on meals and wine in the area. I was warned about the high cost of everything in Rome but found it to be just the opposite. I'm sure you could spend a bundle if you wanted to stay downtown.
Thanks again Marina for the wonderful stay, and for having a couple tall Morettis in the fridge for our arrival.
Ciao,
Rick

Good but can easily be improved!

In general the apartment is very elegant, spacious and pleasant. The balcony is wonderful and we used it every day for eating and relaxing outside. The kitchen was well equipped and on the whole our stay was comfortable.

However, there were a few things which were not working as they should and should have been fixed beforehand. If you mention a Jacuzzi bath in your site, then it should work properly! In fact, it worked very poorly; the water current was very weak. The water hose in the Jacuzzi was also too short and made the experience of taking a simple shower as a substitute (since the Jacuzzi was performing so poorly) very bizarre: You have to take a shower sitting down in the tub. We are grown-ups, all of us over 60 years of age.
The other bathroom: In the shower, once you are inside the cubicle, there is no place to put the soap and the sponge (or whatever you are using) – you must bend down to the floor.
The living room: The sofa was very uncomfortable!
You did say there was a problem with electricity and warned us against using many appliances simultaneously. But other than that we found that many of the electric sockets did not work. Some of the electricity switches were non-existent (although we could see them hiding deep inside the sockets). Our bedroom was therefore very dark - the ceiling light did not work, one bedside lamp did not work, and the other one had a dark lampshade. Reading in bed was impossible.
It was also not very pleasant to use a single set of towels per person for 7 days. I am sure that if asked beforehand, we would be willing to pay for a change of towels.
We also could have enjoyed a more thorough explanation (even in writing) for the use of the public transportation, other that the one given quickly upon our arrival, and avoid making all the possible mistakes during the first days. We haven't seen the owners, who did seem very nice people, except for the time of our arrival which was at 4:00 in the morning.
Never-the-less, the location was good, the neighborhood very pleasant with restaurants and cafes and shops, and we had a great time - but it could have been OUTSTANDING!
