UNIQUE EUROPEAN-STYLE ART BARN NEAR TELLURIDE, COLORADO

Ridgway House Rental Photos and Description

House, 1 Bedroom + 2nd Bedroom Loft, 2.5 Baths, (Sleeps 4-6)

Enjoy the Wild West minus the wild: The Art Barn is the impeccable combination of the western spirit and modern luxury.

With a contemporary kitchen, wireless internet, two and a half bathrooms, floor heating, two fireplaces and two bedrooms (1 is a loft) you can feel like a cowboy, minus the chafing.

The Art Barn is solitude in its purest form, as well as a truly stunning and unique property nestled on San Juan Mesa, Colorado, surrounded by the LaSalle Mountains. Minimalist, with clean lines, light wood and floor-to-ceiling windows, it is the perfect blend of western cool and modern aestheticism. About 40 minutes from Telluride and 25 minutes from Ridgway, the Art Barn is the ideal place to get away from it all and enjoy nature. Inviting decks let you see as far as Utah, and overlook a sloping meadow that alternates between glittering snow, colorful summer wildflowers and striking fall hues of gold and orange.

A true, tranquil paradise, elk and deer roam by in herds, the quiet nearly complete—the grass really is greener here. All this, along with a state of the art 1000-square-foot, fully equipped artists studio make it the ultimate getaway for writers, artists, musicians or anyone who just wants to relax. The studio was designed with artists and sculptors in mind—its floor-to-ceiling doors can be opened fully to move large objects—but it can easily be transformed into additional bedrooms.

However, should the mood strike, visit the beautiful old mining town of Telluride for award-winning dining, upscale shops and boutiques, as well as a huge array of spas and health services.

If it's adventure you seek, there's no shortage of options nearby. From hiking and biking to skiing, heli-skiing and whitewater rafting, there's no adrenaline rush you won't get here.

I was originally born in Austria and have lived in Vienna, New York, Paris and Munich over the years. I am an independent gallerist and an art dealer, hence you will find a lot of contemporary art in and around the Art Barn. Having traveled the world, the furniture is a wonderfully eclectic mix collected from all continents and cultures. My family and I have a home nearby. We try to split our time equally between living in the USA and Europe.

Lisa purchased this house in 2006

We built this home with a well-known Austrian architect. The Barn is both utterly luxurious with top-of-the-line amenities, as well as totally eclectic, full of contemporary art and with furniture from all over the world. It is also completely private—you won't see anything but herds of elk and deer.

Having grown up near the Alps, we still prefer the rugged and limitless freedom of the Rocky Mountains, and the Barn perfectly showcases this ruggendess, and is built to highlight and blend in with the surrounding nature. The view is completely one-of-a-kind, and the sunsets are second to none.

Peace, solitude, nature, luxury of space and complete and utter privacy. There's also a fully equipped artist's studio.

Spectacular, Spiritual; Serene Solitude

At the Art Barn we disconnected from the daily barrage of the world's ideas of what's important and tuned into the rhythms of nature. We switched off TV and internet. (The complete incompetence of Dish Network made that easy.) The sun, the sky and roaming herds of deer and elk were our time clock and told us all we needed to know.
Stunning scenes unfolded before our eyes outside the huge windows. Mountain storms and clouds swept up from the valley and over us. Distant displays of lightning and storms were our entertainment our first night of our ten-day stay, and each day brought new reminders of the incredible power and beauty of the ever-changing high alpine weather.
The cabin was all we could have hoped for and more. Lisa, the owner, was very helpful and accommodating. Her local representative, Jorge, checked with us a couple of times during our stay to see if we needed anything or had any concerns. We had none - no problems with directions, smells or light switches!
It was truly a unique and wonderful experience. The modern design might not suit everyone (that's what photos are for) but we certainly enjoyed it and appreciated the incredible quality of cabin's construction. (You could slide open the massive glass doors with one finger!) And the master bath shower... wow!
We loved it all. The only bad thing was we had to leave and come home.

Stunning and secluded mountain getaway with spectacular views!

This property is an absolutely beautiful mountain paradise with stunning views in every direction. It is highlighted by floor to ceiling windows almost 360 degrees...including the steam room/shower! Because it is so secluded you are able to view elk, deer and lots of other wildlife roaming across the meadow throughout the day. There is a large patio where you can lay out and view the night sky. If you are from the city...you have never seen skies so spectacular. The property itself has all the amenities you would desire. Heated floors, fireplaces, vaulted ceilings, lofts, modern appliances, comfortable down bedding etc. There is a breezeway with an artist studio on the non-living side. It has a large "garage type door" that opens up to make it an indoor/outdoor area. We absolutely loved our stay. The owner went out of her way to be a good hostess to us as well.

Awesome Views!!

My husband and i stayed at the Art Barn the week of labor day, it is a beautiful place in the most serene setting!! As the owner states, it is not for those who want to see people, this is nature at its finest. The owner, Lisa, although in Europe when we were there, was very easy to contact via email, she always answered promptly to any questions we had, also there was a grounds keeper local, Jorge, very helpful. One morning my husband lost track at over 100 Elk roaming through the area, the mule deer were everwhere, and the most beautiful sunsets you will ever see. We took our atv and Lisa, the owner let us know about all the cool places to ride around the barn, also she offered anything we might need from her house (a short walk away) which we took her up on since we forgot our binoculars. Basically everything you need to cook in the kitchen, all high end applicances, it was nice to cook breakfast every morning, and easy to clean up, dishwaser and all. The steam shower saved us, what a blast! Also a nice stack w/d very handy. Only down falls: we have att cell service and did not get any service at the house, however you could walk up the hill or drive around and get it. Also when we were there they were having trouble with Dish, so no internet. (Lisa did offer her house for use of internet). There is one tv in the bedroom that had 2 channels for the first 3-4 days, and after that nothing, however Dish was coming the day we left, so may not be an issue now. All in all, great stay, close enough to Ridgeway, Ouray, and even Telluride. As a matter of fact, we have recommended it and a friend of our may be going this week!

BE FOREWARNED….

This place is isolated – 25 miles to the nearest store, gas station or restaurant. Do not plan on arriving after dark as the last 7miles are on dirt roads not well marked. In our case we had some trouble finding the place because the owner’s directions were off in several key respects.

Contrary to what is advertised, the house has only one bedroom and a loft with a bed and a futon mattress on the floor. The ladder to the loft is so steep it would be dangerous for small children or anyone elderly or infirm.

The evening we arrived we found that the house had no heat or hot water, no cell phone coverage on our Verizon phones, no WI FI, no internet connection, no electricity in the bedroom, no hand soap, no dish soap, no microwave and no spare toilet paper. The owner, who lives about 5 minutes away, was unapologetic and unsympathetic. She did give us two bars of hand soap and two rolls of toilet paper. As for the liquid dish soap she held up a plastic bottle with an inch or two of soap in the bottom and said, “I could give you this, but then I wouldn’t have any for myself.”

The day after we arrived a friend of the owner helped us get the hot water and heating system turned on, but he couldn’t figure out how to make the lights in the bedroom work or how to get WI FI or an internet connection. Two days later an electrician solved the lighting problem but even he had no idea how to connect the router or get a WI FI signal. When we spoke to the owner again about the lack of internet connection the best she could do was to say, “It used to work,” and tell us that Dish Network had assured her that we were “getting a strong signal.” Over the week we were there we never did get any internet service.

To give it its due, the scenery is magnificent and the house is modern, attractive, situated beautifully and has great views. There are a few odd quirks: many wall switches to many overhead lights, all arranged in a system that is not self-evident. Aside from the master bath, there are no soap dishes or towel racks or wall hooks in the other bathrooms. And despite the owner’s assurances that it would go away after a day or two, there was occasionally a noticeably unpleasant smell (suspiciously like sewage) in both halves of the house, strongest in the attached studio.

Owner's Response: Of course the ArtBarn is isolated—that’s exactly what it is advertised as and exactly what people that rent it are looking for: solitude. Remote or not, we’ve been using the same directions to the house since it was built six years ago. Family, friends, guests and workers have never once had trouble finding it. And I always advise visitors not to arrive after dark.

As for the second bedroom being a loft, it says that in the listing as well as on the images.

These particular guests seem to believe that renting a house is synonymous with staying at a hotel, which it’s not. Of course the basics were provided—they had both soap and toilet paper but seemingly not in the unusually vast quantity demanded by four people staying for a week. Basics aside, guests renting homes are expected to provide the rest for themselves (unless they expect me to stock the fridge as well?). Plus, again seeming to think there was daily turndown service, these guests left the house a complete mess, with dirty dishes strewn across the kitchen despite there being a dishwasher.

As for the electricity and wifi, that truly is regrettable. Like many mountain homes in the wilderness, the power can be temperamental. I regret not having detected this prior to their arrival (I live in Europe and our caretaker was on vacation) but I had an electrician there the very next day.
