Valley View Cottage has been carefully restored to retain an atmosphere of the original stone cottage, while adding comfort and warmth. Spacious bed-sitting room with balcony has magnificent panoramic views of old village with a background of heather-covered hills and olive groves. Dining room and charming separate bedroom have original fireplaces. Bedroom windows open to views of hills and pretty garden. Newly built well-equipped kitchen and bathroom. Outdoor dining arbour in cottage garden. Ideal self-catering rental for those who wish to enjoy a taste of Greek village life as well as sun and sea.
Valley View Cottage is wonderful, even better than it looks in the pictures. The cottage is down steps from the street and the bedroom balcony has an uninterrupted view of the valley. The view from the balcony is beautiful and at night I have never seen so many stars, quite breathtaking! The cottage was spotless and Annie had put fresh flowers in every room. Annie was really welcoming and helpful and easy to contact if we needed anything.
The village is interesting to walk around, with a good track down the valley and we loved watching the birds and butterflies. The bakery, local shop and tavernas had everything we needed and everyone was really helpful and friendly.
I couldn't get the internet on my iPad as the connection is plug-in but the tavernas have Wi-Fi so that was OK.
The local beach (a car ride away) is lovely with warm, clear water and it isn't busy but all the beaches are sunny all day with little or no natural shade so you need a sunshade.
I would recommend Valley View Cottage without hesitation, we loved it and have very happy memories!
I was looking for a quiet 15-day holiday in genuine Greek surroundings and I feel blessed for having found Valley View Cottage in Evia! This house felt like home from the first moment...and the genuine warm welcome from Annie and the locals in the village of Zarakes truly made my holiday dream come true!
The cottage is carefully renovated and decorated with love and it certainly feels like you've been welcomed to someone's home. The garden and the views are beautiful and the cottage is even cozier than what photos can show you.
The island of Evia was exactly what I was looking for: genuine and very Greek. You do need a car to get around and the island is absolutely worth exploring as the north is very different from the south and you can enjoy various sceneries with sea, mountains, forests, villages...and numerous beaches to all tastes!!
I would absolutely recommend Evia and Valley View Cottage to everyone looking for authentic Greece, a home with everything you need for quiet holidays with welcoming villagers and lots to explore on the island. And do not forget this is very close to Athens if you wish to combine city life to your holidays in Greece!
I look forward to returning to Valley View Cottage one day...
It was a great discovery the Island Evia. Everywhere you can see the sea and it is still very quiet here.
If you want to be part of the community, meet people go to Valley View Cottage.
One side of the house is quiet with spectacular views. From the other side you are part of a small village with everything you need.
In the evening everyone is outside and just 100 mtrs from the house there is the local taverna.
After one day people know you and you feel welcome. A great way to know the Greek people better than all the other news you here or read these days.
In daytime go to the small beaches without any foreign tourists. Just among the Greek's.

We would like to say thank you that we could spend our holiday in a such beautiful place. Valley View Cottage in Zarakes is a cute cottage in a traditional style, furnished very comfortable, with great garden, where you can spend your breakfast. Bedrooms are situated on the east, so we could watch the sun-rise. If you are looking for the place where you can spend peaceful holiday with your family is a village Zarakes and island Evia the right decision.

We, a Danish family of four with children age 3 and 5, spend a week in this lovely stone house in the summer 2014. The house is absolutely gorgious! Tasteful decorated and well equiped - we all feld like home from the first minute. The balcony and two terasses provide shade all day. The village is nothing special when it comes to architecture but the people are amazingly warm and welcoming. One night at the nearby taverna an old lady gave us homegrown cucumbers, the husband of the owner of the taverna gave us fresh milked sheep milk, egss and tomatoes from their own production. Elenis food (the nearby taverna, 50 m from the house) is excellent. We either had dinner at the taverne or in our 'own' garden. During the day we visited the local beaches. Limnionas and Armiriki were our favourites (20 min drive through beautiful landscapes), but also Zarakon beach is lovely. The water is crystal clear and they all have several tavernas although none of the the beaches are busy. Like everywhere in Evia the only language we heard spoken was greek. We had a great holiday and would reckomend the house warmely to anyone who would like to experience authentic rural live in Evia, Greece.
The village of Zarka (officially Zarakes) is 2 1/2 hours from Athens airport. It is an authentic working village with tavernas and cafes and a well-stocked shop. There is also a butcher and bakery, right on the doorstep. It is well situated for walking and exploring. and close to spectacular beaches. All nearby beaches have tavernas with fresh fish a speciality. Zarka beach is 5 km away and the magnificent Limnionas 16 1/2. Aliverion ( 20 kms away) is the nearest market town where a lively street market is held every Saturday. Nea Styra, also 20 km away, is the nearest port where a variety of waterfront cafes and tavernas give ample opportunity to people watch.
Karystos , the main port town of Southern Evia is a magnificent 1 hour and 15 Min drive from Zarka. Here there is much of historic interest, including Roman columns, a Venetian castle and an attractive museum.
