Be among the first to rent our stunning holiday home, a modern architecturally designed Mediterranean style villa nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Madres. It is a peaceful & secure oasis from city life, offering clean fresh air in a garden setting with luxury amenities.
Our house is located in a peaceful village called Santo Domingo Barrio Alto about 25 minutes by car or 30 minutes by collective taxi from downtown Oaxaca. We offer a quiet environment from which to explore the city and surrounding villages. Perfect for writers, artists, hikers, bird lovers, dreamers, or just those looking for a semi-rural environment.
Rare features for Oaxacan rentals include a gourmet cook’s kitchen. Stainless steel appliances include a six burner gas stove, double door refrigerator with purified cold water and icemaker, and automatic dishwasher. Juice extractor and electric blenders let you enjoy the wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables that are available nearby. Coffee grinders for both the drip coffee maker and the espresso maker will allow you to make full use of the excellent organic coffee grown regionally. Quality pots and pans, dishes and utensils can be found in the many new kitchen cupboards. Granite countertops, large under counter stainless steel sink, island with stools and purified water throughout the house make this a very useable kitchen.
The entry level offers a convenient 2 piece bath and an office which looks out on a beautiful flowering garden. The office has the necessary supplies one might need, a laser printer and wide band internet access. We supply a laptop and cell phone. We do not have WIFI throughout the house but our internet is reliable from the office. It does not have SKYPE capabilities. From the entry level, one can look down and see a large gallery space with a small but growing art collection.
The open concept, light filled main floor includes a dining room with a large custom built mesquite table and wide French doors opening directly onto a furnished patio. The spacious living room is bathed in light from the floor to ceiling sliding glass windows offering a great view of San Agustin and the ‘CASA’ art centre in Vista Hermosa. The comfortable custom built furniture and wide screen TV are rarities in Oaxaca.
The second level master suite features include a new king bed with pillow-top mattress, walk-in dressing room, built-in cupboards, and an ensuite bathroom with a large walk-in shower. The walk-in dressing room also includes a secure digitally operated safety deposit box. Huge sliding windows allow the resident to take full pleasure from the incredible views and the warm breezes in the valley.
The upper level houses 2 brightly lit guest rooms, one with twins and one with a queen. Both are furnished with new pillow top mattresses, quality sheets, pillows and covers. These share a modern bathroom with walk-in shower.
All bedrooms feature name brand mattresses, quality high thread count cotton sheets and duvets and hand woven, locally crafted wool carpets. Hot water is supplied by an large, double burner, on-demand water heater that is easily capable of supplying very hot pressurized water to both showers operating at the same time.
Enjoy outdoor dining on our comfortable patio furniture next to the flowering aromatic garden and again those fabulous views.
A walk up the street takes you to a beautiful swimming complex with Tuscan valley views. The complex includes 5 pools, slides for the adventurous and poolside service from the licensed restaurant.
Further up the street brings you to the fabulous CASA, (Centre de Arte de San Agustin) offering international art exhibits, weekly films, and an art library open to the public. The site is the location of a turn-of-the-century textile factory that has been the ongoing project of internationally known Oaxacan artist, Francisco Toledo. The architectural design takes full advantage of the original construction, the abundance of flowing water, indigenous floral displays and fabulous views of the valley. Not to be missed. Next to the Centre is a renovated artisanal paper factory. The countryside views are reminiscent of the hills of Tuscany with lots of lush landscaping, perfect for hiking and biking.
Also outside our door is the moto taxi stand where a covered, 3 wheel, 2 seat passenger taxi will take you where you want to go in the community of Etla including the local market and grocery store, five minutes away. There are several family type restaurants nearby which are open for comida (late lunch).
We have hired local staff to assist you with your stay. Rocio Landa is our dynamic house manager, fluent in both English and Spanish. She will arrange tours with driver pickup from the house to such attractions as the Monte Alban & Mitla archeological sites, and to the many craft villages in the area. She will also be able to answer any questions you might have. Our housekeeper, Alexandra, does the laundry and keeps the house clean for the guests. Damian, our outdoor custodian tends the garden and keeps vigil at night.
After over ten years of traveling all areas of Mexico, we chose this location and outfitted our house with out future retirement in mind. In the meantime, we are happy to share it with others. We love the serenity and clean air of our friendly village coupled with the proximity to a vibrant, culturally rich city, offering: museums; art galleries; language schools; an English language library; world class restaurants; pedestrian-only streets; organic markets; and of course the fabulous open air Zocolo, filled with sound and colour and ringed with outdoor cafes. The internationally attended Guelaguetza celebrations occur on the two Mondays following July 16th. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guelaguetza). Many events in Oaxaca are scheduled during July to coincide with these celebrations.

About June Johnston
We have travelled extensively in Mexico to purchase arts and crafts for our mexican store, Casa Lucia, in Canada. We have come to love the people with their patient helpful ways. There is always something interesting to look at in Mexico.
June Johnston purchased this house in 2007
Why June Johnston chose Oaxaca
We chose this location because it offers a friendly authentic mexican village just outside of a major colonial city. The weather in Oaxaca is known to be near perfect, cool evenings combined with warm days.
What makes this house unique
We love the clean air, the peaceful quiet evenings with a margarita on our patio, especially after a busy day in the city.
