CHAMONIX VALLEY CHALET IN QUIET LOCATION WITH SUNNY GARDEN AND OPEN VIEWS

Les Houches Chalet Rental Photos and Description

Excellent value self-catering chalet with veranda, private garden and parking

Chalet Pic Rouge is a traditional Alpine chalet-style rental in a quiet and scenic site at the foot of Mt. Blanc in the Chamonix Valley. Located in Les Houches, the chalet is just an hour's drive from Geneva Airport, 3 minutes walk from the beginners' ski lifts and 1.2 km from Bellevue cable car.

The tastefully decorated character chalet is 150m from shops and restaurants. It is the end chalet in a terrace of 4 adjoining properties with private drive and parking. It is away from the main road in a peaceful residential area, where local families live year round. It offers a traditional Savoyarde atmosphere with access to 5 top ski areas in winter and hundreds of hiking & biking trails in summer.

THE CHALET

The property is compact but well-equipped and having two bathrooms is a bonus. The chalet can accommodate up to 7 guests but in winter 5 or 6 are a more comfortable number. In summer the veranda offers extra outdoor dining and seating space.

There is one double en-suite bedroom on the ground floor with a 'clic-clac' chair that coverts to a single mattress in case you want to use this bedroom as a twin. There is one twin bedded room (+ folding bed) upstairs in the loft under the eaves and 2 single beds on the mezzanine. There are no bunk beds but please note the loft ceiling height is a maximum 166 cm (5ft 4ins) so adults need to stoop upstairs. Children love the upstairs and have their own play space and DVD player up there. Access to the upper floor is by a spiral staircase and the mezzanine sleeping area has a balcony open to the lounge. The chalet has 2 bathrooms (one with shower and one with small bath), a new kitchen and a lounge/dining room opening to a private south and west-facing garden. The house is generously equipped with dishwasher, washing machine, flat-screen TV (Bluray /dvd only), free wifi and ipod stereo.

The enclosed and gated garden has fruit trees and shrubs, flower beds and tubs and is mostly laid to gravel. There is outdoor seating and dining and in summer the chalet gets sun during the morning, afternoon and evening. The timber-decked veranda gets morning sun and fabulous sunset mountain views and there is a seating area at the front of the house to enjoy the evening sun.

WHO STAYS AT CHALET PIC ROUGE?

The chalet is perfect for couples, families and small groups of friends who want to be independent and enjoy the benefits of private parking, veranda and garden, as well as proximity to ski slopes, shops and other local amenities. A car is useful, especially for families with young children, but not essential as all guests have free use of the Chamonix Valley buses and trains and door to door transfers from Geneva Airport are easily arranged.

Les Houches is an attractive town with some characterful traditional architecture and has two well-stocked supermarkets (10 minutes walk away) bakeries, bank, post office, tourist office, newsagent, chemist, cycle shop and launderette and there are numerous ski and snowboard shops and rental outlets - the nearest is 150 m from the chalet. There are bars and restaurants but for more variety head for Chamonix's night life - an evening bus runs in the winter high season.

THE SKIING

The Chamonix Valley offers a phenomenal amount of skiing and snowboarding for all levels from beginner to advanced. Les Houches has 60 km of pistes rising to 1969 m, and is especially appreciated for its long tree-lined runs, snowpark and World Cup black run, La Verte. The Le Tourchet beginners' slopes are 3 minutes walk from the chalet (open high season only) while the Bellevue cable car is 1.2 km, but easily accessed on the free ski bus, which stops at the bottom of the Le Tourchet lift. The Prairon gondola is a little further on, while the Brevent and Aiguille du Midi cable cars are a 10-15 minute drive or bus ride away. Beyond Chamonix, the Flegere and La Balme domains offer fabulously scenic above the tree-line runs, while the Grands Montets is a high-altitude snow-haven where off-piste legends are made. But there again you could always head for Les Contamines, Megeve, Verbier and even through the tunnel to Courmayeur in Italy. A ski hire shop is a 5 minute walk from the chalet.

SUMMER HOLIDAYS

Exploring, hiking, mountaineering and family activities. With a top location at the foot of the Alps' highest mountain massif, Les Houches is a magnet for alpinists and walkers as well as those content to gaze up at the shimmering glaciers and jagged peaks. Many trails start from the village itself but by hopping on the free bus or train, you have access to all the amazing hiking terrain of the Chamonix Valley and beyond. With its panoramic views of Mt. Blanc, the Grand Balcon Sud is a favourite. From June to September, (the Aiguille du Midi cable car and Montenvers train run most of the year) the ski lifts can whisk you up to 2000 metres in a matter of minutes, from where you can contour around the flank of the mountains to get the best of the views with minimum effort! Mountain bikers have plenty of choice of route and the chalet offers the convenience of a large veranda for parking bikes undercover. With its sunny garden, great views and veranda with hammock and easy chairs, Chalet Pic Rouge is perfect for relaxing but there are plenty of family activities on offer too.

I studied Spanish at university in Scotland and then lived for several years in Italy and Iceland before settling in Cumbria in the north of England. My work in the travel industry as a freelance writer and wildlife guide takes me to many amazing places but for scenery I still think the Alps are hard to beat. I come out to stay in the chalet four times a year, sometimes to ski and hike with friends and family but also on my own to just enjoy being there. There's something about big snowy mountains that I've always found irresistible. Even doing the routine jobs - cutting the hedge, varnishing the windows and scrubbing the decking down - become a pleasure when you've got those views all around you. My caretaker lives nearby and gets the chalet ready for my guests' arrival. I love the fact that my guests have come from all over the world - not only Britain, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Romania and Switzerland, but South Africa, India, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Canada, Brazil and the USA!

Cathy Harlow purchased this chalet in 2008

I've always had a passion for mountains, wild places and big views. When I started looking for a place in the French Alps I wanted easy access from the UK and to be close to different skiing and hiking areas. The Chamonix Valley offered both, and you've got Italy and Switzerland on the doorstep too. This little chalet was the first and only place I looked at - I fell in love with it, bought it and that was that! Four years and a lot of hard work down the line I know it was the right decision. Throughout my renovations to the chalet I've tried to retain its character and charm but updated the kitchen, bathroom and furnishings to make them more practical. I love the house, the garden and the views and I always feel happy there. I also like the Chamonix Valley - it's cosmopolitan and buzzing, yet very French and Savoyard.

It's the open sunny aspect and the great views in all directions, especially looking up at Mt Blanc. In summer I get so much pleasure from sitting in the hammock on the veranda at sunset watching the peaks glow gold, orange, red and finally pink. In winter I love the early morning stroll past the pine trees to the bakery, my feet kicking up the fluffy powder of last night's snowfall.

Thank you for a fabulous stay at your beautiful chalet. We can honestly say, it was the best equipped chalet we have ever stayed in, you have thought of everything one could need. The kitchen cupboards were well kitted out with lovely cutlery, cups, dishes for every dish you can think of to make, a raclette machine and even a fondu.
The space outside was brilliant for relaxing in the sun or sitting or lying down in the hammock on the veranda in the shade. Our very big dog enjoyed this too with the exception of the hammock! The BBQ was useful too.
We particularly enjoyed being in a residential area as opposed to a tourist area and all facilities i.e supermarket, post office and pharmacy are within walking distance. The description of the property and it's facilities, layout and location was accurate.
Cathy made the booking process very easy and was always in contact quickly.
We would recommend this chalet without hesitation to our friends.

Stayed in this Chalet in March 2013. The chalet is slightly up a hill; by the nursery slopes in Les Houches with awesome views from every window.

The chalet with very well equipped with everything you might need including DVD, flat screen TV, wifi, sound system, kitchen with all cooking utensils. The downstairs has a kitchen; dining room/lounge; double bedroom with ensuite shower room. Upstairs is a mezzanine with 2 beds and another twin room and bathroom with small bath. The whole of the upstairs has a sloping roof so adults cannot stand up fully; however this was made very clear at the beginning and the excellent price of the chalet reflects that. We did not find the sloping roof any issue at all and we were 4 adults.

The lady who owns this chalet is very easy to deal with and sends excellent instructions of what you need to do when you get there.

Overall, I would highly recommend this chalet & will definitely look to rent it again when I'm next in the area.

This Chalet was perfect for what my partner and I needed. it's right at the foot of the mountains so the view was amazing. it's in a quiet little villlage, giving you a real feel of a small town in france. the chalet was quite small but perfect for a couple or couple with small children. Cathy the owner was very helpful and easy to deal with.
Owner's Response: Great to hear that you enjoyed the spectacular mountain views from the chalet - in October the weather is often sunny and stable and a great time of year to explore the area. Autumn is a quiet time in the Chamonix Valley but perfect for those who want to avoid the crowds.

Chalet in Les Houches

My boyfriend and I stayed in Chalet Pic Rouge in the last week in May and found it was the perfect base for a walking holiday in the Alps. The chalet was clean, tidy and well equipped, and had a lovely garden that catches the sun pretty much all day (handy for days when we wanted a rest from hiking).

There are plenty of walks in the area to suit all levels and the public transport in the valley meant we got around fine without a car. The chalet is about 10 minutes walk from a supermarket and in a peaceful part of the Les Houches, not too near the main roads.

The booking process was all very efficient and straightforward. I would recommend this chalet to anyone who wants to explore the Chamonix valley and be based in a quiet, village location.

A cozy, quiet, and well appointed chalet! Easy access to everything the valley has to offer. A perfect place to enjoy a family retreat! Our boys aged 8 and 5 loved the loft area and playing outside in the snowy yard.
Owner's Response: Thanks for taking the time to post a review. It's great to hear that Christmas at Chalet Pic Rouge was enjoyable. The chalet is ideal for families and the garden space is great for kids both in summer and winter. Now that the chalet drive entrance is fully gated, the outdoor space is even more private and secure.

The Mont Blanc region and Chamonix Valley offer fantastic and varied skiing in winter. Just 10 minutes drive from Chamonix, Les Houches is a resort in its own right with snowpark, 60 km of pistes and is host to the World Cup on the famous Kandahar run. Four other ski areas are less than 30 minutes drive away and linked by free ski bus to Les Houches. The ski bus stop is 150m from the chalet. Les Houches has 2 supermarkets plus an organic food shop, restaurants, bars, bakery, tourist information office and a bank. Summer offers wonderful hiking and mountain biking, including the Tour de Mont Blanc and GR5 trekking routes. The Mer de Glace and other Chamonix glaciers are a huge attraction, as are the numerous stunning Alpine lakes. The Aiguilles Rouges Nature Reserve protects a varied fauna and ibex, chamois, golden eagle and lammergeier can be readily observed there. Italy (via Mont Blanc tunnel) and Switzerland are a short drive away. On the doorstep, Chamonix town is famous for its lively bars, gourmet restaurants, Alpine museum and excellent shopping.

Other Activities: Husky sledging, Alpine wildlife park, donkey trekking, river rafting, scenic train rides, glacier views, golf, high ropes, climbing wall
