Les Houches Chalet Rental Photos and Description
Excellent value self-catering chalet with veranda, private garden and parking
Chalet Pic Rouge is a traditional Alpine chalet-style rental in a quiet and scenic site at the foot of Mt. Blanc in the Chamonix Valley. Located in Les Houches, the chalet is just an hour's drive from Geneva Airport, 3 minutes walk from the beginners' ski lifts and 1.2 km from Bellevue cable car.
The tastefully decorated character chalet is 150m from shops and restaurants. It is the end chalet in a terrace of 4 adjoining properties with private drive and parking. It is away from the main road in a peaceful residential area, where local families live year round. It offers a traditional Savoyarde atmosphere with access to 5 top ski areas in winter and hundreds of hiking & biking trails in summer.
The property is compact but well-equipped and having two bathrooms is a bonus. The chalet can accommodate up to 7 guests but in winter 5 or 6 are a more comfortable number. In summer the veranda offers extra outdoor dining and seating space.
There is one double en-suite bedroom on the ground floor with a 'clic-clac' chair that coverts to a single mattress in case you want to use this bedroom as a twin. There is one twin bedded room (+ folding bed) upstairs in the loft under the eaves and 2 single beds on the mezzanine. There are no bunk beds but please note the loft ceiling height is a maximum 166 cm (5ft 4ins) so adults need to stoop upstairs. Children love the upstairs and have their own play space and DVD player up there. Access to the upper floor is by a spiral staircase and the mezzanine sleeping area has a balcony open to the lounge. The chalet has 2 bathrooms (one with shower and one with small bath), a new kitchen and a lounge/dining room opening to a private south and west-facing garden. The house is generously equipped with dishwasher, washing machine, flat-screen TV (Bluray /dvd only), free wifi and ipod stereo.
The enclosed and gated garden has fruit trees and shrubs, flower beds and tubs and is mostly laid to gravel. There is outdoor seating and dining and in summer the chalet gets sun during the morning, afternoon and evening. The timber-decked veranda gets morning sun and fabulous sunset mountain views and there is a seating area at the front of the house to enjoy the evening sun.
WHO STAYS AT CHALET PIC ROUGE?
The chalet is perfect for couples, families and small groups of friends who want to be independent and enjoy the benefits of private parking, veranda and garden, as well as proximity to ski slopes, shops and other local amenities. A car is useful, especially for families with young children, but not essential as all guests have free use of the Chamonix Valley buses and trains and door to door transfers from Geneva Airport are easily arranged.
Les Houches is an attractive town with some characterful traditional architecture and has two well-stocked supermarkets (10 minutes walk away) bakeries, bank, post office, tourist office, newsagent, chemist, cycle shop and launderette and there are numerous ski and snowboard shops and rental outlets - the nearest is 150 m from the chalet. There are bars and restaurants but for more variety head for Chamonix's night life - an evening bus runs in the winter high season.
The Chamonix Valley offers a phenomenal amount of skiing and snowboarding for all levels from beginner to advanced. Les Houches has 60 km of pistes rising to 1969 m, and is especially appreciated for its long tree-lined runs, snowpark and World Cup black run, La Verte. The Le Tourchet beginners' slopes are 3 minutes walk from the chalet (open high season only) while the Bellevue cable car is 1.2 km, but easily accessed on the free ski bus, which stops at the bottom of the Le Tourchet lift. The Prairon gondola is a little further on, while the Brevent and Aiguille du Midi cable cars are a 10-15 minute drive or bus ride away. Beyond Chamonix, the Flegere and La Balme domains offer fabulously scenic above the tree-line runs, while the Grands Montets is a high-altitude snow-haven where off-piste legends are made. But there again you could always head for Les Contamines, Megeve, Verbier and even through the tunnel to Courmayeur in Italy. A ski hire shop is a 5 minute walk from the chalet.
Exploring, hiking, mountaineering and family activities. With a top location at the foot of the Alps' highest mountain massif, Les Houches is a magnet for alpinists and walkers as well as those content to gaze up at the shimmering glaciers and jagged peaks. Many trails start from the village itself but by hopping on the free bus or train, you have access to all the amazing hiking terrain of the Chamonix Valley and beyond. With its panoramic views of Mt. Blanc, the Grand Balcon Sud is a favourite. From June to September, (the Aiguille du Midi cable car and Montenvers train run most of the year) the ski lifts can whisk you up to 2000 metres in a matter of minutes, from where you can contour around the flank of the mountains to get the best of the views with minimum effort! Mountain bikers have plenty of choice of route and the chalet offers the convenience of a large veranda for parking bikes undercover. With its sunny garden, great views and veranda with hammock and easy chairs, Chalet Pic Rouge is perfect for relaxing but there are plenty of family activities on offer too.

About Cathy Harlow
I studied Spanish at university in Scotland and then lived for several years in Italy and Iceland before settling in Cumbria in the north of England. My work in the travel industry as a freelance writer and wildlife guide takes me to many amazing places but for scenery I still think the Alps are hard to beat. I come out to stay in the chalet four times a year, sometimes to ski and hike with friends and family but also on my own to just enjoy being there. There's something about big snowy mountains that I've always found irresistible. Even doing the routine jobs - cutting the hedge, varnishing the windows and scrubbing the decking down - become a pleasure when you've got those views all around you. My caretaker lives nearby and gets the chalet ready for my guests' arrival. I love the fact that my guests have come from all over the world - not only Britain, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Romania and Switzerland, but South Africa, India, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Canada, Brazil and the USA!

Why Cathy Harlow chose Les Houches
I've always had a passion for mountains, wild places and big views. When I started looking for a place in the French Alps I wanted easy access from the UK and to be close to different skiing and hiking areas. The Chamonix Valley offered both, and you've got Italy and Switzerland on the doorstep too. This little chalet was the first and only place I looked at - I fell in love with it, bought it and that was that! Four years and a lot of hard work down the line I know it was the right decision. Throughout my renovations to the chalet I've tried to retain its character and charm but updated the kitchen, bathroom and furnishings to make them more practical. I love the house, the garden and the views and I always feel happy there. I also like the Chamonix Valley - it's cosmopolitan and buzzing, yet very French and Savoyard.
What makes this chalet unique
It's the open sunny aspect and the great views in all directions, especially looking up at Mt Blanc. In summer I get so much pleasure from sitting in the hammock on the veranda at sunset watching the peaks glow gold, orange, red and finally pink. In winter I love the early morning stroll past the pine trees to the bakery, my feet kicking up the fluffy powder of last night's snowfall.
